Gunfight at the Saughton Corral

Recommended Posts

History if it devotes a footnote to Tweedmouth 2-2 Leith tonight will record Leith dropped 2pts in the EOSL title race - but history would be wrong, as those of us who saw it will testify.

That was the consequence: but the story was how Tweedmouth led and later deservedly equalised with 2 audacious lobs... how they went down to 9 men only minutes into the 2nd half courtesy the indiscipline of 2 players in 1 incident... how the 9 left, instead of collapsing, showed immense steel and discipline to hold out manfully for 40 minutes... uphill - facing one of the most formidable scorers in non-league football - repelling several dozen attacks in the process... and how in the end only a spectacular 1-on-1 save by Leith's keeper preserved them 1pt, and in doing so kept their title prospects in their own hands. (Having drawn at Saughton in November it's 2 draws from 3 v contenders for Tweedmouth).

What it also means is the LTHV v Leith head-to-head in the last game of the league season a week on Saturday will prove a title decider, a shoot out for the EOSL trophy.

If LTHV take 4pts or 6pts from their remaining games v Eyemouth (H - Sat) and Tweedmouth (A - Wed), they would only need a draw.

If they take 3pts or fewer... assuming that win did not break scoring records... then Leith would only need a draw.

So in one form or another it'll be a shoot out at Saughton.

I read that post in a Winston Churchill voice :P Should be Lothians title, can't see them slipping up now. Great result for Tweedmouth as well

Neither can be promoted though. Micky mouse stuff. How long does it take these 2 teams to pull the finger out. Don't watch out and a load of top junior teams might just overtake their route to the lowland.

I don't think Richard Burton was in ZULU - are you thinking of Stanley Baker?

Richard Burton does (very dramatically) the narration at the start and end - reading out all those who won the Victoria Cross etc.

LTHV are clearly working on things as they've obtained planning permission for catering facilities, toilets, and a small stand. Is a fair point about each year that slips by maybe leaving the door open to new challengers though.

However winning a league isn't just about promotion. There's the title itself at stake, prizemoney, and a place in next season's Scottish Cup. LTHV are reportedly already there - courtesy winning the SE Cup-Winners' Shield at the weekend - but that hasn't been officially confirmed. For Leith this is the only way into the cup.

LTHV thumped Coldstream 5-0 in King Cup SF last night.

So 1 week after the Gunfight the pair will meet again at Ferguson Park, Rosewell... that's a bit like the Wild West... in the curtain-closer King Cup Final.

See the EOSL website has the game listed for a Saturday disappointing its not on a Sunday as usual, may have picked up a few neutrals like myself.

It's normally the Saturday after EOSL finishes?

Last season it was on Sunday 29th May - probably because there were 3 league games the day before since the season got extended - but the season before that it was Saturday 30th May; season before that it was Sunday 18th May (day before was Scottish Cup final); season before that Saturday 1st June; season before that Saturday 26th May; and so on.

I don't think it could be a Sunday nowadays without clashing with something else as it's on Saturday 20th May; next day is Lowland League Cup Final; following Sat is Scottish Cup Final; next day South Challenge Cup Final.

If LTHV hadn't lost v Tynecastle on pens in SFs they'd be facing Leith in LC Final this Sunday, too.

Cheers for that I was at the final last season on the Sunday thought it was the normal. Hopefully get to the 2 other Sunday finals though.

Finished 8-0... If LTHV can avoid defeat at Tweedmouth on Wednesday then avoiding defeat in the Gunfight wins the title. In the perhaps unlikely event they win 0-8 then Leith would need to beat them by 2 clear goals.
