Sevco & Sellick colt teams maybe added to league 2

Recommended Posts

The fact so many Old Firm fans seem totally unaware of the crowd figures for their colts in the Challenge Cup (Bob in particular seems to be under the impression they've only ever played Dumbarton in it, over their three fixtures in it, they average about 300), and totally unaware that no TV company has ever had an interest in televising these Cup games, should really highlight how nonsensical all his points are.

Their mindset isn't based on facts, it's based on "but we're Rangers and Celtic and we're massive", despite overwhelming evidence most folk don't give a f**k.

Off topic, but watching. Rangers fan talk down to a long term Saints fan about lower league football is astonishing. Most of our support base regularly went to games when we sat bottom of the Third Division and on the brink of extinction, and have supported the club through thirty hard years to reach where we are, no idea how that gives someone "no idea about the lower leagues", while four years of spending eight times as much as anyone else gives you any appreciation of that level.

Seem to recall Livingston scoring five or six into Celtic youths on the telly. Funnily enough that was probably the last one shown live. We can’t have that being broadcasted every week, can we?

Absolutely nothing wrong with Swello’s suggestion. Possibly a better way of putting it would be that no other club in Scottish football really has the capability to stockpile players in the case that they might need them. Celtic have the resources to do that and Rangers used to, but nobody else does.

Correct. This is a problem throughout world football. Look at the number of players on the books at Man City/Chelsea etc.

I don’t buy into the argument that OF clubs just try and weaken other Scottish clubs by buying up players really. But the bigger clubs definitely do stockpile young talent. No question.

Henry McLeish on Radio Scotland this morning:

"It's crucial that the balance between the SFA and the SPFL is rebalanced so therefore in terms of power, in terms of finance and who does what."

"Project Brave is a classic example. It's changed dramatically over the last 12 months because of the influence of the big clubs. I don't believe that Project Brave now serves the best interests of Scottish football as it moves forward."

If the ‘colts’ results in the Challenge Cup are anything to go by, they would be relegation fodder in League 2. Would the be forced into the lowland league? This is a stupid idea and drowned at birth. Hopefully now that imposter Regan has been fired this idea will follow him down south.

No, under the proposals the 'Colt' sides could not be relegated or promoted.

How that system gives young players a realistic idea of how league football works, I have no idea.

Looking forward to the next Henry McLeish report, which should be available for reading in about 2036.

Tbf Random we were only bottom for a couple of weeks. Some of my best times watching Saints were in the old second division with about 1000 fans. Good battles with Ayr for the title etc.

Templeton is still a wee c**t I'd love to punch.

Templeton, Sludden and some other wee dick were their attacking players. We ragdolled them home and away in front of over 5000 each time, when every other club in the division was averaging a few hundred.  That was a brilliant season.

Ayr Ayr f**k yer Ayr and all that.

The only evidence we have regarding attendances of Colt teams fixtures against league sides are a few fixtures in the Challenge Cup, which all had absolutely risible attendances. Apparently though, as long as they actually kick off at 3pm on a Saturday, the grounds will be bursting

The Challenge Cup games attendances would have been bolstered by the fact that the games were competitive. Meaningless games against League Two sides will, I imagine, be poorly attended.

Greenie for the use of risible in an OF context.

They were also in early season, when the weather is (allegedly) better and folk are keen to get back to watching the football. Can you imagine the crowd at a game between say mid table Berwick and Sevco Colts on a bogging day in February? You'd be lucky to get 3 figures. I'm not even sure that the inevitable Colt OF Derby is worth the bother. Did the two clubs not totally embarrass themselves at a Youth Cup Final at Firhill in recent seasons?

Quick teaser. One of these games had a crowd half the size of the others, spot the odd one..

Rangers Colts v Dumbarton

East Fife v Brora

Banks O Dee v Ayr United

Yes, they made a bit of a mess of Firhill (no smart arse responses please!).

Can anyone think of a good name we can use for the Blue Colt v Green Colt Derby?

"The biggest club fixture in the world - for OF supporting peasants who can't afford a ticket for the proper one".

Bit of a mouthful tbh.

With the brain power and originality of the 'Scottish' media I'd be amazed if they could come up with anything other than the Young Firm.

Regan would have had little say on this, this is a SPFL matter and will be under the consideration of Doncaster and his cohorts.

It's worth adding the Challenge Cup ties - as well as being 'out of the ordinary', not weekly mundane - were on midweeks and international weekends when their first-teams weren't playing.

Despite this crowds were almost all poor:

216 ... Celtic 'B' v Annan
493 ... Rangers 'B' v Stirling Uni
449 ... Cowdenbeath v Celtic 'B'
324 ... Stenhousemuir v Rangers 'B'
1,214 ... Livingston v Celtic 'B'
389 ... Dumbarton v Rangers 'B'
278 ... Annan v Celtic 'B'

Incidentally the Rangers v Stirling Uni tie was delayed 1 week so Rangers youths could play in a friendly tournament.

As noted OF derbies in the Youth Cup have to be played behind closed doors to avoid disorder and TV companies didn't even bother showing any R1 & R2 ties in this season's Challenge Cup.

(They couldn't televise them in SPFL2 anyway unless not on Saturday 3pm).

Separately, as I've seen highlighted in another thread, Brendan Rodgers was defending Scott Brown this week by saying youngsters shouldn't be playing against grown men. Makes sense .
