Euro 2020 pairings

Going by this, if we do by some miracle reach Euro 2020 we'll be drawn in the same group as England

Typical that if we get to this tournament we won't even leave the UK

If that bit at the top is right then it seems a bit bizarre to have the groups done already like that and not let the draw happen (or at least wait til seedings are announced for the final tournament). It's not as if the venues are close together in all the cases and UEFA don't care about the fans going to a game so it seems a bit rubbish. As is giving the extra games from Brussels (Eurostadium not being built potentially because a local council doesn't want to get rid of a road between 2 car parks at the existing Heysel and Anderlecht no longer want a part of it) to Wembley when they already have both semis and the final. Probably should have been Cardiff or Stockholm or something since it's meant to allow the wee nations a chance to host as well as being to celebrate the anniversary of the first tournament (or whatever bullshit reason they used when they announced it).

What a joke from UEFA.

Italy, Germany, England, Spain and Holland all guaranteed not to play each other in the group stages (provided they qualify - which the definitely will when you look at how many 2nd chances the national league system will give the big teams).

Hard luck to the likes of Portugal, France, Belgium, Swiss and Poland who have all accrued good world rankings but will still get a tough group regardless.Group seeding should principally be on ranking not who UEFA and their commercial partners want to progress to later stages.

Some of the geographic combinations are bizarre.

Would you not have paired up Amsterdam & Brussels (being the hosts before London got 'awarded' their games); Dublin & Glasgow; Munich & Copenhagen; Budapest & Bucharest; Rome & Bilbao; St Petersburg & Baku?!

So basically if we qualify for Euro 2020 we're bound to end-up in the same group as England, and would play them at Wembley and 2 others at Hampden. I suppose we'd be happy just to have qualified for the first time in 22yrs but it'd still be a bit of a downer.

Presumably there'd be a good chance of finishing 2nd/3rd in group, qualifying to knockouts but not being the Hampden tie?

It was based on geography and "sporting strength" apparently.

I'd just be happy if we got there tbh. Hampden/Glasgow would be rocking for a Scotland major tournament game and a trip down to Wembley would be a laugh.

It’s no different to usual seeding. It’s to avoid having one group with Spain and Germany and another with Scotland and Ireland, for example.

Would have been easily avoided if they hadn't added in the new "qualified hosts will have at least 2 home games" bit though. Can't imagine the nations who aren't hosting will be too happy about that either btw.

I vaguely remember them saying that Cardiff might not get games due to lack of available hotel space. Seems odd that there were still allowed to host the Champions League Final though if that's the problem.

Shame, I quite fancied the idea of adding a new ground, have been to Hampden and Wembley already. Will probably still try to get tickets if I'm still alive.

Scotland and England would be in the same group ... but if one of them doesn`t qualify, the other will still have to play a group game in the paired stadium .... most likely, an England game at Hampden.   Also Scotland and England might  leave the UK ...  15 games minimum in the British Isles is certainly good for fans here ....  pressure not to have a q-final in London, Glasgow or Dublin, since there are 4 other groups and nine other venues. It was a brave idea and one hopes it works to provide new platforms .. and a better deal for the smaller nations.

If Scotland qualify, it'll be interesting to see which two games get played at home for England.  Would they prefer having the two other games at Wembley with the knowledge they've got to come to Hampden or would they rather play us in lovely, leafy Wembers?

If Scotland don't qualify, I could see them just giving England 3 "home" games - is it really worth the bother of sending what would be a huge support up to here with the potential for BANTZ that'll exist?  Not really fair to the other sides having to play them at Wembley no matter what, but it's not worth the trouble.
