To be fair to the SFA Austin McPhee was a bawhair away from getting the gig which would have been a fantastic appointment, unfortunately Hearts sneaked in and he obviously preferred to be Cathro's right hand man than take this job.

Mackay was the 2nd choice.

Rather than being fair to them it actually highlights their incompetence,  the contrast their top two show's they have no real idea of what is needed to take the game forward.

They should be profiling who they want and going after that same type of person rather than playing hit and miss.

Absolutely ragin at this, the only argument I can see for him is that he'll be able to step in when Strachan inevitably steps down/is punted. Hope we don't have the brass neck to participate in the next 'show racism the red card' event. Words mean nothing when you are happy to hire a man like him.

WTF do the SFA hope to achieve with this appointment? Even if he achieves slow, steady progress at grassroots level, he'll still be overshadowed by everything that's gone before. A total own goal by the SFA.

What brainwaves will we have next? Fresh shit smeared on every one of the Hampden seats and a statue of a triumphant Jimmy Saville erected outside the south stand?

This is what really confuses me, how can you have your top 2 candidates as Austin McPhee and Malky Mackay? The two couldn't really be much more different in terms of their experience and skillset. As you say, surely they had a profile of what they were looking for and the shortlist should have been made up of people who fitted that profile. Not a random selection of candidates.

What the shortlist really shows is how crap a job it is in the eyes of most people. We lose our first choice candidate to be assistant manager at Hearts, and appoint someone who only wants the job because he knows no-one will touch him with a bargepole.

Absolutely no idea why the SFAs shortlist was all of "managers", when clearly the best option would've been someone who's had this type of role before, more than likely a foreigner.

Its an absolute joke that Mackay can be completely blackballed from the management game, but can stroll into the most important job we have.

They tried the foreign option before and it failed because the SFA don't want someone coming in and telling them how it is, so are playing it (what they see as) safe. What Wotte showed is that one person in this post isn't really going to make a difference anyway, the whole culture of the organisation needs changed. Unfortunetly that isn't going to happen.

This is a terrible idea for a number of reasons.

He'll be gone at the first hint of a decent club being prepared to hire him as a manager and appears to have very little relevant experience for the job.

Most importantly, however, is the message it sends out given his racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-Semitic text messages.  If they appoint him, the SFA will be abandoning any integrity they might have had when it comes to anti-discrimination campaigns.

Malky Mackay should not be anywhere near such a prestigious job with our governing body.

What a bizarre appointment. Seems like the SFA's thinking went a bit like this:

'Well, as the young, progressive, forward-thinking candidate turned us down for the Hearts assistant coach's role, who have we got left? Oh yes, the old racist homophobe. He'll have to do then."

Frightening.

Considering we're just entering the absolute shitstorm that is the child abuse scandal, what the f**k kind of message is this to send out to the parents of kids wanting to get into the game?

"Aye well, we don't think the coaches are shagging the weans any more but just to be sure we're putting the most famously racist, homophobic bigot in UK football in charge"

See if your kid was an excellent football player, and you were black, Asian or Jewish, or if your kid was gay, how confident would you feel about him getting a fair crack of the whip, or having concerns dealt with with that clown in charge?  This appointment is a joke, and just puts up another barrier to getting this country's football into the 1990s, never mind the present day.

Is this absolute disgrace of an appointment official yet?

It has not been officially confirmed. However a number of media sources - including credible outlets like the Herald, the BBC and so on - report matter of factly that he will be unveiled on Thursday.

'Show Racism the Red Card' have already congratulated him on the post (adding he'd undertaken diversity training), and Paul Goodwin of the Supporters Association seems similarly unequivocal.

Utterly pathetic and lazy appointment.  Are we still sticking with the must be Scottish policy?  Why not somebody with a fresh outlook who can generate new ideas and start from scratch? We'll never improve as a nation if we don't try and learn from others.

When McClair left Stewart Regan said the role "requires a different style of leadership and focus".

Fair do's - they've certainly found somebody with a different style of leadership and a unique focus.

I don't pay a huge deal of attention to the SFA etc but reading the statements made when Brian McClair left, he was frustrated at having to spend time in boardrooms rather than working on coaching, with players etc.

SO why not appoint an executive or backroom person, someone who's been involved in the administration of football?  Not an average manager?  Really odd.
