Ooft imagine the toxic cloud forming in that, in the days when folk were allowed to smoke. And EVERYONE smoked.

there used to be a huge cloud of dust when a goal was scored, your snotters were jet black for a week after a high scoring game.

Having never really experienced old Hampden first-hand it amazes me that it took so long for them to concrete the terraces! I know that when the place was built it was important that they use terracing made of earth rather than wooden stands like Leitch's from Ibrox that ultimately led to the first Ibrox disaster as people can't fall through solid earth. The site that the third (current) Hampden Park is on used to be a farm situated in a natural bowl of land so it was fairly easy to build up banks of earth to create the terracing.

Just before the old Provie Road and TC Keay ends were demolished to make way for the Bobby Cox and Bob Shankly Stands. Greyhound track in view!

It amazes me how Dens still seems to have kept a lot of its historical shape  despite the two new stands behind the goals. In relation to the poster who asked why a lot of old grounds were oval-shaped as opposed to rectangular the V-shaped main stand will have been designed with that in mind - maximising the amount of supporters you can have inside the ground.

I'm pretty sure they had athletics meetings at Dens in the 40s/50s.

I remember that happening at a Scotland game, the only time I was ever in the Rangers end.

Always liked the massive goal stanchions at Hampden - when the ball went in there, it stayed in and you knew it was a goal!  And these winter pictures are fantastic - but make me shiver just looking at them!  Especially the Cappielow one!

Do you mean in the corner? It's cut-out to fit the corner of the pitch. Still there today, with red sponsorship now (at least in this photo):

That's what i meant? Remember it but not sure why.

Seems easier to have just terracing down to pitch level?

I always loved those corners. Something a bit different and genuinely unique.
