Been wanting to invest in one of these for years as we mostly holiday in highlands & Islands.

Finally took the plunge last month and really enjoying it. First couple of nights away up the Cairngorms.

They are nice but can they be converted to electic motors?

No. The weight alone would rule that out. Think we're donkeys years away from seeing electric campers on the roads up here. Infrastructure alone would make travelling difficult.

Japanese import, but you get em all  over the place.

We are all foreigners in Canada.

One of my mates from work is in the process of getting an Alphard hybrid imported from Japan. Nae cheap I suspect but looks well equipped for touring.

You get loads of Mazda Bongos over here too, them and VW Transporters seem to be the most popular for cheaper conversions. I quite fancy a smaller Nissan conversion but they cost a bomb unless you do the whole thing yourself with an old banger.

Anyone done their own conversion, and if so how easy is it? Still considering buying a campervan but the prices are more than a little prohibitive. Can pick up a T5 or T6 VW van with similar mileage to a camper for less than half the price, considering going down that route but I am absolutely not a fucking handyman of any description.

There are loads of Youtube videos on it. There's a lot work to it including electrics, plumbing etc and I got put off the idea knowing I'd get impatient and do a bodge job of it and it would be a bit shit. Someone who does it for a living is going to be far quicker and won't do what you or I would do and half build the thing before realising you've done it in the wrong order and need to rip it apart and start again. But if you're more patient than me and prepared to work it out properly, learn a few new trades and spend most weekends at it for a couple of years, plus buying tools you might only need for one job, you'll probably save loads if you don't count your hours. There are loads of firms doing it up here, some specialist, others garages doing it as a side line and the prices vary massively. I'd definitely check that out first before starting yourself, unless you're hankering for a very demanding hobby.

Looked at a few firms back home and a couple here who will do the conversion for you. Anything half decent pretty much eats up everything you save on buying the van as opposed to a camper in the first place, so it seems a bit pointless going down that route.

I suppose you could just bung a mattress in the back with a bucket and camping stove! This link might offer a half way route, with pros doing the tricky stuff and you doing what you can yourself. No idea what the cost would be.

Notes on ordering camper van equipment
The installation of most camper van equipment requires technical expertise for the slide rails / seat bench and sleeping roof! Delivery is only made to trained specialist dealers so that installation is carried out in accordance with TÜV regulations.
If you have good technical knowledge, have the sliding rails and the sunroof installed by your specialist dealer - the rest of the installation is done by yourself. The kits developed and tested by Reimo make the camper van installation much easier.
If you have any questions about ordering a kit, send an e-mail to our specialists!
Ordering and delivery via a Reimo specialist dealer or via the Reimo Megastores in Egelsbach and Bochum. Click on the map to find a Reimo fit-out partner in your area, with whom you can discuss handling and installation. Your fit-out partner should have seen your vehicle to ensure that the desired interior fits.

I wouldn't mind a van but the missus wouldn't get into anything less than a Winnebago the side of an aircraft carrier.

And that's her on  the fags? I recommend not pressuring her to stop. Apart from it stopping her getting even bigger, it'll help you get rid of her sooner.

That's where my mate's daughter was conceived*. If it had been a boy they were going to give him Ford as a middle name.

*Not that actual van/mattress. Well, probably not.
