PIE AND BOVRIL - 50 GREATEST GAMES OF ALL TIME

Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Sonic2 European Box.jpg

Now we have my main man Sonic.  What a guy, even with his wee gay pal Tails tagging along.

As mentioned in the Mario entry I was very much a SEGA/Sonic man back in the early 90s.  The original Sonic game was the 1st ever game I saw on a console (ever ever ever ever) and I was so astounded by the fact that Sonic could go behind the waterfall in the first game that I was pretty much hooked on computers for life afterwards.  I can remember who's house I was in, what street it was in and almost remember the begging I did towards my parents as a 5 year old to get me Sonic.

However enough about me and indeed the original Sonic as this entry is about Sonic The Hedgehog 2.  By the time this came out I was onto Mega Drive and just looking at the artwork above for the cover makes my hair stand on end a bit.  In general I am very much into the nostalgia factor of how it looked so don't be surprised to see similar comments from me about other games.

Sonic 2 really did have so much more going for it than the original.  First, in my opinion, the levels were far better in Sonic 2 with Chemical Plant and Casino Night being my favourites.  I actually don't think I made it into the last couple of levels of the game with some of the names, Genocide City for example, being a little bit extreme for the audience it was aimed at.  Here are some screenshots for your enjoyement:

What I enjoyed most about Sonic 2, and I'm sure most people were the same, was the new bonus level which was displayed in 3D and was so enjoyable to play.  Although now I am saying that there was a great level of satisfaction in the bonus level of the original Sonic where you had to smash as many emeralds as possible on a rotating screen.

Sonic 2 was a Two Player - which was fantastic fun.

What a game!! Although not on my list but perhaps it should've been.

Sonic took 17 points on our poll and was voted in the following positions by our voters:

  • 2x 6th place
  • 1 x 4th place

You mean Tails, sir!

The fucking boss fight with Robotnik at the end of this game, honestly.

Elder Scrolls Oblivion

12 months ago I would probably have just written "never played, don't know about it, someone else talk about it".  Now I haven't ever played this, or Skyrim, but based on my Bethesda experience over the last 12 months I have became a bit of a fanboy for anything they make and as such will play this and Skyrim at some point.  I wouldn't normally expect these "non-realistic" games to be quite my thing but Fallout and how it is done has probably changed this.

Hopefully a real fan will be able to come and share some stories about the game but I assume it was pretty good?  Certainly it won Game of the Year back in 2007 and I remember it being on the shelves for quite a while.  Is Elder Scrolls the geek version of Grand Theft Auto perhaps - very big open world games with longevity?

Elder Scrolls Oblivion was given universal praise by critics with scoring averaging over 90%.  Whilst scoring only 17 points in our poll might seem low it is placing above ISS Pro, Mario and level with Sonic 2 which probably reflects how good a game it actually is.

Oblivion is our "most voted" top 50 game so far and  was voted as:

  • 1 x 2nd place
  • 1 x 5th place
  • 2 x 10th place

Sure did - Knuckles came later in the series I think?

Aye, Knuckles first featured in 3 then became a playable character in the fourth instalment, funnily enough called Sonic & Knuckles.

Sorry to be a big nerd but when you're writing up your short reviews, "Dindeleux", could you try to make them less subjective please? Stuff like "I liked this game" and "I never played it" juts isn't cutting it.

Sorry mate what would you prefer?  Don't just give me barriers give me solutions.

When we get to the higher ranked game I hope to have some more value to add in terms of sales figures, technology etc but for the time being I'm really just giving my own opinions on the games as they come.

Feel free to write a better review of each game than me FF, if you can be fucked.

Crash Team Racing

Hopefully this review is to Francesc Fabregas liking :)

Crash Team Racing came out on the Playstation back in 1999 and was very much an attempt to cash in on the popularity of the Crash Bandicoot series whilst at the same time blatantly stealing the format from Mario Kart - but to be fair what a steal and a fantastically fun game.

CTR was the final Crash Bandicoot game to be made by developer Naughty Dog and they really just focused on making a fun, and fast, game.  It filled a gap in the market at the time as the Playstation didn't really have any of these fun racers at the time - it was lacking a game to mirror Mario Kart and games like Micro Machines on the Mega Drive (which I think was mentioned by someone earlier on in the thread).

CTR was in the plus 8/10 range when reviewed by most of the main critics and scored 17 points in our poll.

Scoring was:

  • 1 x 1st place
  • 1 x 7th place
  • 1 x 8th place

More to come tomorrow..............

ISS Pro

Absolutely delighted that this has made it through to the Top 50 and I think that it is the only football game that made the top 50 (the reason I say think is that I've counted the list/scoring but tried to make an effort not to look at the names to keep it more interesting for me).

Iss PRO was one of my choices and I'm glad that a couple of others have agreed with me.  I think it would've been a travesty if none of the Pro Ev series had made the list as they gave us so many good games.  From ISS Pro right the way through to Pro Ev 5/6 were relatively speaking the greatest football games ever made.  The screenshot above gives me a semi to be honest.  Many hours were spent on this game by me and my best friend in school.  I actually think we saw 9/11 live because we were dogging the school to play ISS Pro - can't say that for definite but the amount of time wasted was unreal.

One of the best things about ISS Pro, compared to other games, was the addition of the player morale choices as per below.  This gave you some decisions as to whether to play your best players OR your happiest players.  If a player had a blue face then you would be concerned about picking him.

Really just a glorious game and one that I am delighted has made the list.   ISS Pro - we salute you.

16 points for ISS Pro which was voted by you as:

  • 1 x 2nd place
  • 1 x 4th place

:D stunned that other than my 2nd place that this only 1 other vote!  Shame on you all.  The game that got me addicted to the playstation.

If you plugged Sonic 2 in to the top of Sonic and Knuckles then you could play Sonic 2 as Knuckles (gliding and climbing included). Same with Sonic 3. If you plugged a random game in to Sonic and Knuckles you got a bonus stage.

I played this at the weekend. It's still brilliant and I'm still exceptional at it.

Only 3 of us voted for it though! For shame folk

What the f**k? Must've been the wee lass jabbing at my phone [emoji1]

Great to see ISS / PES make the list. The career mode or whatever it was called where you start with a team of nobodies and gain points to spend on 'signings'. Brilliant.

Better still when classic players were included. Garrincha's mazies and Batistuta's thunderbolts, never forget!
