HibeeJibee
Whenever the Queen dies I'd imagine all sport will be cancelled that day (or the day after if it comes overnight) and on the day of the funeral. In the past rugby, horseracing and so on stopped for the duration while football and rugby league only stopped for the days. There hasn't been a royal state funeral on a Saturday since Queen Victoria... Princess Diana's not being a state funeral officially... but I don't know if that is policy or simply chance. Although a less deferential age we also live in a far less stoic one - I could easily see calls for football to stop being made. Tradition requires Scottish football to make an unseemly and unnecessary spectacle of itself through ham-fistedness. In 1901 when Queen Victoria died (on Tuesday 22nd January) the FA cancelled the FA Cup ties on Saturday 26th and all football on Saturday 2nd February... SFA wrung their hands and even made Queen's Park travel to Hearts after they asked for a postponement and Hearts refused, although it was snowed-off on the morning of the tie. There was also a terrible guddle in 1952, IIRC. Most recently of course the SFA tried to insist on the international against Belarus at Pittodrie going ahead on the day of Princess Diana's funeral in 1997, before eventually changing tack. resk
I see a minimum three days off work on full pay as my divine right. Got a day off for the last big wedding whenever that was. Didn't switch the telly on.

According to the metro there will be 12 days of mourning where she'll be lying in state. If its national mourning then I doubt there'll be any events on during that period
HibeeJibee
Better hope it's not an international window, then. FIFA would have a field day...

Musketeer Gripweed
There won't be 12 days of mourning. In fact most companies will keep going. They can't afford to pay wages without getting a return for their money. Why would they? Nice sentiment, but it will be business as usual for most places. Schools will be shut, apart from that, it will be business as usual I expect.
resk
Now may be a good time to start a campaign aimed at convincing your workmates that you're a massive monarchist. A royal wedding commemorative mug, union fleg tie, GSTQ ringtone, that kind of pish. "Aye he's taking the full 12 days off. It's hit him really hard." RadgerTheBadger
England vs. Germany, hopefully. It would be interesting to see what England would do if she died just before or during a major tournament eh

So no change there then.
tamthebam
I'd love to be interviewed in the street by a TV crew when Brenda pops off: "How do you think the Queen should be remembered?" "As Elizabeth the Last..."
HibeeJibee
I'm thinking the 12 days of mourning maybe just refers to the period between death and funeral. National life wouldn't shut-down entirely for almost a fortnight. If Wikipedia's to be trusted there were only 3 "national days of mourning" for Churchill (first 3 after his death) and 1 for Princess Diana (funeral day). EDIT: Meanwhile, in Yugoslavia... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_and_state_funeral_of_Josip_Broz_Tito#Grief It was a Sunday afternoon, and Yugoslavs were enjoying a weekend. Their usual activities were interrupted when the TV screen went black for 30 seconds. After that, Miodrag Zdravković, newsreader of Radio Television Belgrade, read the following statement live on national television via chroma key: Comrade Tito has died. That was announced tonight by the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia and the Presidency of Yugoslavia to the working class, all the working people and citizens and all the nations and nationalities of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.[8] The same announcement was read out in all republican TV stations. On Sunday afternoon, Yugoslav Television would usually broadcast soccer games of the national league. That night the derby in Split between NK Hajduk Split and FK Red Star was scheduled to be aired live on national television.[8] During the live broadcast, when the match was in the 41st minute, three men entered the Poljud Stadium pitch, signaling the referee to stop the match. Ante Skataretiko, the president of Hajduk, took the microphone and announced Tito's death to everyone in attendance and to viewers at home, nationwide. What followed were sudden scenes of mass crying with even some players such as Zlatko Vujović collapsing down to the ground and weeping. Players of both teams and referees aligned to stand in a moment of silence. Once the stadium announcer said "May he rest in peace", the entire stadium of 50,000 football fans spontaneously started to sing "Comrade Tito we swear to you, from your path we will never depart".[8][9] The match wasn't resumed, and it had to be replayed much later in the month as decided upon.[citation needed] The scenes from the match shocked the Yugoslav people now mourning his demise
