California as separate nation

Think the behaviour of the students at Berkley was extremely self-indulgent, because although it no doubt gave them a feeling of self-righteousness the end result was wall-to-wall media coverage like this:

and that only serves to swing the US electorate even further towards the populist right rather than back towards sanity.

What Milo Yiannopolis is doing is aimed at getting a portion of his political opponents to reveal normally hidden anti-democratic totalitarian tendencies in terms of being unable to tolerate opposition to their views. The sensible way for the left to deal with him would be to let him speak and ignore him as he thrives on publicity like this and overall to focus on making a positive case for left wing values that doesn't depend on constantly screaming "racist", "homophobe" or "misogynist" at anyone who has the temerity to disagree. The depressing thing is that nobody on the left in the US seems to be willing to raise their head above the parapet and point that out for fear of the backlash they would get.

I went and watched the video of when he came to my town because I was curious. There were about 7 or 8 masked guys who showed up at the room, yelled about fascists for a few minutes, and half halfheartedly pushed against the police for a bit. No other interruptions occurred. It was actually kind of boring without all the chaos. I think he needs the crazies attacking him or he'd be just another guy with a funny one liner or two about feminists and black dicks.

The word from anonymous police sources in Berkeley is that they were ordered to stand down and allow the riots. That picture where they were inside the building is because that's where they were ordered by city and university officials to stay. It's amazing. It might be time for Trump to call out the National Guard like happened in the South during the 50s and 60s if local politicians are going to refuse to protect Civil Rights.

And he planned to out undocumented students at this talk but aye nae danger it's just self indulgence. If he wants to go around universities and target individual students then he should expect to be fought and challenged.

Do they not have to wait for the Nazis to declare war on them first?

Is the point not that the whole situation is a joke ?

Albeit a dark one!

Sometimes it's hard to tell a serious post from a humorous one on here.

(Particularly when myself, yourself and topcat are posting...)

San Francisco Democrats are proposing a law which would remove felony charges for people who are knowingly HIV positive and donate to blood or sperm banks after lying about their status. It would also remove felony charges from HIV people who have unprotected sex without disclosing their condition. Apparently we need to remove stigma from HIV infected people.

Be better if they removed HIV from HIV infected people, imho.

Sperm banks: the only banks left in the world where the customer still comes first.

Well, HIV is stigmatised. Hep B and C can be sexually transmitted and aren't exactly fun and games with their complications. We should be treating it the same as any other medical condition. To be honest, nowadays, you'd be better off long term being HIV positive than having diabetes, since treatment is now so good.

Officials announce proposal that would establish California as separate nation
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/01/27/officials-announce-proposal-that-would-establish-california-as-separate-nation.html
A proposal in California has been submitted to the Secretary of State’s Office on Thursday campaigning for the state to secede from the United States.
The proposed “Calexit” initiative would ask voters to repeal part of the state constitution that declares California an inseparable part of the U.S.
A recent poll suggested that one in three California residents would support a possible secession from the U.S. due to their opposition to President Donald Trump.
No mention has been made of the president in the proposal.
If the proposal qualifies for the ballot and is approved by voters, it could be a step to a future vote on whether the state would break away from the rest of the nation.
Secretary of State Alex Padilla said the group behind the proposal, Yes California Independence Campaign, was cleared to begin attempting to collect nearly 600,000
voter signatures needed to place the plan on the ballot.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the supporters of the proposal have said California does not share the same cultural ideas as the rest of America.
Similar attempts to establish California as a nation, or break it into multiple states, have failed.
The proposed constitutional amendment, titled California Nationhood, would also ask voters to repeal language that states the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law.
If approved, it calls for scheduling a vote in 2019 to ask voters, "Should California become a free, sovereign and independent country?"
"America already hates California, and America votes on emotions," Marcus Evans, vice president of Yes California told to the Los Angeles Times.
"I think we'd have the votes today if we held it."
The campaign must submit the valid voter signatures by July 25 to qualify for the ballot.

Do any of these statements ring a bell?
Perhaps the SNP (or Brexit) will get the blame for encouraging them.

bunkum. The states of the USA were created by the government of the USA in the 1770s onwards and were all made to be so degrees high and so degrees long. Territorial discrepancies meant some states were somewhat awkward in shape [see the excellent How the States got their Shapes]. California has no chance of seceding from the Union.

The British colonies which won independence during the American Revolution created the USA government. The original states are legal entities that predate the USA government by 100 - 150 years. It's a pure accident of history that these 13 colonies, out of all the British colonies in the New World ended up united.  With a few exceptions the USA government did create the other states.

California could hold the vote and I'm not sure there's anything the Federal Government could do about it. Are they going to send in troops to shut down polling places? Organizing elections is a state matter.
