If clubs want friendlies what’s the problem? It’s never been a problem before. They are doing the supporters out of getting a bit of football in over the festive period. Burnie_man Posted November 20, 2017 Share Posted November 20, 2017 In the East, they changed their minds last week and invited clubs to request games on 23rd and 30th, but only gave clubs a few days to decide, the window has now closed so no surprise if only a handful applied in that timescale. No friendlies to be played on those days but outwith those days is fine, so expect quite a few friendlies in between Xmas and NY for those that have lights. If there was a logical reason for this ban on friendlies then im happy to accept it if there isnt then it shows them up for what they are imo, inept at promoting junior football in a forward thinking light to all concerend, the clubs, the paying public (ie customers), the wider people of Scotland looking into Junior football and finding various baffling decisions. Why put blocks on customers wanting to watch fairly competitiive football on the 2 Saturdays during festive break, why put blocks on clubs wanting free competitive games on the run up to their season starting again in January, it now means night frienldy matches being cast which is an inconvience to clubs, players and punters who could be asked to travel if they want to watch their team in all weathers at night. Saturdays are for football. All the clubs that play in our tournament are invited with no cost, we pay for the pitch hire and all referess for the 4 games, it lets them get 2 competitive games at no cost to them, we even provide the referess from the SFA. We cant play Lowland League teams as they have fixtures, we are currently in a 13 team league which logically has a winter shutdown which we are totally fine about. They however let teams play friendlies on Saturdays!! just like the ESJFA did up until this season. We have had these tournaments for the past 3 years with junior clubs so we arent desperate for "better calibre opposition" as you put it. We are getting on just fine, by moving it has been the best decision we have made in our 42 year existence, The running, help and forward thinking the East Of Scotland and Lowland League association give their clubs is day and night to what we were used to. Iv said it before the great Junior clubs make the Junior grade with little support from above imo, the EOS and LL association lead and support from the front and have all their clubs on board behind them. 1 example of this was only yesterday when Tynecastle FC secured a Scottish Cup place for next season by winning the Alex Jack Cup that was open to EOS & SOS clubs who werent participating in this years tournament, us and Lothian THV. A Kelty v LTHV match at that time would surely draw in a very decent crowd. I find it baffling when the powers that be decide to shut down during (potentially) the best time to attract a crowd through the gates, particularly if local games can be scheduled. LTHV have only played 7 league games and three others less than 10, therefore to shut down for 2 Saturdays seems not very clever as far as fixture planning is concerned, particularly if we have a poor winter. I get the winter shutdown from EOS and Juniors as a lot of squads could be depleted due to black Friday on the 22nd, holidays, people visiting etc. Why they cant allow friendles to those who want to keep ticking over or give fringe players some game time on a Saturday is baffling.
