EOS Qualifying League 2017-18

Recommended Posts

This tournament continues to establish itself in the EOS football firmament and enters its 7th edition this coming season...

It has had many formats. In 2011-12 there were 4 groups of 6 (5 matches each) - newcomers Duns not participating - with top 2 in each progressing to League Cup R1. Then there were 5 groups of 5/6 (4/5 matches each) with winners progressing to LC R1 and runners-up plus best third place to LC Preliminary.

In 2013-14 there were 4 groups of 5 playing home-and-away (8 matches) over the course of the whole season - much to htb's delight IIRC - with winners progressing to R1 and runners-up & third place to Preliminary. Then there 5 groups of 3/4 (2/3 matches) with the winners plus 3 best runners-up progressing to R1.

In 2015-16 there were 4 groups of 4 (3 matches) with top 2 progressing to R1. In the season just ended there were 2 groups of 5/6 (4/5 matches) with the winners progressing to SFs and runners-up & third place to R1.

So of this coming season there are 4 groups of 3/4 (2/3 matches) with the top 2 in each progressing to R1:

Thumping win for Heriot-Watt University at Tweedmouth this evening means the Englishmen now need to win at LTHV on Saturday to progress.

HW Uni know a draw at Burntisland will be enough for them to qualify.

Ormiston have been eliminated after taking a hiding in the East Lothian derby tonight.

Coldstream host Preston on Saturday which will decide who wins the section and gets an easier draw in the League Cup. Coldstream need to win, Preston just need to draw.

Can't wait to see how he describes the LTHV score tonight. I think there's gonna be a few mental scorelines this season

LTHV annihilated Burntisland 13-0 and have qualified. Short of more big scorelines they will top the section.

As stated HW know a draw will see them qualify (I'm assuming Tweedmouth aren't going to run up a cricket score at Saughton).

Tweedmouth must win at LTHV and hope Burntisland beat HW.

Burntisland must win at home to HW and hope Tweedmouth don't win at LTHV.

Tynecastle have qualified after winning 5-2 at Stirling University EOS. They can only top the section if Kelty lose at home to Stirling Uni by 1, 2 or 3 goals (or 0-4).

Stirling University EOS would need to win by 3+ goals at Kelty to qualify, and 4+ (except 4-0) would top the section.

Avoiding defeat will win Kelty the section.

Burntisland ... 1pt, -13

Section C

Tynecastle ... 3pts, +1

Stirling Uni EOS ... 0pts, -3

It's unfortunate but a natural result of the pyramid and licensing system which can't really be helped. Higher-quality teams like LTHV are 'trapped' in EOSL due to not having a license and higher-quality teams like Kelty have to work their way through (quite rightly). Meanwhile this is balanced out by some lower-quality at bottom of LL who'd otherwise get relegated. Should work itself out over the next few years?

Last season Burntisland went down 0-6, 0-7, 0-6, 0-7 at home and 10-0 at Eyemouth, 9-0, 9-0 and 6-0 away in league. LTHV also won 11-0 v Tweedmouth, at Old Shielfield.

However 13-0 is a new level... I'll go and have a look at how often double figures has been reached in recent decades but it won't be that many.

The Shippy were pumped 14-0 in the Scottish Cup last year.

Dramatic day.

Burntisland put midweek's obliteration behind them and did the necessary beating HW Uni 2-1. With LTHV thrashing Tweedmouth 10-2 the Fifers qualify.

Leith smashed Eyemouth 7-2 away and qualified. Eyemouth must win at Peebles by 4+ goals next week to nick their place in League Cup. Avoiding defeat tops section for Peebles.

Kelty seem to have made heavy weather v Stirling Uni EOS but 3 goals in the last 15 mins saw them OK.

Coldstream managed to beat Preston 2-1 to top Section D.
