The Greatest Year: 1967 - From the Archives

Business as usual in the league

Most of the top clubs kept winning on Saturday. Celtic and Rangers both won strongly away from home to continue at the top of the table. Stirling Albion won vital points away to struggling Ayr. In the Second Division there was yet another win for Morton while Raith kept their progress going. Albion Rovers-Third Lanark was played in January. Only 3 First Division matches broke in 5-figures attendances; only 2 Second Division games reached 4-figures.

In news the first gas from the new North Sea fields came ashore in Yorkshire this weekend. Queen’s Park Rangers of the English third tier won the Football League Cup.

First Division

Ayr United 0-1 Stirling Albion (2,811)

You really need each other, don't you?

We all need that lot in some form purely for the lolz...Pedro doing the bouncy at Perth yesterday for finishing 3rd a prime example.

Meanwhile in Italy the collapse of Inter's famous cattenacio continues apace. They've now gone 5 games without a win and their draw at home to Fiorentina meant that they still haven't down up the 12th Scudetto that would put them level with Juve and looked to be in the bag last month

Surely they can get the single point they need in Mantua next week but given recent form there's sure to be a few jitters in a team that no longer looks so formidable

I felt the thread wasn't getting enough views/comments to justify updating it, sorry about that.

As we all know Dundee United won the second leg against Juventus but were eliminated on aggregate. Kilmarnock lost 4-2 in Leeds and play 2nd leg of their Fairs Cup SF tomorrow, the same night that Celtic play the European Cup Final v Inter Milan in Lisbon. Rangers face Bayern Munich in the Cup-Winners' Cup Final a week today.

On the representative front - Scotland won 3-2 at Wembley to become "Unofficial World Champions". However they lost 2-0 at Hampden to the Soviet Union a fortnight ago then were booed off the pitch. Scottish League lost 3-0 at home to the Football League. Scotland Juniors lost 1-0 to North Wales and drew 5-5 with the Northern Irish Juniors. Scotland Amateurs - composed almost entirely of QP players - won 2-1 in Northern Ireland then drew 2-2 with England to finish runner-up in the British Amateur Home Championship. There were mixed results for U18 and School.

Celtic won Division One and the Scottish Cup (beating Aberdeen 2-0) for a domestic quadruple. St Mirren and Ayr were relegated; Morton, champion of Division Two, and Raith were promoted. Raith also won the Fife Cup; Airdrie the Lanarkshire Cup; Falkirk the Stirlingshire Cup; the Renfrewshire Cup has been 'held-over', incomplete. Rangers won the Reserve League; Dundee the Second XI Cup; Celtic the Reserve League Cup. Kilsyth Rangers won the Junior Cup; Cambusbarron Rovers the Amateur Cup.

Third Lanark folded.

Celtic will play in European Cup next season; Aberdeen in Cup-Winners' Cup; Rangers (2nd), Hibs (5th) and Dundee (6th) in Fairs Cup. Clyde (3rd) were denied as judged to be from Glasgow.

There are some interesting happenings at the end of the season with the European Amateur Championship, the United Soccer Association, and Scotland's world tour... so I'll keep up with occasional updates.

Scandalous decision.

Always enjoy this kind of thread. There's been some excellent Twitter accounts doing similar things.

It was due to the "one club per city" rule the Fairs Cup was operating at that time, of course.

According to history books Clyde argued they were from Rutherglen as boundary ran through Shawfield. However being members of the Glasgow, not Lanarkshire, FA scuppered it.

Pity we never got the length of the third round of the Scottish Cup, Jimmy Smith's dramatic equaliser at Easter Road, followed by a 3-0 rout in the replay before 44,000 at Pittodrie.

Israel 1-2 Scotland

Tuesday 16th May at the Ramat Gan Stadium, Tel Aviv

attendance: 27,000

Alex Ferguson scored on 84 minutes to win Scotland’s opening match of their world tour. Ian Ure captained the team. Willie Morgan opened the scoring for Scotland on 21 minutes, running onto a corner clearance to drive home from 8 yards, but Spiegel equalised on 40 minutes. Ferguson headed the late winner following a goalmouth scramble.

This was an impressive performance by the Scots against a side regarded as the best in Asia. They had arrived only 15 hours before kick-off. Penman was injured after 30 minutes and replaced by Hood.

Scotland:

Thomson (Burnley)

Callaghan (Dunfermline), Colquhoun (WBA)

Anderson (Hearts), Ure (Arsenal), Fraser (WBA)

Penman (Rangers), Hope (WBA), McCalliog (Sheff Wed), Ferguson (Dunfermline), Morgan (Burnley)

Substitute: Hood (Clyde) for Penman

China P-P Scotland

Sunday 21st May at the International Stadium, Hong Kong

Scotland’s tour match against communist China in Hong Kong was postponed last night after serious rioting led to the declaration of a dusk to dawn curfew in the crown colony. Fighting between leftists and security police broke out a fortnight ago, during a strike at an artificial flower factory, and has since continued intermittently on a widespread basis. It is unclear if Thursday’s game between Scotland and Hong Kong will be able to go ahead.

Doug Fraser was to have captained the team.

Scotland:

Thomson (Burnley)

Callaghan (Dunfermline), Tinney (Bury)

Colquhoun (WBA), Anderson (Hearts), Fraser (WBA)

Morgan (Burnley), Hope (WBA), McCalliog (Sheff Wed), Ferguson (Dunfermline), Hood (Clyde)

Substitutes from: Cruickshank (Hearts), Townsend (Hearts), Harper (Huddersfield)

Hong Kong 1-4 Scotland

Thursday 25th May at the International Stadium, Hong Kong

attendance: 7,000

Scotland’s stop-off in south-east Asia proved not to be wholly wasted as their second game went ahead despite civil unrest. On a damp evening Ken Wills, the only European in their team, gave the hosts the lead on 8 minutes when he intercepted a poor pass-back. Scotland replied with goals from Alex Ferguson on 26 and 32 minutes.

In the second half the Scots took control and in a solo run Harry Hood created him selfa deserved goal on 59 minutes. Willie Callaghan made it four from a close angle with 9 minutes left.

Having completed their Fairs Cup match against Leeds last night, McGrory and McLean of Kilmarnock will fly-out on Saturday to join the squad in Australia. Ure, who fractured his jaw in the tour opener in Israel, has returned home. Penman was also injured in Tel Aviv but will stay with the party, although his ankle will take at least a fortnight to heal.

Scotland:

Thomson (Burnley)

Callaghan (Dunfermline), Tinney (Bury)

Colquhoun (WBA), Anderson (Hearts), Fraser (WBA)

Morgan (Burnley), Hope (WBA), McCalliog (Sheff Wed), Ferguson (Dunfermline), Hood (Clyde)

Substitute: Townsend (St Johnstone) replaced Tinney, Harper (Huddersfield) replaced Hope

U-S-A! U-S-A!

Professional soccer in North America recommences for the first time in over 30 years today, with the first matches in the inaugural United Soccer Association tournament (U-S-A). For this campaign the clubs have contracted-in teams from Europe and South America, but native players will be used from next season.

U-S-A is sanctioned by FIFA and USSFA. However a rogue rival league – the National Professional Soccer League – has also commenced using native players and secured a TV deal on CBS.

Clubs will play each other once – plus a return game against one club – for a total of 12 matches. Ranked in Eastern and Western conferences of six clubs each, the two conference champions will then meet in the U-S-A Final aka the Soccer Bowl.

Three clubs have been recruited from Scotland; three from England; one from each of the Irelands; one from the Netherlands, one from Italy and two from South America. These are the clubs:

Boston Rovers        Shamrock Rovers, Eire          Manning Bowl, Lynn
Chicago Mustangs     Cagliari, Italy                Comiskey Park, Chicago

Cleveland Stokers    Stoke City, England            Cleveland Municipal Stadium

Dallas Tornado       Dundee United, Scotland        Cotton Bowl, Dallas

Detroit Cougars      Glentoran, Northern Ireland    Tiger Stadium, Detroit

Houston Stars        Bangu, Brazil                  Houston Astrodome
LA Wolves            Wolverhampton Wands, England   Los Angeles Coliseum

New York Skyliners   Cerro, Uruguay                 Yankee Stadium, New York
San Francisco GGGs   ADO Den Haag, Netherlands      Kezar Stadium, San Francisco

Toronto City         Hibernian, Scotland            Varsity Stadium Toronto

Vancouver Royals     Sunderland, England            Empire Stadium, Vancouver
Washington Whips     Aberdeen, Scotland             DC Stadium, Washington

Washington Whips made a losing start to the U-S-A season, losing by the odd goal in three at home to Cleveland Stokers. Jim Storrie opened for the Whips, but the Stokers prevailed with efforts from Roy Vernon and Maurice Setters. Whips have little time to lick their wounds as they now head for Toronto, Canada.

I never knew Aberdeen got to final! They lost 6-5 to Wolverhampton.
