Have to disagree with this tbh. You could have said that about any previous country/region who have declared independence. I wouldn't underestimate a movements resolve and it's ability to resolve

They would be in a stronger position for international recognition in the aftermath if the turnout had been well over 50% and ideally if they could have achieved over 50% of the electorate voting Yes.  As things stand talk of UDI in a few days looks like posturing. If they were serious, it would probably already have happened by now.

They can't get a bigger turnout when polling stations are being closed and people are being beaten in the streets.
They are waiting for the final votes to be counted first. Once that's done the declaration will happen as he's said.

They got 90 percent on a 43 per cent turnout. That's not including 700 000 votes stolen. It's reasonable to assume that was 90/10 as well.
UDI is fair game.

Most No voters wouldn't take part in an illegal poll organised by Yes voters. It means nothing.

Tbh. I think we are past that now ie ability to get definitive result is nigh impossible. Really all about UDI declaration now. Will they, won't they; and in meantime will the Madrid government offer concessions.

Can anyone recommend a decent book on Spanish political history? Reading a lot of stuff in a lot of places that I would like to put context to.

Not quite what you asked for but

I can recommend Misha Glennie's 3 part Radio documentary series "The invention of spain" as a good primer
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01nk276

And also Ernest Hemmingway's  classic war novel "For whom the Bell Tolls"
