Sons v Ton

Think its time we stopped mentioning gunning. He clearly does not want to play for us again but we have fans still creaming thenselves about him. He is only interested in who pays the most and that is not us. Time to move on and support the players we have that do want to play for us.

Well given that the discussion was about whether the Morton defence was weaker than at its apogee last season, the omnipotent presence of Gavin Gunning is in fact central to that debate. Not that we needed your permission to do so anyway; thanks for playing though.

It's amusing to see certain, gormless sections of the Morton fanbase complaining about others "creaming themselves" about players who wouldn't have played for the club had they a better option on the table, given that their own 'idle idol' Andy Ritchie had to be compelled to stay at the club against his will due to a relic of a transfer system and a Walter Mitty chairman. If only they had 'moved on' after Ritchie left to support all the jobbers who wanted to play for the Morton jersey.

Looks like forty years of double standards and hypocrisy then.

Apologies to all 'Ton fans having to wade through C&Ps from Sons Sorrow.

It's a fair point but sometimes if you read a post on a subject and respond, it's easy to forget which thread you're on. It might be an age thing tho'!

Lamie may be fit enough to make the squad this weekend as he is back in training, don't see him starting though. Probably line up something like this:

Gaston;

Doyle, Iredale, McManus, Russell;

Forbes, Murdoch, Tidser;

McHugh, Quitongo, Thomson.

I've got a feeling Lamie will make it as there is no actual damage to the tendon. Big fella will play through the pain.

Maybe see McManus going into midfield and dropping Quitongo to the bench in a 4-4-2 formation.

Or Duffy will be bold and stick with 4-3-3 and McManus dropping to the bench for Lamie

Wow. Just, Wow.

On the one hand we have a jobbing footballer who played very well in his 10, count 'em, appearances for the club, then left without a backward glance or second thought. And who is best known in Scottish football for picking up the ball in open play and walking off the field with it.

And on the other hand we have a man who played over 200 games for the club, scored well over 100 goals for us and lit up not only Cappielow but Scottish football for several seasons (as he probably would have done had he moved to another Scottish club during that time, so your point about the then transfer system is completely irrelevant).

And you are, apparently in all seriousness, bringing Ritchie into this debate out of nowhere and attempting to compare the players in some way in order to berate another poster who you think is old enough to have seen Ritchie play.

Even for the Gunning creamer-in-chief, that's one hell of a stretch.

Andy Ritchie didn't want to play for Morton and was compelled to do so for a large period of time due to the club refusing to sanction a transfer under a medieval contract system. Despite these facts, Morton fans have been more than happy to parade him as an idol and club hero for fully forty years. Which makes the current mewling about the 'need to move on' from 'players who don't want to play for the club' or who would leave 'without a second thought' hypocritical nonsense.

That fact makes your shrieking for people to 'move on' and stop discussing the best centre back that the club has had in the last fifteen years null and void. The player in question played for the club just last season and until last week was an immediately available target for the club. He will likely become available again in the future. People will naturally stop talking about Gunning if either a significantly improved Morton defence or his storming career advancement makes the prospect of re-signing him no longer relevant. The bitter contribution of hypocrites like yourself will have no influence over this matter.

Thanks for playing anyway.

Ho hum, another day and another hissyfit from the board's resident wee fanny. You've become a parody of yourself now, vt; worse, you're repetitive and boring.

Like it or not, what you said was a huge stretch, comparing a decent player who has done little in the game so far to a man who had several seasons at the top in Scotland and is still remembered and talked about in the media and by football fans throughout the country. As I said, that would likely have happened wherever he played. Had he been allowed to move on he just might have kept his enthusiasm and whatever motivation he had for a while longer and thus played at a high level for longer, so whatever point you're scrambling to make is hardly relevant.

Will Gunning ever be talked about in such a way thirty years on (apart from by you of course)? Maybe - but I doubt it.

Gunning's gone and he's unlikely to be back. Get over it. And get over yourself while you're at it.

Absolutely nothing he's said is belittling Andy Ritchie. He's simply making the point that it's a double standard to criticise a player for wanting to move to a different club for a higher standard of football or more money when our fanbase have hero-worshipped countless players who have done the same over the years.

That point is only made stronger by your example of how Ritchie's enthusiasm for the game may not have been lost had he been given the opportunity to move on which so many inferior players have had since: comparing Gavin Gunning to him in this manner doesn't mean anyone's putting Gunning on a par with Ritchie in ability, simply pointing out that we can't grudge players the right to move on when they can get a better offer elsewhere.

Would be surprised if Jim swayed from the 433 he has been playing in recent weeks. So 433 with Lamie coming back in and McManus/Iredale dropping to the bench.

No doubt we will go 442 for other away games but doubt he will for this one.

One thing I really hope we don't repeat this season is treating Dumbarton lightly. We did it last season with Duffy treating both away games as an opportunity to rest players -  as if we can afford to do that in any league games - and after getting away with it the first time it cost us three points in the second fixture there. I hope if Lamie is ready he comes back in rather than Duffy deciding not to risk him and stick with McManus in defence as it's 'only' Dumbarton.

And I always say this. Who are we to say money shouldn't be a motivating factor? Why is it any worse than anything else?

It isn't.

And never once did I say it was.And I've no issue with anyone following the money when they can, none at all.

I DID say it's quite a leap for vt to bring Ritchie into this debate out of nowhere to allow him to berate another poster who watched us in the Ritchie era. And it's even more of a stretch to compare Gunning's career at Morton, all ten games of it, to Ritchie's.

Looking forward to this; great to start the season with a home derby.

Unfortunately I'll not be there; got myself double booked with a family thing.

1-0 sons; nade and handling.

Every season :lol: I thought only ICT and Brechin would fall for it though.
