Maribor (& places between Shkoder and Vienna)

Seeing as they've papped out Rangers, Celtic, Hibs and Aberdeen in recent seasons I though a few on here might have tips on how to spend a few days in Maribor. NK Maribor happen to be at home while I'm there so tips on the stadium and pre-match boozers would be most welcome.

I'll also probably be travelling though Podgorica, Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Zagreb, Graz and Vienna, so if anyone knows any quality eateries/bars/hostels or if there's somewhere decent I'm missing completely then I'll sink a half-litre in your honour along the way.

I lived in Sarajevo for three years. Go to the Doctor's House hostel, I know the people that run it and it's really good. There's a Celtic pub (I shit you not) in the city centre, but places like Kriterion and Boris Smoje for coffee are worth hanging out in.

There's a lack of hostel type accommodation in Banja Luka- mid range hotels only. Banja Luka is quite expensive by comparison with other Bosnian cities and to be honest there's not an awful lot to detain you there beyond a day or so.

Plenty of decent hostels in Central Zagreb- try to get somewhere near to Tkalčićeva which is the big pub /club /party street.

Vienna is expensive but a good hostel is Hostel Meiniger on Rembrandtstrasse...http://www.hostelsclub.com/hostel-pl-22710.html affordable, hotel-style quality with a youth hostel atmosphere. Hotels are quite monstrously expensive in Vienna, too, so this is quite a good spot.

Would recommend also Cetinje, Mostar and Rijeka if you have time.

My memory of the place is that the main square was full of wonderful little bars and pubs, and it was hard to spend your money. I was heartily fed and "watered" all afternoon and evening and spent less than £40.

Was over in Maribor for the Hibs game. Spent the entire day in the main square right up to the game. As you say wonderful little bars and pubs.

We stayed in Hotel Orel which is right next to the main square.

Maribor and Slovenia as a whole is beautiful. Would love to go back there in the future.

I took out the equivalent of £40 early that afternoon (thinking it would do for lunch and an afternoon's boozing and, perhaps, dinner), but I spent all afternoon there, right up to the game, and then went to the game via taxi, had a few beers there and went out after the game, got a taxi home and STILL had money left. Granted this was about 15+ years ago, but it was sensational place, and, as you say, very beautiful. One of my all-time favourite away days.

If you're spending any time in Podgorica I would head to Hotel Ambassador for food/drinks, maybe 20 mins walk from the city centre, just past the national football stadium. Not sure when you're going but it was 40 degrees when I was there and a great place to spend a day in the sun. And to be fair, as much as I actually quite like Podgorica, there isn't really anything else to do.

Only other place I've been on your list is Zagreb, where you can't go wrong if you're centrally located. I stayed in Chillout Hostel which was decent enough and bang in the centre.

Even the beer there was decent and barely spent a penny as you say.

We got a police escort from the square to the ground and after the game back to the square too.

Coming back the day after the game one of our group drove from Slovenia then into Austria then up to Munich Airport for the flight home. The scenery around Maribor, Slovenia and Austria on the way back was stunning and beautiful.

My favourite away trip of all time just for how beautiful Maribor and Slovenia was.

Thanks for all the replies, plenty to think about.

I'll be in Podgorica tomorrow: storms forecast so it'll likely be beers in the pub playing cards and the other half stressing about her flights the next day. We've been before so missing out on the sights isn't an issue.

A friend of mine whom I trust when it comes to travel rated The Doctor's House in Sarajevo very highly so I'll definitely check in there. I'll be sure to give those cafes a shot as well.

There are a couple of hostels in Banja Luka now. My main reason for visiting is that it's on the way and I want to see somewhere in Republika Srpska

I'm a big fan of Cetinje, and non-coastal Montenegro in general. Mostar I visited a decade ago, I'm not against another visit but it's a bit too far from my route (time is limited) and I've heard it's become very touristy in the intervening years: getting pestered to pay €40 to jump off a bridge isn't my sort of thing. I passed by Rijeka on a bus once and wished I'd stopped off, not sure I'll ever be back though as coastal Croatia doesn't seem great value for money.
