It's quite simple - the EU membership is not a majority vote, each state has a veto over enlargement (national parliamentary ratification of the Treaty) and Spain would veto it without hesitation.

So, obviously the UK would (without hesitation) also veto Catalonia joining the EU? I don't recall Westminster making this announcement. Please provide details.

I do, however, recall Spanish politicians stating that the legal break-up of the UK was a matter for the UK, and they wouldn't oppose Scottish membership of the EU

For example, here's a link to a recent article in the Guardian (that well known SNP mouthpiece)

Guardian Article 2nd April 2017

Selected quotes:

Spain has said it would not veto an attempt by an independent Scotland to join the EU, in a boost to Nicola Sturgeon’s campaign for a second independence referendum... ...Alfonso Dastis, the Spanish foreign minister, made it clear that the government would not block an independent Scotland’s EU hopes... ...Asked directly whether Spain would veto an independent Scotland joining the EU, Dastis said: “No, we wouldn’t.”... ...Madrid is keen not to fuel Catalonia’s desire for independence. “We don’t want it [Scottish independence] to happen,” he said. “But if it happens legally and constitutionally, we would not block it.

The heavily Castillian Ruling PP party is grasping onto anything it can to keep control of its wee spanish empire!!

They are shitting themselves that if Catalonia go's then more will follow, particularly in the north.

The Basque Country in particular has long had a large separatist movement and are the only part of spain to take to arms to get it. The devo max/home rule/full autonomy deal from the spanish government has quietened things down a bit up Bilbao way. But without doubt they are eyeing up proceedings over on the east coast.

Galicia,Navarre and Aragon in the north too are all watching and waiting for what lies next.

The PP/Francoist dictatorship are acting like they did back in the bad old days of the republic, slamming down hard on the Catalans, just like they did to them back in the day along with the Basques,Galicians etc, surpressing their languages and cultures.

Spain simply do's not do democracy and the sore lessons of the past quite clearly have not been learned :thumbsdown

Strange how it's the wealthiest parts of Spain who have well financed independence movements. No word from the Andalucian Liberation Front as yet. You get the same in Italy with the Northern League, all regions closest to the rest of Europe for trade purposes.

Strange indeed and no surprise but a lot of this is buried in the past, the Catalans/Basques etc have simply never forgiven what happened from the mid 30's onwards!!

The bombing of Guernica in the Basque country by the Luftwaffe in support of the fascist Franco was an atrocity on a massive scale and has never been forgotten!!

The supression of local languages and culture has parallels with what has happened on this island.

Never mind how richer they would be if they didn't have to contribute to less fertile and geographically advantaged places for industrial investment. Franco died 40 odd years ago and people all over Spain fought against him and suffered for it. I don't see any suppression of Catalan culture now.

No argument on the financial side of things, undoubtedly the richer countries in the North would be better off if they werent bailing out the South of spain, they put far more into the pot than what they get back.

The franco years are a scar on the very soul of spain and will not be forgotten for a long time.

As for suppression of Catalan culure or anywhere west of it along the Pyrenees to the Bay of Biscay, successive Castillian governments in Madrid have tried every means possible to stifle any sort of individualism. Its only in recent years with greater self control that the Catalan government has had more control of what go's on within its borders.

I would say that denying the Catalan people a vote on their future that a clear majority want is supression.

Supression by a castillian judiciary and government, once again comparisons abound.

Castilian settlement and the expulsion of the moriscos probably took care of the Andalusian Liberation Front tbf.
