Payback 2017

On Sunday 30th April 2017 we will have the Raw exclusive PPV Payback where we are likely to see the blow off of several long standing programmes. As a result of the 2017 WWE Superstar Shake-up, Payback will also include two matches involving wrestlers from the SmackDown brand. This will be the 5th installment of Payback. We return back to the 1 hour Pre-Show, 3 hour main card format, live on the WWE Network.

After a brief hiatus so that Roman Reigns could put The Undertaker out of his misery at WrestleMania 33, we return to his previous feud with Braun Strowman. On the 10th April Raw during his interview with Michael Cole, Reigns was brutally attacked by Braun. He rolled Reigns, who was strapped onto a stretcher, off a loading dock, and then flipped over the ambulance that Reigns was put in.

The following week, Raw General Manager Kurt Angle scheduled Strowman to face Reigns at Payback. Angle also gave Strowman the night off. Despite this, Strowman began wreaking havoc backstage until Big Show stopped him, resulting in a match between the two in the main event on Raw. The match ended after Strowman superplexed Big Show from the top rope and made the ring implode.

On the 24th April episode of Raw, Braun Strowman faced off against Kalisto in a Dumpster Match. Kalisto was one of the wrestlers that Strowman had beaten down backstage the previous week. Kalisto actually managed to pick up a shock victory here and Strowman then went on to absolutely destroy him for it, locking him in the dumpster and then pushing it off the stage. No sign of Roman this week again due to selling the beating Strowman gave him and also the timing of his brother Rosey's tragic death.

Randy Orton defeated Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 33 to become the new WWE Champion. On the 5th April episode of SmackDown Live, Bray Wyatt challenged Randy Orton to a House of Horrors match, which Orton accepted. Wyatt and the returning Erick Rowan then ambushed Orton. Former Wyatt Family member Luke Harper came out to even the odds and a tag team match was made for later that night.

On the April 10 episode of Raw, Wyatt was moved to the Raw brand as a result of the Superstar Shake-up, but he was still allowed his rematch with Orton, which was confirmed to happen at Payback, which appears to be a non-title match. The next night on SmackDown, Orton faced Rowan. During the match, Wyatt appeared on the TitanTron, after which, Rowan attacked Orton with the steel steps and got disqualified. Wyatt back at his creepy best on the following Raw.

Randy Orton has been just a little bit busy over on SmackDown dealing with his Jinder Mahal problem but that hasn't stopped Bray Wyatt from cutting promos about the House of Horrors match. It's still unclear as to what exactly this match will entail but there seem to be suggestions that it will start in House of Horrors but then end up in the ring so we'll just have to tune in on Sunday to see what "madness" will ensue.

At WrestleMania 33, Kevin Owens defeated Chris Jericho to win the United States Championship. The following night on Raw, Jericho was granted a rematch for the championship at Payback. Jericho and Seth Rollins were then scheduled to face Owens and Samoa Joe on Raw, but the two attacked Jericho backstage, taking him out of the match. Jericho was then replaced by the returning Finn Bálor, who had been out since SummerSlam, and Rollins and Bálor defeated Owens and Joe.
The following week, Owens faced Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose, who moved to the Raw brand as a result of the Superstar Shake-up. Owens lost to Ambrose, and after the match, Jericho appeared and delivered a Codebreaker to Owens.

The next night on SmackDown, Owens was moved to the SmackDown brand. SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan then decided that Jericho would transfer to SmackDown if he defeated Owens at Payback.

This feud hasn't really offered much with them both being on separate brands, they've had a few digs at each other but none of the verbal sparring or physicality that we've grown accustomed to between the two of them.

On the 30th January episode of Raw, Samoa Joe made his main roster debut by attacking Seth Rollins on Triple H's behalf. Joe's attack on Rollins re-injured the same knee that had sidelined Rollins from November 2015 to May 2016, and almost kept Rollins from competing at WrestleMania 33. However, Rollins managed to recover enough to defeat Triple H in a non-sanctioned match at WrestleMania.

On the post-WrestleMania Raw, Rollins teamed up with the returning Finn Bálor and the two defeated Joe and Kevin Owens. The following week during the Superstar Shake-up, unsure of his fate, Rollins talked about what he still wanted to do on Raw, which included settling his score with Joe. New Raw General Manager Kurt Angle declared that Rollins would be staying on Raw, after which, Joe came out and attacked Rollins and the two brawled. A match between the two was scheduled for Payback.

On the 17th April episode of Raw, Seth Rollins was on commentary to watch Samoa Joe defeat Chris Jericho. After the match Joe addressed Rollins and stated that his attack on him was just business and that he was a target set out by Triple H. After what Seth did to Triple H and Stephanie McMahon at WrestleMania 33, Joe says that once Seth gets in the ring with him at Payback that it will no longer business, it'll be PERSONAL.

Rollins and Joe were involved in 6 man tag action on the 24th April episode of Raw, not much to say here as it was used to develop a quick angle between Enzo & Big Cass and Gallows & Anderson to set up a match for them at Payback.

At WrestleMania 33, Bayley retained the Raw Women's Championship against Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, and Nia Jax in a fatal four-way elimination match. On the 10th April episode of Raw, Sasha declared her desire to challenge Bayley for the title. Alexa Bliss, who had lost the SmackDown Women's Championship at WrestleMania 33, then appeared, followed by her former ally Mickie James, and both revealed that they had been moved to Raw as a result of the Superstar Shake-up. Charlotte was moved in the opposite direction to SmackDown.

The following week on Raw it was announced that a fatal-4-way match would take place that night between Alexa Bliss, Mickie James, Sasha Banks & Nia Jax. The winner would take on the WWE Raw Women's Champion Bayley at Payback. Nia Jax hit her Samoan Drop on Sasha Banks, Bliss came back into the ring, pushed Nia out and stole the victory and will now take on Bayley.

The following week, after a verbal confrontation between Bayley and Alexa, Alexa faced Sasha where she got herself intentionally counted out. After the match, Bayley tried to get Alexa back to the ring, but Alexa escaped backstage. Alexa then returned and surprise attacked Bayley.

In one of the major highlights of WrestleMania 33, The Hardy Boyz made their return to WWE and were immediately inserted into the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship match. Thus making it a fatal-4-way Ladder match, they went on to win that match. The following night on Raw, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson invoked their rematch clause but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Later that night a #1 contendership match took place between two teams that featured in the Ladder match at WrestleMania 33. Cesaro and Sheamus defeated Enzo and Big Cass and earned themselves a match against The Hardy Boyz at Payback.

On the 10th April Raw, The Hardy Boyz teamed with Cesaro and Sheamus to defeat Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson and The Shining Stars. The following week Jeff Hardy defeated Cesaro in a really good singles match, both teams shook hands post-match.

On the 24th April episode of Raw, Matt Hardy and Sheamus faced off against each other. Sheamus shoved Jeff on the outside whilst Jeff was checking on his brother. Jeff then hopped up on to the apron to provide distraction, allowing Matt Hardy to pick up the victory with Twist of Fate. Both teams shook hands again after the match, but more reluctantly this time. Think we're going to see the sportsmanship element of this feud disappear shortly.

On the WrestleMania 33 pre-show, Neville defeated Austin Aries to retain the WWE Cruiserweight Championship in one of the more impressive matches on the night. On the 4th April episode of 205 Live, Aries won a fatal four-way number one contender's match against TJ Perkins, Mustafa Ali & Jack Gallagher to earn another match against Neville at Payback

On the 10th April episode of Raw, Austin Aries faced off against TJ Perkins. Perkins turned heel and became "Prince" TJ Perkins and officially alligning himself with the "King of the Cruiserweights", the WWE Cruiserweight Champion Neville.

On the 18th April episode of 205 Live, Austin Aries managed to get his hands on TJ Perkins again and defeated him. Neville came out and attacked him, Aries fought back and had Neville in the Last Chancery until Perkins recovered and used the numbers to their advantage to beat down Aries bad before the match at Payback.

On the 24th April episode of Raw, Jack Gallagher and Austin Aries defeated Neville and TJ Perkins. The following night Neville defeated Jack Gallagher on 205 Live. After the match Aries attacked Neville and got him in Last Chancery on the ramp before referees broke it up. Aries going into Payback with all of the momentum.

On the final Raw before Payback, Rollins, Enzo Amore, and Big Cass were scheduled to face Joe, Luke Gallows, and Karl Anderson, but Gallows and Anderson attacked Enzo, taking him out of the match. Enzo was replaced by Finn Bálor, and the team of Rollins, Cass, and Bálor defeated Joe, Gallows, and Anderson. Gallows and Anderson were then scheduled to face Enzo and Cass on the Payback pre-show. Both teams have faced each other many times now, including two PPV matches. The faced each other at Hell in a Cell and most recently for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship at Fastlane.

All the promo photos for the matches look like shit two-piece boy bands.

Well, apart from the women and the tag teams, they look like a shit electro-pop duo and a larger-but-still-shite boyband respectively.

Excellent as always!

Ideally they'll keep reigns off TV until payback to really sell it - can't see them doing that though.

Is Wyatt orton confirmed? Sure I read somewhere it's not been advertised

It is, but isn't for the title

Rollins and Joe look like the main act at Pressure.

What is this nonsense (from WWE I mean, not you)? Why wouldn't they have it for the title?

I'm assuming it's so Wyatt can go over, but SmackDown can keep a world title.

Yeah, apparently it's not for the title anymore.  Fucking lol.

It should mean that, but they won't have Orton lose.  It's like they went into some kind of fever dream with Wyatt when he won the title, and they've suddenly remembered how they used to treat him.  Orton will win, the match will be pretty shite, and we'll go on from there.

Good luck man, hope you get it.

Can't say I'm excited at all about this on Sunday.  I'm interested to see the absolute dumpster fire that they'll put out for the House of Horrors match, but outside of that nothing is really that interesting.  Owens will beat Jericho, Reigns will likely beat Strowman, and I don't really care about any of the other matches on the card.

House of Horrors to be more or less shit than the first Punjabi Prison and/ or Ambrose Asylum thing between Ambrose and Jericho?

I actually quite liked the Asylum match.  The Punjabi Prison match had potential, but there were about 4 million rules to it which killed the fun a bit.  If we're putting the Asylum match as shite and the Prison match as shiter, I'd imagine this will fall around not quite as shite.  Hopefully they just go balls out with it.  They're clearly having Wyatt get beat again, so he deserves to have something memorable at least.

That's me finished now, didn't really have to add much after a very uneventful Raw. Remember to have a bash at the Prediction League too.

Anyone looking forward to this? I think there's some good wrestling potential here, can't see any part of the show being bad, really depends on what this House of Horrors match will be like.

I want Alexa Bliss to win. This Bayley championship run has been piss poor, her at the top won't work until she breaks her association with Sasha Banks because it's holding her back.

I also want Braun Strowman to win, I have my heart set on him facing Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules for the WWE Universal Championship.

Well played by the SmackDown team for having Jinder and the lads steal Randy's title so that the House of Horrors match couldn't be for the title (not that it was ever going to be). Reckon Wyatt might actually get the win somehow.
