A really good game of football.

As pointed out, I thought the Dons were just technically better but Hibs' strength and drive made them deserved winners.

Both teams can be very proud of themselves, and the future bodes well if last night is anything to go by.

Technically better. I disagree.

See next season the youth cup will be changing to the Under 18's than Under 20's  due to next season having the reserve league and also an Under 18 competition.

Do you mean they're establishing a separate U18s cup (or making SYC U18s but establishing an U20s cup) - or just turning SYC into U18s?

If latter that's very harsh to the lower-league / non-league U20s.

It’s the latter.

This year's competition was drawn today although I can't find the full draw anywhere so far.

Apparently non-SFA members with teams in U20s leagues were allowed to enter - as was the case the last few years - even though the tournament had been reset to U18s age group: leading to a slightly odd situation of some clubs being eligible despite not having an U18s team, some clubs being ineligible despite having an U18s team, and indeed some of the former entering and planning to put a bespoke U18s line-up together.

EDIT: Draw: https://www.scottishfa.co.uk/news/scottish-youth-cup-first-second-round-draws/?rid=2107

Once again we've the strange format which results in 3 clubs being put in a very disparate 'South' section of whom only 1 may reach R3, while 7 clubs get byes right into R3.

FIRST ROUND – NORTH SECTION

  1. Banks O’Dee v Elgin City

 BYES

Turriff United, Fraserburgh, Buckie Thistle, Formartine United, Inverurie Loco Works, Cove Rangers, Deveronvale, Clachnacuddin, Montrose, Lossiemouth, Keith

FIRST ROUND – SOUTH SECTION

  1. Gala Fairydean Rovers v Queen of the South

BYE

Ayr United

FIRST ROUND – CENTRAL SECTION

  1. Kelty Hearts v Partick Thistle

BYES

Alloa Athletic, Preston Athletic, Hill of Beath Hawthorn, Dundee, Queen’s Park, Spartans, Camelon Juniors, Tynecastle, Edinburgh United, Livingston, Haddington Athletic, Airdrieonians, Dundee United, East Kilbride

First Round ties are scheduled to be played on Friday 31 August 2018.

SECOND ROUND

SECOND ROUND – NORTH SECTION

  1. Inverurie Loco Works v Keith
  2. Formartine United v Cove Rangers
  3. Banks O’Dee or Elgin City v Fraserburgh
  4. Buckie Thistle v Turriff United

BYES

Montrose, Lossiemouth, Deveronvale, Clachnacuddein

SECOND ROUND – SOUTH SECTION

  1. Ayr United v Gala Fairydean Rovers or Queen of the South

SECOND ROUND – CENTRAL SECTION

  1. Tynecastle v Airdrieonians
  2. Spartans v Hill of Beath Hawthorn
  3. Kelty Hearts or Partick Thistle v Preston Athletic
  4. Livingston v Queen’s Park
  5. East Kilbride v Alloa Athletic
  6. Edinburgh United v Haddington Athletic

BYES

Dundee United, Camelon Juniors, Dundee

There has been a heavy drop in entry from 59 down to 46.

Given that 18 clubs from the 32 clubs drawn are progressing into R3 - 11 through ties/7 through random byes - it would appear that only 14 of the 16 seeded clubs eligible to join directly at R3 will be participating.

By my calculations there are 25 SPFL, 10 Highland, only 4 Lowland, 6 East of Scotland and 1 Juniors in the cup.

Last season the figures were 35 SPFL, 9 Highland, 8 Lowland, 4 East of Scotland, 2 South of Scotland and 1 Juniors.

I've just looked at that again... There are 32 unseeded clubs and 18 places in R3. On paper a single round of 14 ties & 4 byes.

So why a R1 with 3 ties, eliminating 3 clubs, then 11 ties & 7 byes in R2?

Most obviously: either Banks o'Dee or Elgin and either Kelty or Partick will exit in North R1 and Central R1, and yet in the respective R2s some 4 and 3 clubs get byes to R3.

A major shock tonight as a Partick Thistle side managed to score three goals. Fortunately Kelty Hearts scored five to progress to play Preston in the second round.

It was a good game they were 2-1 down at the break.

Fortuitous they were drawn in unnecessary R1 (and certainly that they hadn't received a bye to R3!).

Great result for Kelty's schoolboys.

BoD v Elgin is Sunday.

They wouldn't get a bye to Rnd 3, that is only given to teams who made the last 16 last year.

It's 7, not 3... Montrose, Lossiemouth, Deveronvale + Clachnacuddin also got random byes straight into R3.

Out of 46 entrants there were 14 entering at R3 by merit of having reached R4 last season. (I haven't looked-up who the missing 2 were but they mustn't have entered). This left 32 clubs, and should have meant 14 ties & 4 byes in a single round. For reasons that don't seem to have been satisfactorily explained there were instead a pair of rounds - with 3 ties in the first and yet then 11 ties & 7 byes in the second. In consequence of this Kelty, plus the winners of Banks o'Dee v Elgin, will have to win another tie to reach R3... whilst Dundee, Dundee Utd, Camelon, Montrose, Lossiemouth, Deveronvale + Clachnacuddin have reached R3 without playing at all.

The two didnt enter.

The reason for two prelim rounds is they do it by geographical area and allocate so many spots per area. Its done to save travelling but its not really very fair. So you have one allocated spot to the South and three teams entered. No idea why they did what they did in Central and had a 1st round tie when it meant 2nd round byes. Makes no sense but as we arent Central I hadnt really paid any attention to it.

That could have explained why R1 existed in South although the question would then have been why 3/32 clubs i.e. 9% were allocated 1/18 slots i.e. 5%. (Of course the allocation of the South section - as in previous years although not last season IIRC when Berwick ended up being places sensibly - continues to baffle somewhat. Gala > Dumfries is a considerable run and Gala > Ayr an epic trek, most probably via central belt, so why not assign them to Central or indeed have East+West).

However it could not have explained why R1 existed in the other sections given they had 13 clubs & 8 slots (North) and 16 clubs & 9 slots (Central). In each case, even if we agree with the slot allocation and that of South, there should have been 5 ties & 3 byes and 7 ties & 2 byes. Did someone at Hampden get confused and create a R1 in each section even though was unnecessary?

As it's the Youth Cup no-one will really care but it is pretty strange that Partick has already been eliminated, and Kelty are only halfway there, while the Dundee clubs and debutants Camelon received free passes.

What an absolute farce of a tournament. SFA killing the competition by making an U18 tournament despite EOS and Lowland being a 20s league and SPFL being Reserves.Basically ruling out numbers of teams unless in CAS or with a young pool of players to choose from.
