Scottish Cup 2017/18

Missing out on the Third Round is by far the biggest downside to being one of the elite clubs in Scottish football; can't see the dream tie of Wick away lingering until the big boy round tbh.

Not seen it confirmed NB.

Going by SPFL stuff R4 is January 20th (after fortnight winter break - presumably R5 is 3 weeks after that again and R6 3 weeks after that)... SF is April 14th... Final is May 19th.

Presumably the opening rounds will be the same as this season.

Highland league fixtures out today, list Scottish cup dates

1st round - September 23rd
2nd round - October 14th
3rd round - November 18th
4th round - 20th January

No mention of preliminary rounds as they are not relevant to the highland league

Its usually the format that comes out in June, confirming qualifiers and which rounds teams will enter. Preliminary round draw will probably not be until mid July

... or not. If that's correct both R3 and R2 have come forward one week v this season.

Does the season not usually finish earlier in wc/euro years so the players get some kind of a break for those involved in the finals?

That's correct and as mentioned elsewhere the Final and Semi-Finals (which always fall between the Premiership split to give more preparation time) are 1 week earlier than this season for that very reason.

R4 hasn't moved though: it's still the first Saturday back after the Premiership winter break, and the same weekend as last season. Basically in domestic and European terms the only "movement" occurs after the international break at the end of March. In odd years there's a free midweek and 1 more weekend before CL Final and June internationals; in even years there is no free midweek and CL Final and release period for WC / Euros comes 1 week earlier, e.g.

2009-10 ... Scottish Cup Final - May 15th // CL Final - May 22nd
2010-11 ... Scottish Cup Final - May 21st // CL Final - May 28th
2011-12 ... Scottish Cup Final - May 19th // CL Final - May 19th (Scottish Cup Final was played same day as CL Final)
2012-13 ... Scottish Cup Final - May 26th // CL Final - May 25th (Scottish Cup Final was played on Sunday)
2013-14 ... Scottish Cup Final - May 17th // CL Final - May 24th (no extra week was granted for WC2014 as extra week after to balance out calendar decline)
2014-15 ... Scottish Cup Final - May 30th // CL Final - Jun 6th
2015-16 ... Scottish Cup Final - May 21st // CL Final - May 28th
2016-17 ... Scottish Cup Final - May 27th // CL Final - Jun 3rd
2017-18 ... Scottish Cup Final - May 19th // CL Final - May 26th

Therefore it's unclear why R2 & R3 would move forward 1 week - given R4 hasn't moved (and there's now a fairly long gap between R3 & R4 anyway due to the winter break), plus of course Premiership clubs don't enter until R4. Something which occurred to me is the R3 was same weekend as the League Cup Final this season: maybe they've gone a week early to avoid competing for coverage.

The North Caledonian league might want to wave a little more frantically at the back of the class, if this is partly a way for non-licensed Senior teams to have a secondary option for Scottish Cup entry.

The SFA should grant entry in the Scottish Cup to the NCL champions each season, in which event Invergordon would be included in this year's draw. Although the NCL is affiliated to the SFA, it appears that there is discrimination against it from the Hampden hierarchy. Is this because its clubs are too far north ? The champions of the EoSL and SoSL are allowed to participate, even if they are not Licensed ! The Amateur Cup Holders (Colony Park this year) are also invited to participate..

Until a couple of seasons ago they only had 6 clubs playing 10 league games and were on the verge of folding entirely. In those circumstances, probably understandable they weren't in a position to argue for a place. Up to 9 clubs now with return of Bunilidh Thistle - if reach double figures?

Newton Stewart's twitter says they've become licensed which came as news to me - I didn't even realise they'd finally built a stand - but well done to them. They're last SFA members to achieve the standard after 1 or 2 seasons living on borrowed time. Logically this will slightly alter the complexion of the Preliminaries:

Preliminary 1 (8 clubs)
Kelty, LTHV, Glenafton, Colville
+ 4 clubs drawn from Prelim 2 entry

Preliminary 2 (12 clubs)
Burntisland, Coldstream, Preston, Newton Stewart, St Cuthbert, Threave, Wigtown, Golspie, Banks o'Dee, Girvan, Linlithgow, Glasgow Uni
- 4 clubs drawn to enter Prelim 1
+ 4 winners of Prelim 1

Rubbish question, anybody know when the prelim 1 round draw is?

Last year was

4th July - format released confirming entrants and dates.

15th July confirmation of draw date and venue

18th July both preliminary rounds drawn

This year there is still no format released but I'd imagine the draw will need to be by the 17th of July to give team's time to prepare

Last year the draw was less than 4 weeks before the PR1 ties, but it was staged at Coldstream Museum whereas usually they just do it low-key... Given they must now know who the clubs are it would be better if they did it ASAP to let clubs and leagues prepare. Unlike all other rounds many clubs don't know when they're coming in due to the "random drawing" of PR2 clubs to start at PR1: their personnel don't know if they'll have a 'domestic' game or if it'll be a vital Scottish Cup tie maybe at the other end of the country.

It also impacts on other competitions - e.g the EOS Qualifying Cup R1 is played on August 12th but the Coldstream-Tweedmouth, Burtisland-Selkirk and Vale-Preston ties could end-up getting skittled out.

EDIT:
