Burke off at half time, hardly involved. Are they still pumping the ball up to him hopefully?

Burke needs to have a word with Lee Griffiths about persevering in the lone striker role, even if the service is poor, rather than spitting the dummy half way through the first half.

I don't think Burke has ever played as a striker regularly. He usually plays on the wing for club so it is a hard task, plenty of regular strikers struggle to play up front on their own. Even against the Netherlands it was more of a 4-6-0 than Burke playing as a striker and we used all our midfield to play a high pressing game. Against England we backed off far too much and couldn't get anyone except Burke up the park.

I think the solution is to drop Thomas who hasn't been very effective imo and bring in a proper striker. The midfield and attack would be

----- Cadden - Campbell - Mallan ------

Burke ------------------------------- Morgan

-------------------McBurnie-------------------

Burke would then either look for the ball on the wing or go inside and leave space for Cadden on the outside which is a role more suited to his game.

The TartanTyneArmy was camped in the far corner with handful of other fellow Scots. England controlled the game well. Very poor tactics from Scotland. Burke is the standout player. A winger. They played him up top himself and isloated him, he dropped deeper and deeper throughout the first half to bring himself into the game but it looked like we were playing a 4-5-1-

Problem with youth squads is that mangers and coaches try to play systems. All the players are rigid and look fearful to play the wrong ball. Can't help thinking the national team would be a lot better if told these lads to go out and fight and dig in. Yeah, some weeks you'll get hammered for being too ambitious and caught out. I would rather the youngsters learn from playing a dozen or so high tempo matches which better replicate senior international fixtures than a handful of games playing keep ball, they can do that in training at their clubs any day of the week.

Won 2-0.

Next month's double-header looking pretty vital now... H v Latvia then H v Ukraine, need 6pts tbh.

We'll take 6pts off Andorra in the 2 games after that, leaving the 3 toughest games to finish... Netherlands (A), England (H), Ukraine (A).

Only winners qualify; 4 best runners-up to playoffs.

Hard to see that England won`t win the group. Hopefully 2nd a possibility.

  • 5 weeks later...

1-1, Hardie penalty in injury time. The defender had a wee tug on McKenna's shirt at a corner, bit soft but it is a foul. The ref has been itching to do something like that all game.
