They'd struggle to spot if a player pulled out a machete. i think VAR is absolute fucking horseshit, and couldn't give a shiny shit about decisions being correct as i watch football to be entertained rather than to w**k over the laws of the game being observed correctly, or fair play being properly rewarded in the face of overt cheating or some other snowflakey crap; however, it is happening, so i'd best just suck it up - but.... in order to make it at least passably entertaining, it should NOT be instigated at the behest of the officials or some other impartial entity - it should be used, twice a game at most for each team, same as a "coaches challenge" as in the NFL - I want to see imbecile managers pissing their challenges away on woefully ill-advised appeals where a basic lack of understanding of the laws of the game makes them look fucking stupid, and they have to make their decisions based on the same one-time looks at incidents at full-speed as the officials get to adjudicate on, the sort of decisions for which they currently get crucified by these same managers with the benefit of hindsight; no recourse to advice from observers in the stands or f**k all - just what they see at first hand and what they feel; nowhere to hide if they "throw the flag" having been conned in to appealing for a penalty that wasn't by one of their own diving twat players (this would be hugely amusing); knowing when to risk an appeal would be a genuine skill, and based on an honest appraisal and understanding of proceedings, rather than the whole thing just being just another fucking circus routine to prolong the engagement of twats with limited attention spans so there oh - and f**k chelsea

paul-r-cfc
Players can be booked for making the VAR gesture 'aggressively'. The offence is called 'dissent by word or action' so plenty of flexibility for the referee to act
Salvo Montalbano
Surely the problem with the Willian booking is that refs don't seem to ever want to give penalties when there is a foul but the player stays on his feet? The players almost feel they have to go down to get the award. If referees start actually applying the rules properly then there would be less need to go down under minimal contact. Or for VAR, which is shite. (See also "Grappling at corners")

lanky_ffc
Bizarre article from the Torygraph where they claim that VAR caused 'controversy', 'chaos' and a 'farce', before admitting that the Willian and Morata incidents are subjective calls and the technology can't offer a black and white decision. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/01/18/anger-confusion-var-farce-unfolded-stamford-bridge/ The 'yer Da' types in the media are really struggling to grasp that the technology is only as good as the people using it. Mr. Brightside
So VAR actually did work, the one decision that was in question wasn’t a clear mistake because Willian was already on his way down, and therefore the video ref stayed with the actual referees call, as he is supposed to.
