paranoid android
In terms of 'background' music to work/study to without it being insultingly bland, I found dub to be perfect for this purpose - I bought two albums 'Dubwise & Otherwise' volumes 1 & 2, and they're brilliant for this type of thing - they're not strictly speaking 'instrumental' but they just sit there brooding away in the background without being too much of a distraction. The other thing might be Erik Satie, but the OP's dug might object. Hallogallo was an excellent choice, btw - take a bow, Tongue-Tied Danny
PrestersKTID
If you like guitar work then most songs from Joe Satriani or Paul Gilbert are quality. Range of balads, funk and rock.

Arch Stanton
I once went to a Mogwai gig having previously known nothing about them. After about 3 or 4 songs I asked my mate if the singer was ill or something, little did I know.

Jaggy Snake
Caspian are by far and away my favourite instrumental band and one of the best bands I've seen live. Anything off their album Tertia is the best starting point.
