dogmc
Slovenia are basically out of it and they know it. They'll be playing for pride and nothing else. England, meanwhile, are heading for World Cup humiliation. They are absolutely dire for a top seed. Yeah can't remember us playing a poorer pot 1 side. If anything they seem to be getting worse. Kane is carrying them.
John Lambies Doos
It effectively was, though... because if you're saying that "Slovakia will definitely beat Malta so leave anything else of out consideration", it's equally true that Slovenia weren't going to beat us by 2-3 goals more than Slovakia would beat Malta by. Still gave them a target to go for it though. They really have nothing now

Slovenia still need to beat us and hope Slovakia don't beat Malta - in theory 0-0 would've allowed a Slovakia-Slovenia 'goal chase' with both able to win; but Slovakia would've been starting the night +1 ahead and with 4 more goals for, effectively +2, and you'd get very long odds on Slovenia thrashing us whilst Slovakia scraped past Malta. True. But when Kane scored, it meant that there was no possibility of Slovenia beating England, however remote that possibility was anyway in injury time. Had Kane not scored, it was still possible that a goal for Slovenia would have meant everything was in their own hands. We don’t know how the final couple of minutes would have played out if it had still been 0-0. It is almost certain that it would have finished 0-0, but we can’t assume that. As soon as England scored, any possibility Slovenia had of going into the last game knowing a win would be enough was removed. If you were a Slovenia player or fan, you’d still have been hoping for a last minute winner. So, to lose instead would have been gutting.

The Slovenian goalkeeper obviously still clung to hope of a win as the game wound down, which was why he launched the daft rushed throw out that cost them the match. Is the Slovenian keeper still that Oblak guy that plays/played for Atletico? Hopefully he feels sorry for Chris Martin and lets him bunt in another tomorrow night like at Hampden.
