Scottish football - last 5 seasons table of success

Recommended Posts

Being international break, I have gone full geek (never go full geek) and compiled a table of the last 5 seasons in Scottish football in terms of 'success'.

It serves no real purpose whatsoever, other than to highlight how brilliantly consistent St Johnstone have been :thumsup2, and has probably been done before.  The amount of points awarded for each achievement is very arbitrary and debatable.  Should possibly be points deducted for seasons outwith the top league, but haven't done that here.

The two things that stand out for me are: how few different clubs have finished top 6 over the 5 seasons, and how pish Celtic have been in Cups relative to their league dominance.

Key:

LEAGUE:

15 pts for Champions, 5 pts for 2nd, 4 pts for 3rd, 3 pts for 4th, 2 pts for 5th, 1 pt for 6th. 0 pts others

SCOTTISH CUP:

12 pts to SC winners, 3 pts to runners-up, 1 pt to losing semi-finalists. Finalists don't get additional points for SF's.

LEAGUE CUP:

11 pts to LC winners, 2 pts to runners-up, 1 pt to losing semi-finalists. Finalists don't get additional points for SF's.

EUROPE:

1 point for qualifying for Europe each season

Inspired by OP I created this masterpiece!

Points totals for all 42 league clubs over the last five years (not including this year so no Edinburgh City) but with points totals for each year given extra precedence depending on the league. Top flight clubs get their points total multiplied by four, championship/1st division by three, then by two and league two/3rd division clubs points total left as is. Then these totals all added together.

If you cba clicking here's how it turnt out:

  1. Celtic
  2. Aberdeen
  3. Motherwell
  4. St. Johnstone
  5. ICT
  6. Hearts
  7. Dundee United
  8. Ross County
  9. Rangers/Sevco*
  10. Hibernian
  11. Partick Thistle
  12. Hamilton Accies
  13. Falkirk
  14. Dundee
  15. Kilmarnock
  16. QotS
  17. St. Mirren
  18. Raith Rovers
  19. Morton
  20. Livingston
  21. Dumbarton
  22. Dunfermline
  23. Cowdenbeath
  24. Brechin City
  25. Ayr United
  26. Forfar
  27. Alloa Athletic
  28. Airdrie
  29. Stranraer
  30. Stenhousemuir
  31. Peterhead
  32. Arbroath
  33. East Fife
  34. Albion Rovers
  35. Annan
  36. Queen's Park
  37. Stirling
  38. Elgin City
  39. Berwick
  40. Clyde
  41. Montrose
  42. East Stirling

*I included Sevco/Rangers as one club. If I never Sevco would drop down to 20th and Rangers (RIP) would be 36th

Quite like the concept but for a scoring system I'd go with something like:

LEAGUE (top flight only): 1st - 12pts

2nd - 11 pts

3rd - 10 pts

...

12th - 1 pt

SCOTTISH CUP:

Winner: 9 pts

Runner-up: 6 pts

Semi-final: 3 pts

SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP:

Winner: 12 pts

Runner-up: 6 pts

EUROPE:

1pt for every competitive win in the Europa League qualifying rounds/group stage/knockout round

2pt for every competitive win in the Champions League qualifying rounds/group stage/knockout round

Celtic are going to end up with a ridiculously high points total, and I'm not sure how fairly to weight each individual trophy so just made it so any silverware won is valued at 12 pts in total. edit: I think I'm weighting wins in Europe quite heavily! Plus there's no reflection in the system for draws or wins over seeded opponents...

Hibs are considerably better than Hearts in the Scottish cup in recent years.... and stats set to look even better (for Hibs) soon

Just 5 points for 2nd in league though, seems a bit harsh.

Yes possibly, i just felt there should be a big gap between points for winning and being runner-up.  But maybe you're right, it's a bit much.

Think Tam was talking about the post above his, where the Thistle fan had the League Cup worth more points than the Scottish.
