Royal Rumble 2017

Welcome to the 2017 Royal Rumble thread, this will be the 30th event of its kind on Sunday, January 29th 2017.. This year we are in the Alamodome, a lot of seats to fill so they'll need to pull something special out the bag. This will be the 2nd time this event has taken place there and the 4th time the Royal Rumble has been in the state of Texas. The road to WrestleMania is upon us and one of the biggest opportunities of the year has come back around in the form of the Royal Rumble Match.

We all know the recent attempts at this match have not been good at all, whether it be the match itself just being dull or WWE not pulling the trigger on clear favourites therefore sucking the life out of the whole thing. See 2014 for completely leaving out the super hot Daniel Bryan and then not pulling the trigger on dominant heel Roman Reigns (babyface Batista ffs). See also 2015 for eliminating Daniel Bryan early, tad difficult to get everyone back on side after that especially with the disgraceful ending.

In the recent trend of the big 4 PPV's on the WWE Network, we are having another blockbuster 4 hour show, which also means a 2 hour Kickoff Show. Because it's a dual branded PPV that also means we're likely to have our brains fried by about 10 different commentators throughout the night. Expect to hear from Michael Cole, JBL, Mauro Ranallo, Corey Graves, David Otunga, Byron Saxton, Austin Aries & maybe others .

Our main event of the evening will of course be the Royal Rumble match itself. I don't want to have to explain it in any great detail, you wouldn't be in here if you didn't know how it worked! Lets go with the essentials, 30 men (or women.... See Chyna, Beth Pheonix or Kharma from previous years) will participate in this match, an entrant every 90 seconds, opponents must be thrown over the top rope and both feet must touch the floor to be eliminated and the winner will receive a title shot at WrestleMania. The first 2 men to be announced were Goldberg and Brock Lesnar, two Goliaths that will have the rest quaking in their boots.

Royal Rumble matches are also known for returns from either injured or former stars, Rumble debuts and NXT call ups. If we're looking at one each do we reckon Finn Balor Return, James Ellsworth Rumble debut & a Samoa Joe call up? Which would technically be the first time in a Royal Rumble match for all of them. With ever increasing rosters, will there be any room for our new Cruiserweight friends in this match?  A list of confirmed entrants will be compiled further down the thread!! It has now been announced that Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and Corey Graves will be calling the match.

But now it's time for some Royal Rumble stats.

Most Wins: 3 - Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Most Appearances: 19 - Kane. (17 under the Kane guise)

Most Eliminations in a Single Match: 12 - Roman Reigns 2014.

Most Cumulative Eliminations: 44 - Kane. (43 under the Kane guise)

Longest Time Spent in a Single Royal Rumble: 1:02:12 - Rey Mysterio 2006 (Rey Mysterio is the only masked wrestler to win the Royal Rumble and is also the shortest to win)

Most Cumulative Time Spent in Royal Rumbles: 3:59:37 - Triple H.

Quickest Elimination: Kane eliminating Santino Marella in 1.9 seconds.

Luckiest Number: #27 with 4 winners.

Most Appearances in a Single Royal Rumble Match: 3 - Mick Foley appeared in 1998 as Cactus Jack, Mankind & Dude Love :thumsup2.

Most Competitors Necessary for a Single Elimination: 8 - in 2007 it took 8 of the participants to lift Viscera over the top rope to eliminate him. :o

Two men have managed to win from the #1 spot: Shawn Michaels &

Chris Benoit

#1-10 have produced 7 winners. #11-20 have produced 4 winners. #21-30 produced 19 winners (if you count #38 from the 40 man Rumble).

If you are unsure why there are 30 winners so far but we're only just coming up to our 30th Rumble, please watch the 1994 Royal Rumble match.

It's the 'MY TIME IS NOW' era as John Cena returned to completely shut down the new era. He sets the record straight, he's not leaving and is on the quest to try and win his 16th world title. He issued out a challenge to the WWE Champion for a match at Royal Rumble. AJ Styles had to firstly defend his title that night against Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin, which he done successfully, the result was never in doubt! We now have the 3rd installment of AJ Styles vs John Cena, having already faced each other in brilliant matches at Money in the Bank and Summerslam, if you haven't already done so please check those out.

SmackDown presented the standard WWE Championship contract signing. Great exchange of words between the two, AJ seems to be confused as he mentioned Cena had the title last time they faced. John Cena has amazingly been without the WWE Championship for two and a half years. Cena stated he perhaps does need a win to prove he is worthy of his shot, up steps potential new top star Baron Corbin to interrupt and set up a match for the following week's SmackDown Live.

AJ Styles called out John Cena on the go home episode of SmackDown Live. AJ Styles felt disrespected by the way Cena and the hosts of The Today Show were discussing him as if he were a complete nobody and the fact he's at the back of the PPV poster whilst Cena is right up front. AJ Styles claims he's been holding down SmackDown Live since Cena has been gone. "You've been hot for like 6 months I held this place down for well over a decade" asserts John Cena as he fires back some home truths that leave Styles in the middle of the ring stunned and speechless.

We have ourselves a WWE Universal Championship rematch between Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns, Roadblock: End of the Line was left on a bit of a sour note as Chris Jericho once again got involved and the match was ended via DQ. This brought Jeri-KO back together however, after appearing to fall out the weeks leading up to the event. Mick Foley has commissioned a match at Royal Rumble in which Chris Jericho will be suspended high above the ring inside a shark cage to prevent him from interfering, as he has in almost every Kevin Owens match.

Previously, Roman Reigns lost his WWE United States Championship to Chris Jericho (& Kevin Owens) in a handicap match on Raw. This week the three men came out to start the show and discuss Sunday's WWE Universal Championship match. Kevin Owens was gloating about being the only person to powerbomb Reigns through the announce table, meanwhile Y2J accidentally talks himself into giving Reigns a US title rematch and managed to coin the name "Chris Salamicho".

Owens of course caused a DQ and they gave Reigns a post-match beating. They attempted to put him inside the shark cage but Reigns fought back and it was Owens that ended up being hoisted up into the air. This resulted in a pretty cool spot with Y2J hanging from the bottom of the cage as it's going up in the air and Reigns catching him with the Superman Punch. Once a furious Kevin Owens was finally let out, he was informed that his match on Sunday would now be a No Disqualification match.

Moving on from a back and forth feud between 2 of the best in Charlotte and Sasha Banks, Charlotte has came out on top, only just.... She now has competition in the form of the very huggable Bailey. Bailey had 2 previous wins over Charlotte from Raw matches, this appeared to rattle her and was challenged to another match on this week's Raw episode (non title), to which Charlotte accepted and subsequently lost to go 3-0 down. Charlotte's 15-0 PPV record is all that matters though and it's very likely she'll put this on the line against Bailey in what is sure to be a great match.

Stephanie McMahon granted Bayley a #1 contender match on Raw against Nia Jax, with the winner facing Charlotte at Royal Rumble. Sasha Banks provided the distraction which led to a Bayley-to-belly from the turnbuckle for Bayley's victory and subsequently will face Charlotte at this PPV.

Charlotte insults the WWE Universe and tries to expose Bayley and her WWE obsession. Bayley responds with a few poems about what's going to happen at the Royal Rumble. The following week, Corey Graves sits down with each woman individually. Bayley once again talks about how much she loved WWE growing up and she asserts that she will walk away from Royal Rumble as the new WWE Raw Women's Champion. Charlotte discusses surpassing her father's legacy, her former friendship with her current rival Bayley and maintaining that she will remain the queen of PPV.

At Roadblock: End of the Line, WWE Cruiserweight Champion Rich Swann successfully defended his title against TJ Perkins & Brian Kendrick. After the match, a returning Neville appeared, viciously attacking both Perkins & Kendrick, thus turning heel. The following night on Raw, Neville cuts a scathing promo lashing out at the WWE Universe. The self proclaimed "King of the Cruiserweights" Neville put the division on notice and stated he would obliterate all of them. True to his word he, along with Kendrick put a beatdown on Swann & Perkins.

On Dec 27th, Neville sat down with Renee Young to explain why he's now joined the Cruiserweight division. Later that evening on 205 Live Nevile faced off against the champion Rich Swann in a non-title match, a great back and forth match which Neville won. He then gave Swann a brutal post match beatdown like he has done in the previous weeks.

On the Jan 10th episode of 205 Live, Rich Swann defeated Tony Nese and afterwards called out Neville. Neville refused to step in the ring until he got what he deserved, a WWE Cruiserweight Championship match. Swann told Neville to name his time and place and that whenever or wherever it happens, "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THIS". Neville then declared that he will have his official coronation at Royal Rumble when he becomes the new WWE Cruiserweight Champion.

At Roadblock: End of the Line, The New Day's record breaking title reign came to an end at the hands of Cesaro and Sheamus. The following night on Raw, Mick Foley presented the pair with brand new WWE Raw Tag Team Championships, the same as the SmackDown ones except red of course.

The following week, The New Day invoked their rematch clause and the champions managed to successfully defend at the first time of asking.

Moving on from this, Cesaro and Sheamus competed in numerous singles matches against Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. This team have been sniffing around at the top for a while and they got their shot at the WWE Raw Tag Team Championships on the Jan 16th episode of Raw. This was a good match, the controversial finish has led to a rematch being announced for the Royal Rumble Kickoff Show this Sunday. Sheamus accidentally assaulted the official, Gallows and Anderson took over the match hitting Magic Killer. Whilst the originally referee was down, a new one came out for the count. 1.......2.......3.  Here are your winners and NEW...... No. Originally referee gets back up and over rules the decision calling it a DQ by Sheamus. Their announced match will now have two referees assigned to it, interesting to see how that plays out.

Sasha Banks came out on the losing end of her previous feud with WWE Raw Women's Champion Charlotte. On Raw the night after Roadblock: End of the Line, she came out to express that Charlotte was the better woman and to congratulate her but was instead met by the monster that is Nia Jax who subsequently destroyed the vulnerable Sasha Banks.

On the 2nd Jan Raw episode Stephanie McMahon made a #1 contender's match between Bayley and Nia Jax with the winner facing Charlotte at Royal Rumble. Sasha Banks came out to distract Nia Jax, she was then hit with the Bayley-to-Belly and lost the match.

Sasha Banks costing Nia Jax her match made her even more angry as she assaulted Banks again, this time out in the ring before Raw had even opened up to the public. And of course, Sasha Banks had to retaliate to that this week as well by coming down after Nia's match to beat her down with the cruth she has been using for weeks. This resulted in a match between the two being added to the Royal Rumble Kickoff Show.

Here is the official theme for Royal Rumble 2017:

Shawn Michaels will be a special guest on the Kickoff Show. Royal Rumble this year is in his home of San Antonio, Texas and they'll likely be looking for his opinions on the matches that night. In particular the Royal Rumble match itself as he was a two time winner (1995&1996), so his knowledge and experience is welcome. There's a good chance he'll use it as another opportunity to plug his new movie again, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone. Jerry Lawler will also join the Kickoff Show.

Sasha Banks vs Nia Jax (Kickoff Match).

Cesaro and Sheamus (C) vs Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championships. Two referees assigned to this match (Kickoff Match).

Build for this is going to be fucking torture.  Creative are at their best when they're scrambling with a 3 week build.  RAW have 7, Smackdown have 9.  I know they're furthering other stories before turning full to the Rumble, but really not looking forward to the January trudge through.

Any chance of a separate rumble for the ladies this year? Maybe a 15 woman rumble? Will help to fill up a 4-hour show...

As long as it's not over the top rope.

Count me in. And while we're all dishing out greenies for Jamie's excellent introductions, let's also remember his unforgivable caddishness two years ago in the Rumble pool (at least I think it was him).

It depends whether they got the date right on the injury of Balor.  I vaguely remember someone saying something about the dates not quite matching up for the injury he had, but I think it still puts it touch and go.  Balor winning would be fine for me.  Otherwise I think it's Jericho, which is a bit meh for me.  He deserves it, undoubtedly, but I just can't get excited about an Owens/Jericho match at the moment, particularly THE match at WM.

Outside of that it's a bit unclear at the moment.  Could be Undertaker depending on what happens in the next few weeks.  Could be Cena.  Think it'll be a RAW winner though unless Styles drops the belt before then.

iirc Balor said he was targeting before just Wrestlemania when he and Bayley were interviewed by Sky Sports. Hoping to see Samoa Joe be an entrant as well.

What sort of crazy shit do we think Kofi Kingston will pull this Rumble?
