King Cup 2016/17

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me what happened to Peebles Rovers in this years King Cup?

I see them down to play Leith in the 2nd round after receiving a bye in the first:

Tynecastle v Stirling University
Coldstream v Burntisland Shipyard
Leith Athletic v Peebles Rovers
Lothian Thistle HV v Heriot Watt University

But the next I see is Leith through to the semi's without having played the tie - as far as I can tell?

Still trying to get to the bottom of this and seen the following on the Scottish Football fixtures web page (https://scottishfootballfixtures.wordpress.com/2016-17-senior-non-league/king-cup-16-17/)

King Cup 16-17

The King Cup is a long established competition contested by the eleven clubs from the East of Scotland FA who are also members of the East of Scotland League.

Up until recently, Lowland League clubs also took part but this ceased for the 2015-16 competition.

The format is straight knockout.

2016-17 COMPETITION

First Round

  • Heriot Watt University 6-0 Eyemouth United (Mar 18)
  • Leith Athletic 8-0 Ormiston (Mar 18)
  • Tweedmouth Rangers 2-3 Coldstream (Apr 1)

Second Round

  • Tynecastle 5-1 Stirling University Res (Mar 18)
  • Lothian Thistle HV 3-1 Heriot Watt University (Apr 1)
  • Coldstream 6-0 Burntisland Shipyard (Apr 8 )
  • Leith Athletic wo-scr Peebles Rovers

Semi Finals

  • Leith Athletic – Tynecastle (Apr 25)
  • Lothian Thistle HV – Coldstream (May 3)

Final

Why did Peebles scratch or why did Leith get a walk over?

Does anyone know?

Discovered the story here speaking to some people at the Coldstream game on Saturday.

Last season Peebles scratched from the King Cup in the Semi-Final. (Away to LTHV, IIRC). Apparently there was some kind of investigation into the circumstances which led to them being debarred from playing in this season's competition.

Burntisland are members of both FAs.

Thanks HibeeJibee

Which makes me wonder why they were included in the draw in the first place!

I'm sure Eyemouth United, Ormiston or Tweedmouth Rangers would have preferred a bye into the second round rather than being put out in the first?

Dunno. Possibly the process wasn't completed until after the cup was drawn. They scratched on April 30th and if it was drawn at AGM in early June that'd only be a few weeks later.

If you think about it though Leith v Ormiston in R1 effectively became a R2 tie, so no-one "lost out".

Would have been worse if they had been due to play one of the clubs who'd reached a R1 bye.

Leith end season with King Cup - won 4-2 aet earlier - and EOS League Cup.

LTHV end season with EOS League, Alex Jack Cup and South & East of Scotland Cup-Winners' Shield - plus EOS Cup.

Congratulations both.
