Lowland League vs Top of EOS

Recommended Posts

Lothian THV, Leith Ath and Tynecastle FC have been very strong these past seasons. LTHV have been champions twice in three years, Leith are the defending champions. and Tynecastle have been in the top four three seasons in a row. This season again the three are pushing for the EOS title. But how have the three done when facing Lowland League opposition?

LTHV 200 5-2 6

Leith 113 3-8 4

Tynecastle 101 1-2 3

The three matches against Selkirk and Preston Ath, the bottom teams from the LL, have resulted in three of the four wins. Still Tynecastle have beaten Spartans, Leith played Cumbernauld to a tough draw in the big Scottish cup, and Lothian THV have not lost a match yet.

Ah, this is my kind of thread.

Here are the overall stats for LL v EOSL in the cups since its establishment, and cases of EOSL clubs winning or drawing. I've greyed-out those involving Ed Uni, CSS and Hawick.

Ties decided on penalties count as a draw.

Against a background of fairly poor figures overall, certainly most of the positive results have been delivered by Leith, LTHV, Heriot-Watt Uni and Tynecastle.

In particular Leith and LTHV.

Losses (and draws) by LL clubs:

Vale of Leithen 4 (0)

Whitehill Welfare 4 (0)

Stirling Uni 3 (0)

Preston 3 (0)

Selkirk 3 (0)

Gala 3 (0)

Gretna 1 (2)

Edinburgh City 1 (1)

Dalbeattie 1 (0)

East Kilbride 1 (0)

Spartans 1 (0)

Cumbernauld 0 (1)

Not on the list representing the LL: BSC Glasgow, East Stirlingshire, CSS, Edinburgh Uni, Hawick RA, Threave.

Of course they have faced the EOS-teams an uneven number of times, and there is a huge difference between meeting Burntisland Shipyard and LTHV. Still interesting that it's not only the likes of Selkirk and Preston that are high on the list, but also stronger LL teams like Whitehill Welfare and Stirling Uni.

Few games missing hibbee. Leith have played cumbernauld 4 times competitively in the last two seasons:

South Cup: Colts 0-0 Leith (Colts 2-1 in et)
Scottish: Leith 0-0 Colts
Replay: Colts 1-0 Leith
South Cup: Leith 1-4 Colts

Aside from the last one, all close games with only one goal in 270 regulation minutes.

Hard to tell in one off games, but having seen Leith in all 4 of these I would confidently say they would more then hold their own in the LL. Very good side with a couple of players in particular who could slot into the top LL sides no bother in my opinion.
