So, in two matches this season between the sides, 12 goals were scored, 10 to Musselburgh and two to Dunbar; who were a much improved side to the one that started the season. Indeed there were large parts of this match that Dunbar seems to have the upper hand, particularly in the first half. However, it’s goals that count, and the three goals in an eight minute period early on in the match, was Dunbar’s downfall!

Excellent report.

12 goals from 11 different scorers!

Top 2 East Lothian sides go head to head tonight, with Haddington at home to Musselburgh. Haddington were victorious earlier in the season beating Burgh on penalties in the Fife and Lothians cup. More recent Musselburgh beat the Hihis 3-0 in the league. Should be a good match to watch.

Haddington 0 - 2 Musselburgh. This was Musselburgh’s 6th league win in a row, and they are now 4 points away from winning the league, assuming Fauldhouse win their remaining 8 matches.

So, league could be won as early as this Saturday, away to Thornton!

Great season Musselburgh!

Supporters club man of the match award at Haddington was Skip. So for second game in a row I agree with the decision. Really good performance again from Sean,  Was everywhere in midfield yesterday. Lots of good link ups with his team match, quick with the ball and some of his lay offs were a joy to watch. Good team performance as well. Gary Cherrie must have been in with a chance, especially with his second half performance. To think at the start of the season, he had a few starts on the bench. That just wouldn’t happen now.

As in the last match against the two teams, best player for Haddington was Andy Jones, the left winger. Mainly in the first half, involved in most of the forward play, with good running towards the Musselburgh defence and a number of good crosses throughout the match.

Sorry for the late match report!

League match 25 for Musselburgh saw them travel to meet Haddington at Millfield. The first league match in February resulted in a 3-0 win for Musselburgh. Haddington, currently unbeaten at home in the league, which at this time of the season is some feat. Two changes from last week. Sean Murphy and Gary Cherrie return to the starting line-up, replacing Conor Thomson and Ewan Ralton.

Match kicked off at 18:47. Within 2 minutes, Musselburgh were on the attack, with a ball played into the Haddington box and Mathu King stretched for the ball, but just missed and it went out for a by-kick. A minute later and first goal of game. Mathu passed ball to Sean (Skip) Murphy who squared it to Jackie Myles. With shouts for the ball to go to the left back, Jackie just ignored and from 25 yards blasted the ball past the diving Alysandratos and into the corner of the net. 1-0 to Musselburgh.

In the space of two minutes, Mathu was adjudged offside twice. Bob Berry was given the same treatment at the other end of the pitch. His annoyance at this, earned Berry a talking to by the ref.

In 7 minutes, there was a near miss from Musselburgh. Quinn was dispossessed of the ball in his own half. Ball was played out to Jackie who then passed to Skip, who beat two players and from the edge of the box shot and Alysandratos dived and put ball out for a corner. A couple of minutes later, the ball is in the Musselburgh half, and a foul awarded to the home side. Hamill takes the kick from about 30 yards out, but ball goes over bar.

On 11 minutes, there was a cracking move started by Ally Adams. He kicked the ball out to Matty Lynch. Ball played to Mathu who tried to put Stephen MacDonald on goal, but the ball was blocked. Skip collected  ball and played it out again to Mathu on the left wing, who ran to the by-line and passed back to Stephen, who from the middle of the box shot past Alysandratos into the centre of the goals. 2-0 to Musselburgh.

With 18 minutes on the clock Jones moved up the right wing for Haddington and beat a couple of Burgh players, played a 1 – 2 and then shot from the edge of the box, but ball was cleared away. A couple of minutes after, from the Haddington half, a move up the left wing, again by Jones, saw him get to the edge of the box and shot. The ball appeared to be going wide of the right hand post when Quinn made a lunge for the ball. However, he missed and a close call for Musselburgh.

On 31 minutes from a corner to Haddington, a great ball saw the centre forward Moffat hit the ball, but Jed Davie was on the line to head the ball away. Approaching 35 minutes and Musselburgh were awarded a free kick, much to the disbelief of the Haddington bench. The ball got cleared from the defence, but came to Chris Gray whose shot brought out a good save from Alysandratos. In 36 minutes, Musselburgh had 3 attempts at goal in quick success, first by Stephen, then Gary Cherrie, both Were blocked. The 3rd from Bradley Whyte just went out for a by-kick.

In 39 minutes ball was played into the Haddington box, and the keeper seemed in control, but was challenged by Mathu. Alysandratos put ball out for a throw in, but there seemed to be ‘handbags at 10 paces’ between the 2 players and both ere spoken to by the ref. On 42 minutes, ball was played up the Burgh right wing. Stephen passed to Mathu, who was1 on 1 with keeper, who was able to clear the ball away from danger.

No further goal mouth action So the score was Haddington 0 Musselburgh 2.

Second half kicked off at 19:47. On 3 minutes, Musselburgh received  the 1st booking of the match. Musselburgh play a long ball up the park, which Alysandratos comes out to meet. As he kicks the ball away, Mathu comes in and the keeper falls to the ground; springs back up and starts to make a scene. There didn’t appear to be anything in it, but the ref thought otherwise and booked Mathu for his efforts.

Four minutes into half and the captain Inglis went off; replaced by Devlin. On 51 minutes, a poor kick out from the home side keeper, but Haddington managed to get ball back, Devlin played ball into the Burgh box but Chris cleared it for a corner; which nothing came from it.

Then in 52 minutes, ball again was in the Musselburgh half and a shot from 25 yards from Quinn just went over the bar. Three minutes later and Chris claimed the ball in his own half, and moved up the pitch. Ball came to Skip who played a great ball to Mathu, on the right hand side of the box. As he moved around the keeper, he was impeded, for a clear penalty claim. Unbelievably, the ref didn’t award it.

On 60 minutes Musselburgh on the attack. Gary skipped by a couple of players and shot, but Alysandratos saved the shot, and then Hamill makde a great block off the line, Ball was cleared but comes back to Bradley W who ran towards the goals and his attempt was  saved by keeper and  out for a corner. Soon after, Brown was substituted with Cairney coming on.

Bradley nearly got a goal in 66 minutes. Ball played up the right hand side, with Jackie, Skip and Stephen all involved. Stephen then crossed the ball into the box, just missed by Mathu. Bradley then got the ball at left hand side of box, lost it, but then won ball back. Bradley beat a player shoot across the goals just narrowly missing the net.

On 75 minutes, Michael Moffat came on; replacing Bradley. Just after, Musselburgh were awarded a foul when Berry tried to give Matty a hug when he lost ball.  Brad Donaldson played best free kick / pass of the ball of the match. Within his own half, on the right side of pitch, Brad hit long ball across to the other side of the pitch, over a Haddington player and right to the feet of Michael. Great skill!

On 79 minutes, Chris Moffat was booked for a bad lunge on Skip. Chris’s name then went into the book for a high challenge on Moffat. On 85 minutes, Jones had a shot, which just went wide of the post; then Skip had a shot saved by the keeper. With 3 minutes left, Jones crossed the ball into the Burgh box, which Ally cleared. The ball came to Moffat whose shot blasted off the bar. A minute later Ally made the save of the night from a shot from Cunningham.

In final minute, probably all of the supporters thought Musselburgh had scored again. Michael collected the ball on the left hand side of the box. He chipped the ball and in one, there was a huge cheer from the Musselburgh fans as the ball ‘dropped into the back of the net.’ However, it must have been an optical illusion as the ball actual hit the top side of the net!

Final score was 2-0 to Musselburgh. With Fauldhouse losing their match 3-0, Musselburgh are now 4 points away from winning the league.

Supporters club man of the match award once again went to Gary Cherrie. Second time in last 3 matches. Another sound performance for the midfielder. In the first half of the season, there were a number of matches where Gary was either subbed during the match, or came on as sub. Second half of season has been totally different and is now one of the mainstays of the team.

For Thornton, their best player was the number 10, Thomson.

The first surprise of this afternoon was how hard it was to find Thornton’s ground. AA route map showed it as, once you arrive, and drive through the town, the pitch would be on your right hand side, as clear as you like. Having driven further than expected, we asked a local, and he said, back the way you came, and when you see Sands the Butchers, the pitch was behind that. I reckon that I would still be looking for that blasted butchers even now!

However, after a wee bit of in and out the dusty bluebells, we arrived. The second surprise was knowing that from the bowling green side of the pitch, you could just walk up, stand behind the ground, pay hee-haw and watch the match from there, as it resembled a pitch as part of a greater common. However, wishing to assist Thornton with their cash flow, as we should, we walked up the chain link and paid our way in to the ground.

First time I had been in to the home changing room at an away match. A kind committee man allowed me in, so I could get the Thornton players names, in order to write the following report. So if you haven’t fallen asleep with the khak I’ve just written, here goes!

League match 26, saw our second away game in a row, this time at Thornton. The first match, back in September, saw The Burgh win 1-0. From that match, another tight game was anticipated. The starting 11 this afternoon was the same that started on Wednesday night at Haddington.

Match kicked off at 2:30pm. We didn’t have long to wait for the first goal. Thornton’s Thomson beat Brad Donaldson to the ball on the half way line and raced to the Musselburgh box, with Brad in chase. From there Thomson hit a shot past Ally Adams left hand side, and initially there was thought that the ball hit the post. However, it hit the back stanchion of the frame and bounced back onto the pitch. Not the start that Burgh wanted but 1-0 to Thornton.

On 11 minutes, Musselburgh were on the attack. Just on the edge of the box, Coleman brought down Gary Cherrie. Brad took the free-kick and hit a low shot, under the wall, but the keeper, Clark saved. The ball was kicked out for a throw-in to Burgh.

In this early period, Musselburgh were caught offside three times, with Musselburgh fans not happy about any of the decisions. Play was moving from end to end and in 14 minutes, the Thornton centre forward Ireland had a chance to score, but placed the ball wide of the left hand post. Then in 20 minutes, Matty Lynch took a throw in to Gary, who held onto the ball, then back heeled it to Matty,  who ran into the box. He passed the ball, into the centre of area, and ball fell to Bradley Whyte, whose shot went over the bar. Somehow, the ref blew for a corner, but nothing came from it.

In 23 minutes, Brad had the ball up the right wing and passed to Mathu King. His shot was cleared out for a corner. When this was taken, Stephen MacDonald took aim, but the ball went wide of the post. First Sub for Thornton, came in 38 minutes, when Anthony came on for an injured A Drummond. A couple of minutes later Chris Gray was booked for a foul on a Thornton player. When the free kick was taken! Brad got up first, but his back header came off the bar and out for a corner.

Chris Gray received his second yellow of the match, for what appeared to be something he said to the ref. He went off  the pitch and the half time whistle blew shortly thereafter.

In order to shore up the defence, Musselburgh made a half time sub, with Jono McManus coming on for Bradley.

Second half started at 15:28. On 50 minutes, Coleman was spoken to by the ref for a foul on Jackie Myles. Given the booking that Chris had in the first half, it was surprising why Coleman didn’t follow him into the ref’s book. A couple of minutes later and a near miss for the Thornton centre forward. Robertson received the ball and floated it into the box, and headed on by Ireland, but over the bar.

On 55 minutes, Sean Murphy was brought down, on the right hand side of the box. Gary took the free kick, which Jono headed towards the goals, but ball was cleared. A few minutes later and a mistake by Ireland in his own half, gave the ball to Mathu. He raced down the right wing and passed into the goal area to Stephen, who slide tackled the ball passed a defender and Clark, and ball was in the net to make score, Thornton 1 - 1 Musselburgh.

From the kick-off ball is played up the right wing, and Jackie blocked what looked like a thunderous shot at goal. Jackie must be made of steal, as he hardly even flinched. From 63 minutes, Musselburgh were awarded 4 corners in quick succession. From the 3rd one, Gary kicked to ball over to Brad, and his header was cleared off the line by the right back, Robertson. Fourth corner was cleared from danger. Soon after at the other end, Thornton were awarded a corner. When it came over, Ireland got to the ball first but his header saw the ball move away from the goals. On 66 minutes, McNab collected the ball, on the right hand side of pitch. His cross/attempt at goal, went a couple of yards past the post.

On 68 minutes, Thomson had a long range effort which Ally saved. Then McNab crossed the ball into the box which was punched out by Ally. The ball came in again, and Anthony smacked the ball at goal, but Ally was able to punch save the effort. Another attack by Thornton saw McNab again cross the ball to Thomson and he headed the ball down, which was saved on the line by Ally.

Musselburgh’s second sub saw Michael Moffat replace Jacki, with 19 minutes left to play. Four minutes later, Anthony collected the ball on the left hand side of the box and passed to Thomson. His shot came off the bottom of Ally’s left hand post. Ball was then hit low by Ireland and Ally was able to save shot on the line. Certainly Musselburgh got out of jail there! Another Thornton attack, again saw Thomson shoot, but the ball went over the bar.

With seven minutes left. Musselburgh were awarded a free kick, ball came into the box and headed towards Mathu by Stephen. Mathu was just about to shoot, when the Thornton sub, S Drummond, who had come on for Coleman, made a tackle to clear ball away. On 85 minutes, Thornton’s McNab came off, to be replaced by Mackie. Three minutes later and Ally hits a long ball down the left hand side. Mathu was first to the ball, but wasn’t able to connect properly and the ball was way off target.

Into injury time and Crichton was booked for a high challenge on Brad. Final whistle blew soon after, so match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Not the result Musselburgh wanted. Maybe the occasion got to the Musselburgh players. With Fauldhouse winning away at Downfield, the title moves onto next week. Should Fauldhouse lose to Haddington on Wednesday, the title belongs to Musselburgh. A win or a draw, will mean that Musselburgh have another chance to win the league next Saturday, at home to Dalkeith.

Yesterday’s match at Thornton, was Mathu King’s 286 appearance as a Musselburgh player.

Up there as probably the most respected and friendliest guy, and football player that you could meet, Matti, has now played more games for the Burgh than any other player.

Ten years have past since his debut at Olivebank; and hopefully a few more seasons to come for the Musselburgh captain!
