As pointed out, I thought the Dons were just technically better but Hibs' strength and drive made them deserved winners. Apparently non-SFA members with teams in U20s leagues were allowed to enter - as was the case the last few years - even though the tournament had been reset to U18s age group: leading to a slightly odd situation of some clubs being eligible despite not having an U18s team, some clubs being ineligible despite having an U18s team, and indeed some of the former entering and planning to put a bespoke U18s line-up together. Given that 18 clubs from the 32 clubs drawn are progressing into R3 - 11 through ties/7 through random byes - it would appear that only 14 of the 16 seeded clubs eligible to join directly at R3 will be participating. By my calculations there are 25 SPFL, 10 Highland, only 4 Lowland, 6 East of Scotland and 1 Juniors in the cup. Last season the figures were 35 SPFL, 9 Highland, 8 Lowland, 4 East of Scotland, 2 South of Scotland and 1 Juniors. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

So why a R1 with 3 ties, eliminating 3 clubs, then 11 ties & 7 byes in R2? Most obviously: either Banks o'Dee or Elgin and either Kelty or Partick will exit in North R1 and Central R1, and yet in the respective R2s some 4 and 3 clubs get byes to R3. This left 32 clubs, and should have meant 14 ties & 4 byes in a single round. For reasons that don't seem to have been satisfactorily explained there were instead a pair of rounds - with 3 ties in the first and yet then 11 ties & 7 byes in the second. In consequence of this Kelty, plus the winners of Banks o'Dee v Elgin, will have to win another tie to reach R3... whilst Dundee, Dundee Utd, Camelon, Montrose, Lossiemouth, Deveronvale + Clachnacuddin have reached R3 without playing at all. The two didnt enter. The reason for two prelim rounds is they do it by geographical area and allocate so many spots per area. Its done to save travelling but its not really very fair. So you have one allocated spot to the South and three teams entered. No idea why they did what they did in Central and had a 1st round tie when it meant 2nd round byes. (Of course the allocation of the South section - as in previous years although not last season IIRC when Berwick ended up being places sensibly - continues to baffle somewhat. Gala > Dumfries is a considerable run and Gala > Ayr an epic trek, most probably via central belt, so why not assign them to Central or indeed have East+West). However it could not have explained why R1 existed in the other sections given they had 13 clubs & 8 slots (North) and 16 clubs & 9 slots (Central). In each case, even if we agree with the slot allocation and that of South, there should have been 5 ties & 3 byes and 7 ties & 2 byes. Did someone at Hampden get confused and create a R1 in each section even though was unnecessary? As it's the Youth Cup no-one will really care but it is pretty strange that Partick has already been eliminated, and Kelty are only halfway there, while the Dundee clubs and debutants Camelon received free passes. SFA killing the competition by making an U18 tournament despite EOS and Lowland being a 20s league and SPFL being Reserves.Basically ruling out numbers of teams unless in CAS or with a young pool of players to choose from. Wasnt much in it for 70 mins but they were quicker and stronger on a horrible night and ran away with it late on. Some really good goals in their five. Queens hit woodwork twice when only one down.
