NHS under attack

Recommended Posts

No, not more election slogans. The NHS in England is currently dealing with a significant cyber attack, with 16 NHS Trusts confirming that they have been infected with RansomWare which encrypts their files and demands $300 worth of bitcoin to release them. There are some reports of this turning up in other organisations, including Telefonica in Spain.

Some hospitals are turning patients away and in some practices patients are being told to avoid non-essential trips to the doctors.

Any P&Bers impacted?

Have any P&Bers launched a cyber attack on a major organisation?

Have any P&Bers got $300 of bitcoin they can lend Jeremy Hunt?

This happened in one of my previous places of work, on a much smaller scale.
Some old duffer opened what he thought was a pdf attachment in an email and it encrypted about 5000 files.

He didn't even give a single f**k about what he did.

I like how their press releases give the impression there's a team of Alan Turings at the NHS who'll have these crooks defeated quick smart.

In reality there will be a load of disparate IT bods trying to collectively cobble together a full set of backup tapes from the boots of their various cars.

Girl in my works other half works in the NHS Scotland IT team/security team and gave two valuable pieces of information:

  1. The "pings" (whatever that means) came from Russia.
  2. Despite the attack he and the most of his team left the office at 5pm as normal leaving some brown nosing chumps behind to help solve the issue.
