hollerman Posted January 23, 2017 Share Posted January 23, 2017 Scottish Junior Cup - Round 4 Saturday 21st January 2017 FAULDHOUSE UNITED 0 MARYHILL 0 Maryhill missed a great opportunity to progress to the fifth round of the Scottish Cup in a match which they dominated from start to finish, but a combination of inspired goalkeeping, rash finishing, and bad luck conspired to deny them. The overnight frost had put most of the day's games in doubt, but by kick off time Parkview looked in good condition as both sides, temporarily freed from the grind of fighting off relegation threats in their respective leagues, set about imposing their authority on the game. Apart from a few forays in the opening minutes from Fauldhouse, during which Gary Fallon squandered a good opening, Maryhill were by far the better team, and most of the opening forty five minutes were played in the home teams' half of the pitch. In the fourteenth minute a surging run down the left wing from Alex Docherty saw his cross headed powerfully towards goal by Jamie Docherty, but veteran keeper Jon Connelly in the home goal managed to push the ball on to the crossbar. A minute later the keeper brought off another fine save from Jamie Docherty, then in the space of a couple of minutes Liam Coogans was the Fauldhouse hero when he cleared two goalbound efforts off the line from Andy Banks and Docherty once again. The onslaught on the home goal continued until the break, with Maryhill forcing an endless succession of corners, and shots from Kieran Furay and Dale Clark bringing out further exceptional saves from Connelly.The home sides' prospects diminished just before half time when Gary Fallon was dismissed for a second booking following a rash, but needless tackle on Lee McLelland. As is often the case, the team playing a man short actually seemed to be able to raise their game. In the second period Fauldhouse put together a few promising attacks, albeit without causing any real problems for Jack Baker in the Maryhill goal, as Maryhill continued to have by far the bulk of the play. Alex Docherty headed narrowly over the bar, Dale Clark beat two defenders before forcing another good save from Connelly, then Jamie Docherty just failed by inches to connect with a cross from sub William Wells, and it was gradually looking as if it just wasn't going to be Hill's day. In a final closing surge they did come particularly close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Lee McLelland's powerfully struck free kick was blocked by Connelly and fell to William Wells whose fierce shot was stopped on the line by Sammy Watson amid strong claims for a penalty, and in the final minute Wells' header beat Connelly but struck the inside of the post and was recovered by the keeper. This was a game that Maryhill should have won convincingly, but they have a second chance next Saturday when the replay takes place at Lochburn Park.
