The Championship Run In

Recommended Posts

Trying this from my phone on a dodgy wifi connection in DGRI so bear with me!

Results for Saturday 29th April

Ayr United 0 - 4 Hibernian

Dunfermline 3 - 1 Morton

Falkirk 2 - 2 QoS

St Mirren 5 - 0 Raith Rovers

Dundee United 2 - 2 Dumbarton

League Title

Hibs move another two points clear but this was over a fortnight ago.

Promotion Playoffs

Falkirk's failure to beat QoS at home opened the door for second spot to Dundee United but they failed to step through it drawing with Dumbarton themselves. The battle for 2nd will go to the final game. However Morton's loss confirms them in 4th spot.

Relegation

Ayr's loss today combined with St Mirren's win means Ayr are all but down. They trail Raith Rovers by 3 pts and 10 goals with a head to head to come. I dont have access to a goals scored table at the moment so not sure if Ayr need to win by 5 or 6 goals in Kirkcaldy to stay up but either way it will takes a loaves and fishes type miracle!

Relegation Playoff

Big weekend though in theory there are still 4 teams potentially 9th. In practice though Ayr need snookers and Dumbarton's point in Dundee gets them safe barring a ten goal swing relative to Raith.

One point is all St Mirren need at Easter Road because Raith arent going to beat Ayr by 15! If St Mirren do lose away to the Champions though then victory for Raith will keep them up and send the Buddies to the playoff.

Fixtures for Saturday 6th May:

Dumbarton v Falkirk

Hibernian v St Mirren

Morton v Dundee United

QoS v Dunfermline

Raith Rovers v Ayr United

A win gets Falkirk 2nd. Dundee United failing to win amounts to the same thing. A draw is useless to Falkirk. Win or rely on Morton to get something.

A point gets St Mirren safe and sends Raith to the playoff. Wins for Hibs and Raith though put St Mirren in the playoff.

Obviously the long shot 5 goal win could send Ayr to 9th and relegate Raith.

A QoS win gets them 5th. Anything less means Dunfermline get 5th with Queens 6th.

Dumbarton need to match St Mirren's result to get 7th. A point less will leave them 8th.

Oh, and on the League top scorer front, Jason Cummings and Stephen Dobbie go into the final game tied on 19 goals.

Saturday Predictions

Dumbarton 1 - 1 Falkirk

Hibernian 2 - 2 St Mirren

Morton 1 - 2 Dundee United

QoS 1 - 0 Dunfermline

Raith Rovers 4 - 3 Ayr United

Falkirk to bottle it and somehow give up 2nd to a very average Dundee Utd team. St Mirren to be leading 2-1, concede a goal with 10 mins to go to make us sweat but hang on for safety. Raith and Ayr to have a shootout.

The somehow is because we are a very average Falkirk team.

Results for Saturday 6th May

Dumbarton 0 - 1 Falkirk
Hibernian 1 - 1 St Mirren
Morton 1 - 1 Dundee United
QoS 0 - 1 Dunfermline Athletic
Raith Rovers 2 - 1 Ayr United

League Title
Hibs finish as Champions, ultimately 11 points clear.

Promotion Playoffs
Falkirk clinch 2nd with a late Nathan Austin goal to beat Dumbarton. In fact the draw would have done them anyway with Dundee United failing to beat Morton and finishing 3rd. Morton are 4th as they were confirmed last week. Morton will therefore host Dundee United again in their next game before the two sides clash for a third successive time at Tannadice to finally determine which one will face Falkirk over two legs for the right to play the Premiership's 11th placed side.

Relegation
When Raith's keeper was sent off after just 3 minutes Ayr must have thought they may even have a wee chance of getting the five goal win they needed but in the end they couldn't even get a point, losing to a last minute goal. Ayr go down, though perhaps a wee bit unfortunate to do so on 33 points.

Relegation Playoff
There was a point midway through the afternoon when St Mirren were back in the playoff spot but Loy's crucial equaliser at Easter Road dug them out of a hole and actually, Austin's late goal at Dumbarton moved them up a spot to 7th in the end! Instead it's Raith who are the unluckiest of three teams tied on 39 points, their dreadful goal difference costing them safety. They now face Brechin City in the playoffs next week.

Elsewhere, Dunfermline rode their luck a little, getting the breaks of two poor officiating calls before a freak last minute goal clinched 5th spot at Palmerston, though in practice a 0-0 draw would also have got them 5th so the goal was ultimately irrelevant.

Neither Stephen Dobbie nor Jason Cummings could manage a goal in the final week so they tie for league's top scorer on 19 league goals.

Roll on next season................
