Colt teams - again

I don't see much merit in flinging 11 kids in against men. Killie's weans looked lost against us. They really toiled with the physical side of the game. It's ok quoting the system in Germany, but their u20s are fitter, more physically developed and more skillful than their Scottish counterparts. That said, I don't have an alternative.

Celtic could, and should, be playing more kids, such is their dominance. So what if they lose a few games? They'll benefit in the long run.

Reforming the reserve league?  Give the kids experience, give players coming back from injury some game time, try out some trialists - and don't turn the competitive, meaningful competitions of the smaller clubs into a training ground for the big ones.

So this seemingly reared it's head again yesterday on Off the Ball with Stuart Cosgrove claiming that a deal had been agreed which would see U20s from Celtic and Rangers being allowed into League Two at the start of next season. On the thread in the Division 2 forum someone is however claiming that it will be the Lowland League that they are being entered into.

Can't see Lowland League fans being overly happy about this. Shambles if it's true especially with some of the things that go along with it. And if it is true it's just the fucking beginning. How long before the b*****ds are wanting promoted into the league?

Will devalue the competition and drive people away. The very essence of football is eleven v eleven where both sets of players and fans desperately want to win.  Youth teams entering the league would take away from that. The fans wouldn’t care and the focus would be on developing players rather than winning. What would the point be for the existing clubs?

I’d rather Queen’s Park played in the juniors than watch this sham. At least the competition would be authentic. The clubs, including Queen’s Park, must be vocal in their opposition to this.

Colt teams have already ruined the early rounds of a pointless but mildly entertaining cup.

They would inevitably cause a similar amount of disinterest in the games of whatever league they end up in. The utter dominance of the OF has been the downfall of Scottish football not them only having one team in the league.

Imagine this had been going on a few years ago would rangers have to face their colt team on the way back up?

Heard that,Cosgrove also said that the colt teams cant be promoted, they,d play all games away from home and each club would be given the equivalent of 300 supporters in payment each game

Something just doesn,t ring true

It's quite obviously a an attempt by Huncaster and his cohorts to try to cream in extra TV revenue. There's probably some downmarket pay per view channel that will by this to sell to the fans of the ugly sisters. And there is no doubt Huncaster's terms and conditions will contain a bonus for any TV or commercial revenue generated.

The most recent thing I could find was in this rag so not really, no

Although it does sound worryingly like if this happens it'll be steamrolled through regardless of the opinion of the clubs (and their fans) that it'll affect.

Probably not, but it is now down the clubs to bury this nonsense

Can you imagine how fucking pissed off you'd be to find that a game which you could have attended on a Saturday afternoon with your season ticket had been changed to another day/time to accommodate TV viewing of some under 20s and you could no longer make the new date.

Indeed, although I would imagine the prime target would be to get the four games between the two colt teams onto the telly. Their fans would pure lap it up so they would.

There have been developments since this thread was last active almost a year ago... In the spring the SPFL announced distribution of a 'blueprint' to clubs and began a consultation on it (press release was issued the evening before Scotland v England in June). There was also a survey by Supporters Direct - although it was not worded neutrally, some 75% of 1,071 respondents were still 'against'.

Several clubs declared themselves 'against'.

Most of the details are covered in link of mrmince's i.e. U21; woolly wording about where they would 'ordinarily' start (plus of course the Lowland isn't the bottom of the pyramid); first floating of over age players being permitted (something which was then applied to the Challenge Cup but wasn't announced like its other adjustments); and loans; allowed to ascend as far as SPFL1; claims of it possibly enhancing crowds!; etc. etc.

If you go to the thread in the SPFL2 sub-forum, which has been 'live' throughout the last year, you'll find the details. Similarly any online search will turnup articles from the spring of this year. Almost half of posts in SPFL2 sub-forum thread are since January.

There has been nothing in the press during the last few months and some of Cosgrove's detail... in particular that they wouldn't play home games, and the idea of them paying... is new detail. It will be interesting to see if his claims are refuted as inaccurate; corroborated; or if recent silence continues.
