Ayr United - 17-18 rumblings and mumblings

Recommended Posts

How about a wee bit of pragmatism for a change? Scottish football fans have the potential to be the best and the worst. How about as many people as possible turn out, create a healthy atmosphere, and put on a credible show for the few neutrals that might watch. At least not damage our pitiful profile. Wonder how many, families particularly, have been put off by the prospect of trouble, a venomous atmosphere and foul language? Coverage in the media is all about the ticket situation not the game. There are plenty other derbies across the world, in other sports, as big as anything in Scotland with a healthy rivalry and fans can even be trusted to sit together!

Evolve or die.

Best point in this thread

Scottish people in general need to take heed of this...I'd estimate we have the highest proportion of neandethal-esque idiots per capita than any other country in the world...especially when it comes to sport.

There's a few good examples in this thread and the match thread

Aye but if there's good policing but more importantly some good self-policing then there's nothing wrong with a bit of an edge. As long as it doesn't turn violent at any stage.

The 2009 2-2 game is the only game that I've ever 'lost my shit' - so to speak. It was like an outer body experience when Jim jefferies started claiming for a throw that wasn't his. I just lost it - full on fucking screaming at him.

Some folk have that every game. In some ways I envy them. It certainty adds something to the overall product.

As long as everyone gets home safely at the end of the day.

There is a tribal aspect of football that quite simply does not exist in any other sport. Take that away and what are you left with? What bazka6 is suggesting would kill the game.

If polite banter and mixing the fans is what you're looking for, enjoy Millbrae.

Evolve or die.

A football match with a 'Family Friendly Atmosphere' sounds hellish. A big derby game with a 'Family Friendly Atmosphere' sounds like the worst thing on earth.

Hoping for plenty of crunching tackles, abusive songs, red cards, touchline bustups and fan skirmishes tonight.

Evolve or die.

There are also derbies where the away fans get an armed escort to and from the football.

Scottish derbies and football in general here isn't remotely the worst in the world for venom or violence.

Seems to a late large surge of ticket sales, large queues going out the shop door and the shop only opened 20 minutes ago, reckon we could sell up to 500 just today.

I take all your points, I think most of us including myself enjoy the darker side of things that give these occasions the 'edge' especially when I was younger but times have changed and now I have a family I'd be hesitant to take them. We can have these games and football in Scotland can continue to wither and die or promote a more inclusive, family friendly culture and grow the fan base. What do you think a large portion of Ayr fans are doing on a Saturday afternoon that stops them going?

wishful thinking but other countries do this stuff so much better than us, at the end of the day it's supposed to be entertainment, just because some places are 'worse' than here doesn't justify it.

Gotta be honest, I think your perception of this game tonight and others like it in this country is a bit over the top, we'll go to the game, songs will be sung from both sides that are 'edgy' at best, but at the end of the day, we'll all leave the ground and look forward to the next game. I've never met a Killie fan that I haven't got on well with, we work and live side-by-side and there are absolutely no issues.

I'm not sure what you think we're doing wrong that other countries are doing right? If you look into exactly what they chant at derby games in Istanbul, Buenos Aires, Milan etc, you'll realise that 'Won F*** All and Never Will' and 'We Hate Killie, Black B*******' is so minor it doesn't even register on the scale.

I appreciate that you possibly wouldn't want to expose your family to some of the chants that may be heard tonight, but that's what the Family Stand is for. It all just sounds like noise anyway.

Yup, we were at the 3000 mark before it opened today so hopefully make it up to around 3500. Looks like we won't be outnumbered after all!

ETA hopefully we get a final count once sales stop.

Aussie rules Perth derby, 40k sit together, on this weekend incidentally, maybe on BT sport, double that in Melbourne at MCG. All sport very family oriented including football.

Were you at the last one in Kilmarnock with the running battles in the streets after? Seemed like young boys but nonetheless.

You can still hear it all from the 'Family' stand, your not far from the SRE, enclosure etc.

I never mentioned everyone, my best mate is a Killie fan.

I'd probably never have mentioned it if it wasn't for certain invaders on this thread or the chat about them in our end to the extent the Police are taking measures.
