Junior football, what is the future?

Even they (Stonehouse Violet) were a bit of a strange case - they initially folded through lack of locals willing to serve on their committee.

They came back for about 18 months with a new structure sourced from outside the village, but in typical parochial Scottish hick town fashion, the locals resented the fact outsiders were involved and refused to support the team, which was obviously unsustainable. Eventually they folded for a second and final time.

... and now Royal Albert have relocated to Stonehouse but have been playing recent home games at Lesmahagow!

Only because their pitch was wrecked by a tractor collapsing  the main drain which will be fixed when the weather allows. Doesn't seem to be affecting their form in the League though.

Spartans Juniors didn't actually fold - they did a Kelty and moved over to the EoS to replace the first team when the LL started up .

They only lasted a couple of seasons once they did however.

I think Spartans were hedging their bets in case junior leagues got the nod for the, then, impending pyramid.

I’m pretty sure it was you who said at the time that at least half of them would likely return the following season .

And before the Kilsyth maths teacher replies I know that at least half of 6 = 3 or more.

And Falkirk Juniors.......

Every couple of years some self-publicist will pop up in the papers and outline their ambitions for the Thirds' resurrection, but so far it's invariably come to nothing. It's been a full 50 years since they folded and most of their former support are now either very old or very dead - it's difficult to see where new support would come from as the area they formerly drew it from is now demographically very different.

The biggest drawback is that virtually every proposal seems to involve the regeneration of the crumbling ruin that is Cathkin Park - it's almost certainly too far gone now to bring back to code...the council certainly aren't going to sink the amount of cash that would be required to do so in an area already well-served by sports facilities into what effectively is a few people's ego trip.

With the best will in the world, the Greater Glasgow's pretty low on the amateur pecking order...any team going straight from that environment to a semi-professional one would almost certainly find themselves well out of their depth - I imagine any amateur side with ambitions of  progressing further would want to spend a couple of years in one of the higher-rated ammy leagues first.

Possibly, but a formal application about membership of the new Lowland League was made by representatives of a club called Third Lanark, albeit not 'progressed'.

Also on 20th January 2018, the Scottish Sun reported that "Thirds' Legends have reunited for a BBC  Scotland TV Documentary  on the club's demise".

Yes, Cathkin Park is a non starter. However, Third Lanark (Amateur) FC seems to be thriving on the field, and are now ground sharing at Vale of Clyde JFC.  This amateur club also has a successful youth team.

Coincidences  ?

Thank for that Robert James.

On another forum on here it was stated by AN Other that a big statement was going to be made regarding Third Lanark in August 2016. Sadly that came and went and no more was ever heard of it. Then it was Thirds were at Cathkin followed by some story about the Jimmy Johnstone Academy using Cathkin. Now the Thirds have cropped up playing in Tollcross. Nice to hear the Hi Hi are still on the go.

More a series of unconnected events over the space of five years.

I remember there was talk of them applying for the LL...once again as has happened so often in the past it proved merely to be an excuse for some punters to spout their "vision" for Thirds in the papers with zero result.

Had they had a coherent plan, I imagine the LL would have bent over backwards to admit them and have the cachet of a former League club in their numbers. They obviously didn't.

I'll watch the documentary when it comes on - I'd suggest it's more to do with the landmark 50th anniversary of their demise - and probably the fact that of they wait much longer there'll be no-one left to interview that remembers them -  than part of a media strategy heralding their imminent return though.

Yes, the current incarnation is doing well, but as I said earlier at a very low level - all amateur leagues are not created equal, and the GG - which they're not even in the top division of - is definitely not one of the higher-rated ones. If they subsequently join the Central Scottish or Caledonian setups for example and make waves there, they'll be much closer to playing at the standard they need to be to attempt a return to semi-pro football.

An email was recently sent out by BSC proposing a West League within the SFA pyramid. The West would sit at the same level as East and South leagues and give access to the Lowland League.

Does anyone know which teams are or might be interested?

This AND a new thread too!

Someone's a bit too desperate for attention I'd say!
