Already threads on next season's Scottish and League cups so this completes the set.

Brora's chairman writes regular pieces on their website. In his latest one - after scathing criticism of the North of Scotland Cup the Final of which they've just reached! - he discusses arrangements for next season's Irn Bru Cup.

http://brorarangers.football/2017/05/08/a-final-awaits/

He says:

* there will be 1 midweek round (this season there were 2) on Wed 16th Aug;
* 'B' teams continue and can now field over-age players;
* confirms 2 Eire clubs added

So the answer to b teams being utterly spanked and nobody watch them is to make the situation worse?

Good one Doncaster you w**k

Absolutely ridiculous. Can't wait to hear them try to spin how this is good for youth development.

I admire Cowdenbeath for the stance that have taken with the competition. They are so much against it that they had decided to get out of the league structure as quick as possible.

I think I speak for everyone when I say I hope all of the B teams get papped out early doors, and preferably in an excruciatingly embarrassing manner.

I'm still slightly embarrassed that we won this minter of a competition.

Total joke letting the premiership teams field overage players, the whole point of the challenge cup is to let lower division teams win a cup so the fans can have a wee day out at a cup final. Top division sides shouldn't even be in the cup. No doubt more and more over age players will get in until they get what they want another Old Firm final.

Not keen on the Irish and Welsh teams being in but I guess it gives lower division teams a wee European adventure and they are hardly world beaters we are letting in.

f**k this shit. Hopefully we can get out of it at the first hurdle and concentrate on proper competitions.

Good luck to the Premiership sides, with all the amazing player development and phree muneez that you'll be receiving  :rolleyes:

Great idea allowing the bigger teams to field over aged players

Wonder how many teams will be involved

Don't forget the boxes of Strathmore Water!!!!

If previous criteria apply to NI and Welsh teams, the invited sides will be Linfield, Crusaders, TNS Llansantffraid, Connah's Quay Nomads, Sligo Rovers and Bray Wanderers.

Seriously, Overage players?  Wasn't the point of allowing U21 teams to allow the U21 players to play against fully developed players in competitive games?

Like everything the seem to do their just copying the EFL who had over age players in the under 23 sides for the Trophy games.

And look how well that went down!

Hopefully Falkirk get a wee trip to Wales out of this; otherwise sack this for a lark.

I love(d) the Challenge Cup, but they're ruining everything. :/

Of course, like here, generally the 'B' teams were badly received by fans and dreadful crowds occurred. There was also an organised 'boycott' campaign.

However unlike here it would seem the EFL clubs might get rid of them, after saying it was only a 1-season experiment. Voting is actually taking place today on continuing for another season then review again; going back to the old format (48 actual clubs straight knockout); or keeping the group format but without the 'B' teams. Oxford, Walsall and Chesterfield have announced they voted to get rid of the B teams, whilst Notts County and Peterborough confirm they voted for another year. Not sure when results are announced or how calculated.

What are the numbers like in the competition (number of teams)?

Do they need B teams for the extra round(s) due to extra teams from Wales/NI/Eire?

I don't really follow you - but it's not "all-in" without byes, thus no need to fill-out some places to make 32 or 64; and if it was they could just invite more Highland and Lowland clubs in.

Last season this was the arrangement:
* R1 ... 8 SPFL2, 4 Highland, 4 Lowland, 12 'B' teams
* R2 ... 8 SPFL1, 2 SPFL2 join
* R3 ... 10 Championship, 2 SPFL1 join
* R4 (Last 16) ... 2 Northern Irish, 2 Welsh join

Oddly enough they could have had entire divisions enter at the same round, if they had invited the 5th place finishers from Highland / Lowland; but for whatever reason they went with staggering 1st & 2nd in SPFL1 and SPFL2.

So clearly fairly drawn-out and fairly arbitrary.

Of course inviting 2 teams from Eire and putting them in at R4 would mean having to push numerous clubs in R3 / R2 back a round, too.

However given what the Brora chairman says about only 1 midweek round and the weekends I wonder if they're making the non-Scottish teams join at what's currently R3 (becoming R2) which would become a Last 32?

Even if so that would leave 8 too many entrants if the 10 Championship clubs continued joining at the same stage: they would have to give 8 clubs or 'B' teams the chop, or put all bar 2 Championship teams in at what's currently R2 (becoming R1).

What an absolute shambles of a competition, hope we field a weakened team again if we face a "colt" team.
