Monarchy debate/discussion

The monarchy is an undemocratic and outdated political institution. The idea that, in the 21st century, someone can only become Head Of State if they happen to be born into the royal family is very silly. It is wrong that people cannot become Head Of State on merit and in a democratic fashion.

Do YOU think it's time to axe the monarchy?

Is there any reason at all why it shouldn't be dispensed with?

The monarchy is only half the problem, an unelected upper house that contains representatives of the various brands of sky fairy with their own agenda is hardly the cornerstone of democracy.  Its a fecked up archaic system and I've not heard a single valid argument to keep it.

In the foreseeable future we will have an independent Scotland and will lose the monarchy by default.

Win/win.

England will never ditch the monarchy and are welcome to them.

That wasn't what was on offer, I might have been tempted to vote YES if losing the monarchy was part of the deal.
