Stenny v Rovers

Recommended Posts

Stenhousemuir have a 41-year-old Scott Walker on the bench today.

A decent enough first half, all in all. There's been good chances from either side, with Albion Rovers having a goal chalked off for a foul on Fraser Kerr (although the whistle had gone before the ball was in the back of the net). There's also been a bit of a needle between the sides with some bad tackles and Jobber McCormack going head to head with Steven Boyd.

All to play for!

A very important, very satisfying win today. It was a pretty even contest throughout (despite what the Albion Rovers Twitter feed might suggest) - Stenhousemuir probably had more of the ball, Albion Rovers probably had the better of the chances - but it was settled by a sublime goal from Willis Alves Furtado. Until that point, we hadn't ever really got in behind the Vers but Kieran Millar's fantastic long pass appeared to catch Kyle Turnbull off-guard, giving Furtado the fraction of time he needed to bring the ball under control, shift it to the space on his left and send a gorgeous curling shot beyond the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net. Furtado hadn't done much at all and had spent the majority of the second half on the fringes but moments like that are the kind of thing he's capable of. When he celebrated the goal he kissed the badge; you're fooling no-one, pal.

Other than the goal, I can't really think of much to analyse from the match. I like Albion Rovers, I admire their organisation and work ethic and on another day they would have emerged with a point. They did become outrageously ramshackle in the dying minutes when big Mick Dunlop was thrown forward in a doomed bid to find an equaliser and Stenhousemuir should have scored with one of their four chances - Oliver Shaw could have had a hat-trick and the way Alan Cook flopped to the ground when one-on-one with the goalie was tragicomic - but on the whole, there's plenty to appreciate. Darren Young and Billy Stark surely deserve a shot whenever the next mid-card full-time post becomes available.

As for the Warriors, it was one of the most professional I've seen from them this season. I can't think of any failures at all today. Colin McCabe made some smart saves and although he could communicate with his defence better (there was an awkward moment in the second half where Ciaran Summers headed the ball straight to Scott McBride when he should have left it), Ross Meechan and Fraser Kerr strolled through the match, the latter especially, both full-backs played well from both attacking and defensive perspectives, Vinnie Berry and Kieran Millar grafted and grafted and grafted, Cook and Furtado did well enough whenever they found themselves on the ball and, despite their obvious limitations, Ally Roy and Colin McMenamin also put a shift in.

The three points have brought us right back into contention with the teams above us. Beat East Fife on Tuesday night and we'll move off the bottom of the table since October. Heady times indeed.

We beat Albion Rovers! YASS!

Huge 3 points. We are back in the mix. A few teams will be looking over their shoulders now

I thought we deserved that today. Just couldn't see Albion scoring. Which given our defensive record is saying something.

Keeper looked confident, defence composed for the most part and midfield non stop running. Strikers for the most part struggled but Willis goal was a corker. But he has it in his locker (sorry).

Thankfully those misses at the end didn't cost us. Had to be seen to be believed.

Would be massive to follow this up with a win on Tuesday. When was the last time we had back to back wins? It feels like years.

We have a fighting chance of staying up if we keep Willie but if someone takes a chance on him in January it would be a massive blow for us.

The result was more important than the football on offer which to be honest was pretty dire at times. Felt we needed to more low crosses into the box as their centre backs were mopping up everything.  Good overall team performance but can't help wondering what will happen if we loose Miller or Berry to injury or suspension.  Agree that Rovers did not look likely to score which for us was a big bonus.

Scott Walker at 41 - are we that desperate at the moment. Think he could do a job as a coach but if we are relying on him to play we really are in a dark place. McCormack needs to take a step back and think about his stupid booking. Had it developed further it could easily have been a sending off - why go forehead to forehead when we need every player we have.  Again there is a failure with McCabe and the defence failing to communicate, someone has to take command and shout whether to elave it or not.  At times it looked liked the defence were reluctant to pass the ball back to him.

What is Crawford's injury or is he going to play again soon?

If we can do East Fife on Tuesday then things become interesting again.

All teams in this league rely on important players and suffer when they are missing. Take Ryan out of the Airdrie team for example. Or the Dunlop brothers out of that Albion Rovers team. Often it is the difference between staying up or not.

I wouldn't fret too much about Walker. He is helping us out in many ways. We need his experience at the back even if it just in an advisory/coaching role.

McCabe is playing well just now and has some confidence back, which makes a huge difference.

Stenhousemuir could and should have scored 3 at the end of that game.  Good to see the Rovers disallowed goal (video highlights normally leave away teams controversial decisions off - so thanks for adding) - which imo was a perfectly good goal - the guy just falls at Micks feet. anyway well done Stenny - the jinx is finally over.
