From the Guardian's Brussels correspondent:

  • The British diplomats asked to start technical talks led by civil servants, while gov sorts out itself/Queen's speech 2

  • Barnier said no. EU side want to ensure UK’s chief negotiator has a mandate from the British gov before formal talks can begin 3

  • EU wants reliable, accountable, chief negotiator with a mandate, but not sure they will get one 4

Barnier told the British he was open to a number of start dates, listing various days of the week. Robbins and Barrow could not name a day 5

  • Barnier also spent some time explaining to the British the EU's preferred 4-week cycle for running the negotiations 6

Remember UK not done trade talks for decades. The EU has scores of people who specialise in international negotiations, not just trade /7

British gov has not sent any details of its Brexit position to Brussels and no one knows what British really want now/ 8

What an utter car crash we are as a nation. Aside from the fact that I think it's a terrible idea, I'm not convinced that Brexit is achievable at all. Particularly if you have a government so f*cking incompetent that they called an election after triggering Article 50.

Not a shock, the UK government try to glide along the water gracefully like a swan while their feet are turning faster than a speedboats propeller, bullshitters extraordinaire.

It's hard to believe that the Tories are still getting away with peddling the myth that we can leave the Single Market and still get a good trade deal.  A responsible media would be highlighting the fact that this is not going to happen.

By the time the truth has emerged we will be so far down the road that there will be huge damage to the economy even if the UK tries to backtrack.

I can only assume that those who believed the '£350 million for the NHS' slogan on the bus are equally as gullible/stupid when it comes to this issue.

With a resounding success for Marie Le Pen in France as well as Geert Wilders in the Netherlands and with a massive majority in the House of Commons, Theresa May can now be assured of exactly the Brexit deal that she wants.

How is that plan working out?

Aye we're trying to get "the best deal" which will probably be worse than what we've got just now.

Absolutely farcical.

I would think it almost certainly has to be worse, what would be the point of membership if you get the same or better outside the EU.

Why would anyone enter any negotiations looking for anything other than "the best deal possible"?

This is pointed out on page 1 of chapter 1 of "Idiot's Guide to Negotiating."

Do you think they're intelligent enough to get a copy?

I've got a copy.  I've even had a look at page 2 so I know what they are going to say next week.

Bend over and take some more?

Formal confirmation UK has capitulated on day one, on UK's insistence on parallel talks on divorce and trade. EU gets way on sequencing.
Well that's a great start. Total capitulation on day 1.

No.  You are getting ahead of yourself - last chapter even.

Chapter 1 is Bullshitting
Chapter 2 is Stalling for time
Chapter 3 is Playing a crap hand
Chapter 4 is Blaming the other side
Chapter 5 is Talking about the Second World War and maybe the first as well.
Chapter 6 is Admitting that your tactics have failed and pleading for mercy.

So the negotiation tactic of quoting Churchill and expecting Frenchie to surrender didn't work?
Strange that.

Tomorrow's tactic: singing "two World Wars and one World Cup" over and over again
