Forfar AFC v TNS

They called themselves "The New Saints" in order to retain the "TNS" abbreviation after "Total Network Solutions" withdrew.

As I said on another thread this was the obvious tie to result in an Irish/Welsh victory. TNS are full-time, has won the Welsh Premier League for 5yrs running, play in CL every season etc. etc. whereas Forfar were the lowest-ranked Scottish side left.

How good are TNS or are they vastly overrated , i assume championship sides should be too strong for them

Based on today a Championship team would see off TNS I would think bar the striker they were no better than us.

Can you imagine what will happen though if they go on to win it (not outside the realms of possibility)? Scottish football will be an even bigger laughing stock than before.

There's a certain arrogance to the Welsh/Northern Irish wild card entries, "let's make this non-event more exotic for the diddy clubs & their diddy cup - not to worry chaps, there's no chance of them ever winning...".

The other Welsh sides may be gash but The New Saints don't need much motivation to strive to take another new trophy to add to their already ridiculous collection.

Feed them to the Lions we will knock another newcomer to their knees.

The only problem in Neil Doncaster's vision of football in the next decade was the fact that Forfar beat Raith Rovers in the last round. TNS would have been grubbed by a decent Championship team.

At great risk of repeating myself

From talking to the fans and doing a wee bit of research, we are looking at a rerun of Gretna. The owner apparently bought over Oswestry Town simply to capture their ground, and renamed the club The New Saints because he was not allowed to use the name of a business, ie Total Network Solutions. He is offering silly wages for the Welsh League, and providing full time football, for as long as the money lasts. I watched Bala Town v Alloa this morning, and, according to the TNS fans, that is the average standard for Welsh football. Out of this comes a well done to Forfar, who, if they had a decent goalkeeper might have done rather better. Still, it's better to be out of a joke competition and put the whole farce out of mind and concentrate on more important things.

The New Saints are the opposite of Gretna.

They were a small village club Llansantffraid who were hijacked by the telecom company Total Network Solutions (a common situation in the Welsh leagues at that time - there was also Inter CableTel of Cardiff) who swallowed up the failing Oswestry Town in turn (behind some of their shareholders' backs). When TNS were bought over by BT, they were left in the lurch - but they proved that they could survive without their financial doping and thrive. Two years after their obituary had been written by the "experts", they thumped Bohemians of Dublin in the European Cup, the year afterwards they put out Cliftonville.

Gretna had stiffer opposition as they moved upwards.TNS don't appear to have any real test.Any attendance figure from yesterday.TNS seem a bit shy on attendance figures as well.

Yep, which is the dilemma the League of Wales finds itself in - even the Cockwomble couldn't fk up our league the way they've destroyed their own.

During the Total Network Solutions & Inter Cardiff era, clubs like Barry Town, Connah's Quay Nomads, Llanelli, Neath & Rhyl began spending money they didn't have trying to keep up with the increasingly silly sums being spent by the others, were financially crippled & either bankrupted or forcibly relegated to the bottom tier, and by the time they'd climbed back up the leagues many fans had gone for good.

A lot of the old historical clubs such as Abergavenny Tuesdays, Cefn Druids, Cwmbran Town, Ebbw Vale, Mold Alexandra, Oswestry Town, Rhayader Town & Welshpool simply couldn't cope & faded away, folded or were "merged" (ie. taken over) by rivals to be asset stripped for profit - with them went that base of fans domestic league Welsh football had relied on for decades.

Bangor City and Llandudno have recently been taken over by people promising "warchests" and the like (the ones at Bangor of particular concern as it's the same clown car that bankrupted Chester City). Looks like they'll be the next to join the role of dishonour.

691... slightly better than average. Attendance probably helped by it being a lovely day and with few other games on there will have been a few neutrals (myself included). The TNS fans may have been outnumbered but made more noise than the Forfar support, even before they scored.
