Considering the hype from the Arabs I was expecting a Barcelonaesque performance last night. But they were not that impressive. They certainly had the best of the first half but I thought a lot of that was because we sat off them and did not press. We conceded a lot of possession but that being said they only had one shot on target from a penalty. In the second half we were more in their face and started winning individual battles all over the park and ran out worthy winners. I always reckoned this League would go to the wire and last night's game did nothing to change my mind. (Unless we schoosh it of course!)

United were definitely off colour last night, particularly in the second half.

This was down to a number of factors imo.

The loss of Fyvie has clearly had an impact, and we struggled to adapt to the conditions as well as Saints.

We had no one really to bring on when we lost players to injury, and the heads went down when we lost the goal, which was a bit Mackinnon eraesque tbh.

Overall just a bad night at the office, and now wishing it had just kept snowing.......

United have improved massively since Ray got punted, however I can understand based on yesterday's performance, why you Buddies can't see it.

And yes, I agree that for the most part, Arabian arrogance on here (especially mine) is banter.

Aye. And McMullan and Keatings would not get near our team :)

To be fair, Mcmullan has showed great improvement recently, but like most of the rest of the team had an off night last night.

What he was thinking about with the penalty, I have no idea, I think it is possible that he had a bet with Billy King that he could manage to take a worse penalty than his against Livi.

As for Keatings, can't argue with that comment at all. I was really excited when I heard that he had signed for us in the summer, but he has been a major disappointment all season.

All everyone talks about regarding Keatings is that he is the promotion specialist; well unless he pulls his socks up, if we do get promoted this season, he'd better not be up there taking credit for it as he has contributed less than f**k all so far.

5 points off the top when McKinnon got the bullet, compared to now.

No game in hand at that stage, but see your argument.

St Mirren deserved that last night, we were okay in the first half, maybe the slightly better team, but after Flood was injured United lost any shape they had. Also, too many back passes, and while it's fine to retain possession, Paul Quinn isn't the player to rely upon to distribute  the ball profitably.

Csaba and the backroom team must share a huge slice of blame for things going astray in the last half hour (plus).

Finally, well done Buddies for getting the game played. The surface was fine, and contributed to some of the excitement.

This is beginning to feel like a Funster thread where we go from brilliant to shite and back again depending on individual games!

I’d keep every player in our starting lineup (though Quinn as back up only and Scobbie not at RB).

Billy King in particular had an off night last night but has been getting better every week since Ray left.

We were poor last night against a good opposition; let’s not turn that into something that it isn’t.

With respect to the St Mirren fans, how often have they watched us since the last time we played them at Tannadice?  A game where the score line flattered them.  If they want to judge us on last night’s performance alone then they should feel free to do so but it would be a mistake.

Given the performances under McKinnon it’s easy to fall into the trap of overreacting, but I’m delighted with the progress we have made under Ellis and Csaba and think we need to keep level heads.

I was being a bit disingenuous.  Dundee United fans will know far more than me about how much better they are.

I also think St. Mirren are improving. We have an ability to grind out results that we previously didn't have, the return of Davis has made us look a lot more solid at the back, Magennis is getting back to his best, and Morgan is improving every week.

I still expect United to splash a bit of money in the transfer window so they could be a very different proposition in a few weeks, but last night highlighted some real weaknesses in their team.

Duthie is a United fan, I seem to remember him causing ire within the "h*n support" by calling them the "h*n support". Still it's a little unfair to look back at journalists work in hindsight. If only they had the perceptive and prophetic powers that those who use Internet forums have developed.

Went looking for the quote that so annoyed the h*ns, which I didn't - I presume it was taken down amongst a cacophony of seething and petulance - but I did find this...

Tom Duthie Appreciation Image

It's an article from a couple of weeks ago so I'm hardly digging up someone's pre-season predictions and taunting them. To claim the side were on the verge of dominating the Championship when they were barely a couple of points above us is just nonsense - as has been proven by them not being top since the day that article was published and us beaten them last night. By his logic the league is as good as over after last night, which is sadly not the case - even if I did then have a dream were Gavin Reilly scored the title clinching draw in a 2-2 draw against Livingston at Love Street

And big deal if he's wound up Rangers fans. Hardly the most challenging past time in the world.

This....

Whilst we are in the same position as when Ray was punted, (albeit with a game in hand this time round) Csaba's stats speak for themselves, and yesterday was the first time since he came in that we have  not completely dominated the opposition.

We are 5 points behind, not due to our poor performances but through St Mirren going on a great run as well. The difference is that when Ray left, we were in a 6 horse race, now it's a 2 horse race as we have both left the others a good bit behind (for now).

There is no doubt that had McKinnon still been in charge, you would be running away with the league already.

January will be in a vital time, and I would hope that Csaba can get the signings right, as we are scarily short in quality off the bench just now (as can bee seen from last night), and we are not having the best of luck with injuries just now.

Expect a few twists and turns before the end.....

Thanks for your input Biggie.  A United thread wouldn’t be the same without the slavers of the site’s daftest Funster.

Great result for you guys today btw, a full 2 points off the relegation playoff spot now.
