Backlash 2017

Recommended Posts

I know what you're thinking, didn't we just have Backlash?. Well yes we did have a Backlash PPV in September, it was the first ever SmackDown Live exclusive PPV. Of course that means it's once again a SmackDown Live exclusive following the 1 hour Pre-Show, 3 hour main card format, live on the WWE Network. This will be the 13th installment of Backlash and it is being held in the Allstate Arena in Chicago. They have a pretty notorious crowd so this should be pretty fun, the 2001 Backlash show was also held in that Arena.

This PPV is heavily featuring new SmackDown Live addition Shinsuke Nakamura as a main attraction for this event as this will showcase his first WWE match.

In case anybody is out the loop and comes here to catch up, just know that I'm not on the wind up and that I've not gone rogue by informing you that Jinder Mahal will be in a main event of a PPV in 2017. Let me explain....
At WrestleMania 33, Randy Orton defeated Bray Wyatt to win his ninth WWE Championship. On the post-WrestleMania SmackDown, Wyatt challenged Orton to a "House of Horrors" rematch, but since Wyatt was moved to the Raw brand as a result of the Superstar Shake-up, it was made a non-title match and scheduled for Raw's pay-per-view Payback.
On the 18th April episode of SmackDown, Jinder Mahal, who had moved over from Raw, defeated Dolph Ziggler, Mojo Rawley, Erick Rowan, Luke Harper, and Sami Zayn, who also moved over from Raw, in a six-pack challenge to become the number one contender for the WWE Championship at Backlash. During the match, Mahal received help from NXT's The Bollywood Boyz who made their SmackDown debut as The Singh Brothers. Randy Orton confronted Jinder after the match and had some choice words for Bray Wyatt too. Yes, this is the same Jinder Mahal that just lost his feud with Mojo Rawley (albeit and Gronk too).

The following week, Orton defeated Rowan in a no disqualification match and was afterwards attacked by Mahal and The Singh Brothers; Mahal subsequently stole the WWE Championship belt.

At Payback on April 30 during Orton's match against Wyatt, Orton easily fought off an attack by The Singh Brothers, but then Mahal attacked him with the title belt, costing Orton his match. On the following SmackDown, as Mahal was having a photo shoot with the WWE Championship, SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon appeared and retrieved the title belt from Mahal and later returned it to Orton.
Both Orton and Jinder were involved in a six man tag team match on the 9th May episode of SmackDown. Jinder managed to pick up the victory for his team by pinning the WWE Champion.

Jinder Mahal defeated AJ Styles in the opening match of the 16th May episode of SmackDown, which you can see down in the AJ/Owens section. Later on in the main event of the evening, WWE Champion Randy Orton defeated Baron Corbin with an RKO. After the match Jinder Mahal came out and told Orton to relish his remaining time with the title, The Singh Brothers then attacked the champ from behind and all 3 men laid into him and stood tall with the WWE Championship to close the show.

At WrestleMania 33, Kevin Owens defeated Chris Jericho to win his first United States Championship. On the post-WrestleMania Raw, Jericho was granted a rematch for the title at Raw's pay-per-view Payback, but the following week, Owens was moved to the SmackDown brand as a result of the Superstar Shake-up. SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan decided that if Jericho won the title at Payback, he would also transfer to SmackDown.

Also on the 11th April episode of SmackDown, AJ Styles defeated Sami Zayn and Baron Corbin, who had confronted Owens upon his arrival to SmackDown, in a triple threat match to earn an opportunity for the United States Championship at Backlash.

Over the next couple of weeks, Styles defeated Corbin in back-to-back matches, while Owens sat at ringside on commentary. After Styles defeated Corbin on the April 25 episode, Owens attacked Styles and Corbin joined in on the attack. Zayn came out for the save and took out Corbin, but was overpowered by Owens.

At Payback on April 30, Jericho defeated Owens to win the United States Championship, thus transferring Jericho to SmackDown. On the following episode of SmackDown, Owens defeated Jericho to regain the title, making him the defending champion against Styles at Backlash. After the match, Owens continued to beat and injure Jericho, taking him out of action for a while.

Both Owens and Styles were involved in a six man tag team match on the 9th May episode of SmackDown, that video will be in the Orton vs Mahal section.

Kevin Owens opened the go home episode of SmackDown with his own version of The Highlight Reel. His guest was to be Jinder Mahal but AJ Styles interrupted instead. Owens created tension between the two of his guests ahead of their match up straight after it. Jinder Mahal got the win thinks to distraction by The Singh Brothers, followed up bu Owens hitting AJ with the US title from behind.

On the 4th April episode of SmackDown, NXT's Shinsuke Nakamura made his main roster debut by interrupting The Miz and Maryse. On the following SmackDown, Nakamura interrupted Dolph Ziggler's in-ring promo. Ziggler attempted to superkick Nakamura, but Nakamura knocked Ziggler down and Ziggler retreated.

On the 25th April episode of SmackDown, Ziggler interrupted Nakamura's in-ring interview by Renee Young. After the two traded barbs, Ziggler kicked Nakamura, who retaliated by delivering an overhead suplex to Ziggler, who rolled out of the ring and retreated. It was then announced that Nakamura would have his SmackDown in-ring debut at Backlash against an unknown opponent.

On the 2nd May episode of SmackDown in a backstage segment, Ziggler criticized Commissioner Shane McMahon and General Manager Daniel Bryan for hyping Nakamura for Backlash, even though he had not had a match on an episode of SmackDown yet. Shane overheard this and booked him for a match against Sin Cara that night which he went on to win.

On the 9th May episode of SmackDown, Dolph Ziggler called out Shinsuke Nakamura. Ziggler had a bone to pick with the crowd as they cheer a man who's never even had a match on SmackDown Live. Nakamura came out and was more than happy to put Ziggler in his place but of course Ziggler backed down and said he wants the match on his terms. He is looking to expose Nakamura at Backlash and the match was subsequently made.

Dolph Ziggler tried to remind everybody what he was capable, whilst also trying to understand the hype behind Shinsuke Nakamura. He claimed to have done his research on his opponent and was eager to show everyone what he'd come across, it cuts to a little segment supposedly featuring everything Nakamura has accomplished and the screen goes black with FOOTAGE NOT FOUND on the screen .

On the 11th April episode of SmackDown, SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos  retained their titles against American Alpha in a very good match.

On the 25th April episode of SmackDown, Breezango won a Beat the Clock challenge to become number one contenders: American Alpha defeated The Colóns, but Breezango defeated The Ascension in a shorter time, thus earning a title opportunity at Backlash. American Alpha set the time of 5:17 to beat, Breezango managed to win their match with 2:36 remaining on the clock.

The following week in a comedic segment known as "The Fashion Files", Breezango as the fashion police said that The Usos had violated many rules and they would be busted at Backlash.

Again on the 9th May episode of SmackDown we had the pleasure of another Fashion Files. This time they were investigating a paint trail left backstage at the O2 Arena. This led to them finding The Ascension looked away in a room. Breezango later defeated The Ascension that night. The Usos came out afterwards and cut a "12 days" promo.

We have episode 3 of The Fashion Files which sees Tyler Breeze going undercover as a janitor. Breeze found several fashion felonies, Corbin, Zayn & The Usos merchandise all being mocked in this segment. Breezango went on to defeat The Colons later on in the show, The Usos came out after the match once again to send a warning to the challengers ahead of Sunday's WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match.

At WrestleMania 33, Naomi won a six-pack challenge to win her second SmackDown Women's Championship, and she subsequently retained the title against former champion Alexa Bliss on the post-WrestleMania SmackDown.

As a result of the Superstar Shake-up, Alexa and Mickie James were moved to the Raw brand, and Charlotte Flair and Tamina, who was a free agent, were moved to the SmackDown brand. The following week, Charlotte demanded a title shot. She was confronted by the champion, and SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon decided that if Charlotte could defeat Naomi in a non-title match, she would be granted a title match the following week, which she did.

Charlotte Flair receiving an immediate title opportunity angered Natalya, Tamina, and Carmella (with James Ellsworth), as they each felt that they should have been the number one contender. The following week, Charlotte and Naomi's title match ended after they were both attacked by Natalya, Tamina, and Carmella.

On the 2nd May episode of SmackDown, Charlotte, now a reluctnat face, was attacked backstage by the three heels, now calling themselves "The Welcoming Committee", who also tried to convince Becky Lynch to join them. Naomi and Charlotte then teamed up, but were defeated by Natalya and Carmella. After the match, The Welcoming Committee teamed up on Charlotte and Naomi. Becky then came out and acted like she was going to join the three, but then attacked them, but got overwhelmed

On the 9th May episode of SmackDown, Becky Lynch faced Natalya. Members from both groups were at ringside and Natalya picked up the victory. Becky Lynch played peacemaker in a backstage segment post-match where she has managed to get herself, Naomi & Charlotte all on the same page as they now have a 6 women's tag team match booked for Backlash against The Welcoming Committee.

On the go home episode of SmackDown, Shane McMahon held a contract signing for the Backlash match. Several had their say, even James Ellsworth who seemed to suggest that all of the opposing team wanted some of the "Big Hog" as Daniel Bryan would call him. Ellsworth got under Naomi's skin, Naomi tried to attack him but Carmella jumped to her man's defense real quick and smashed Naomi's face off the table. Shane McMahon booked Naomi vs Carmella. The official had a lot to do here, he first of all sent Ellsworth to the back. He then sent Tamina and Natalya to the back, they instead decided to start a brawl with Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair. Naomi got distracted by this and Carmella managed to pick up the victory and giving The Welcoming Committee the momentum going into Sunday.

AJ Styles defeated Baron Corbin in back-to-back matches, while Owens sat at ringside on commentary. After Styles defeated Corbin on the April 25 episode, Owens attacked Styles and Corbin joined in on the attack. Zayn came out for the save and took out Corbin, but was overpowered by Owens. Afterwards on Talking Smack, Corbin attacked Zayn and shoved an official. He was subsequently suspended for one week.

Corbin made his return from suspension on the 9th May episode of SmackDown Live. Zayn attacked him from behind and a brawl ensued. Both Zayn and Corbin were involved in a six man tag team match on the night, that video will be in the Orton vs Mahal section.

Sami Zayn had an announcement to make before Baron Corbin faced off against Randy Orton in the SmackDown main event. He announced that he had his request for a match at Backlash against Baron Corbin accepted. Corbin showed up and assaulted Zayn backstage and told him if he shows up on Sunday he's going to put him down permanently.

Former Tag Team Championship contenders and Wyatt Family members Luke Harper and Erick Rowan faced off against each other on the 9th May episode of SmackDown. Erick Rowan won the match. Erick Rowan made quite a spectacular appearance on the 16th May episode of Talking Smack. He came with a bag full of masks that he called his friends. Rowan addressed the Wyatt Family break up situation, he felt upon his return he was really angry to see Luke Harper turn his back on the family. Despite beating Harper the previous week, he didn't feel this was sufficient punishment enough for what he'd done. Therefore he requested to Shane McMahon that he make another Harper vs Rowan to take place at the Backlash PPV on Sunday. Erick Rowan also managed to go back to his roots by creeping the hell out of Renee Young.

On the 2nd May episode of SmackDown, Tye Dillinger faced off against Aiden English who had something to prove after recently returning to singles competition. The perfect 10 picked up the victory in this match. Aiden English was seen post match backstage crying which led to an amusing segment with Chris Jericho. English ended up on the list! As confirmed by Renee Young before the 16th May episode of SmackDown a rematch between Dillinger and English will take place on the Backlash Kickoff Show.

I'll update any other information as it becomes available to me, no sign of an official theme yet.

Reasonable looking show tbh. I'm kinda interested to see how Jinder Mahal looks in this one so I'll watch that for sure. Obviously Owens vs. Styles is stunning on paper, and despite Ziggler being tiresome, him vs. Nakamura should be a lot of fun.

Six woman tag should be non-boring. Which leaves the tag title match which I can't bring myself to give a shit about.

Zayn vs. Corbin would be semi-interesting as well and add to it.

Is it wrong that I don't want to see Breezango wrestle and just watch them do The Fashion Files skits? Not saying they're bad wrestlers because that's obviously not true but the tag team division has no real energy about it right now and these two are in their element with this fashion police gimmick. Could watch them hand out tickets all day.

If any of you want to see Tye Dillinger in action this weekend you can see him on the Kickoff Show match against Aiden English. I'll be finishing this thread off after SmackDown Live, I'll also be rolling out the Extreme Rules thread.

Not really watched anything in a while. Are Breezango over? I remember their fashion police gimmick starting out before anyone was paying it any attention and I thought it was so daft that fans might buy into it eventually.

They're doing something right if they've managed to get themselves a great recurring segment. I think fans want to see more of them and are enjoying the gimmick but they sadly haven't been able to showcase their in ring talent too much as the route they had to this spot has consisted of really quick matches.

Hopefully if they get a solid 10-12 minutes slot vs The Usos it can showcase both teams really well and get a bit of buzz back for the tag team division before New Day make their arrival soon. If they want to throw in another Fashion Files segment that would be very much appreciated too.
