HibeeJibee Posted January 5, 2018 Share Posted January 5, 2018 Hard to think of less auspicious circumstances but what will apparently be the first ever senior league game in Britain - certainly in Scotland - to be held indoors will be played tomorrow when Heriot-Watt University host Stirling University EOS in their "university derby" East of Scotland League match at the Oriam, Riccarton, 3pm. According to their website construction work to the new grandstand on their outside park has seen the game moved to the adjacent indoor facility (which seats 500). It has held friendlies youth games and most notably last season's EOS Qualifying Cup Final but seemingly this will be the first league game played here or anywhere else. tamthebam Posted January 5, 2018 Share Posted January 5, 2018 Scottish Junior Cup 5th January 2013- a much delayed tie involving Thorniewood United takes place at Ravenscraig Indoor facility. I know the Juniors aren't technically "seniors" but... The wimmen have also played the odd match indoors- e.g. Glasgow City 1 Hibs 2, Scottish Women's Cup Semi-Final at Toryglen. The Thorniewood game was like watching a kick about in a school gym really. I haven't been to the Oriam but I believe it's a bit better. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There were no representatives of the national or world media, AFAICS, but various neutrals and a few groundhopper-types. History was made by Heriot-Watt Uni's goalkeeper who spooned a speculative long-ranger from Stirling Uni EOS's #7 into his own net on 7mins to score the first-ever indoor league goal. HW were sluggish to begin with but improved as HT approached. Stirling looked pretty composed and their left-winger was particularly dangerous. Second half HW were much-improved and won a pen a few mins in, however #9 stunned it back off the post. Increased pressure paid-off when neat play down the middle got the equaliser. It barely lasted though - Stirling went up the other end, chipped the ball over the corner of the box and slammed it in to lead 2-1. At this point several subs came on for both sides. HW pushed for a equaliser and got it with a few mins left. Good work down the right let their man bear down on goal and with composure cut back them buried it. Draw probably deserved. Indoor stadiums are not heated stadiums. Freezing... however Oriam's cafe aka "Bistro Kitchen" was open and there were a number of netball/basketball matches on elsewhere. Travelling back home from family down in Englandshire, I could've broken the train journey at any game en route. Not many others agreed that this was THE game of choice between Leeds and Aberdeenshire ! - my headcount was only 26 at kick-off, rising to 48 at the end. Glad to get on a warm bus afterwards. However at Oriam there are none (made of very high arches: so much so it's suitable for rugby practice games), it'd take some effort.
