Las Vegas

Doing a stag do in Vegas next year. Any hotel recommendations and/or activity recommendations for the day times? Obviously nights will involve drunken gambling.

I've put the foot down about the necessity to go to a gun range and shoot an AR-15 one day, but other than that still looking for ideas!

I stayed at the Aria.  Probably the nicest hotel.  It's the newest one and smack bang in the centre of the strip.  I visited all the major ones.  I do think the aria had the nicest floor.  Mandalay Bay was nice too, although it's at the end of the strip.  The bellagio was always heaving.  New York and Monte Carlo were ok too.  Avoid Excalibur, circus circus and the stratosphere.  Check out Fremont street at night but by all means use the bus or take a cab as the area between the strip and there makes Aleppo look plush.

For a stag I would suggest Caesars. It is by no means the greatest hotel but it is right in the middle of the strip and is still very nice. Depends what you want to do but if you plan on casino hopping whilst boozing then Caesars would be ideal. You can drink on the street but no glass bottles, the booze itself can be expensive but some of the cheaper hotels do offer decent deals for domestic beers. Going to at least one nightclub is a good idea but that in itself can work out very expensive (Caesar's has Omnia which is good).

The good news in terms of hotels is that you will be able to get a good one for a great price as they are all competing for your business. If you don't mind not staying right on the strip you will be laughing with how cheap it can get. Fremont is a good shout for a cheap evening. You can get $1 tables and dirt cheap booze compared to the usual $5 tables and overpriced drinks on the strip (although yes you technically get free drink when you are gambling).

We stayed at The Golden Nugget on Fremont Street. I'd definitely recommend it. The Four Queens over the road has $1 tables. You can sit there playing blackjack for 4 hours and you're never going to be any more than $30 up or down. Meanwhile your bevvy is basically comped. I kept waking up at 2am with the time difference, wandering over to the casino and getting rubbered.

Mandalay Bay is excellent is you don't care about being at one end of the strip but since you're on a stag do it might be better to either be further up or even just get one near Fremont since it's cheaper and a good night out.

Helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon or if not wanting to spend as much hiring a decent car between a few of you and driving there is a decent day trip. If you're not too hungover try out the rides on the top of the Stratosphere for something to do during the day too. There's also clubs for during the day or on some days DJs at the beaches or pools of some of the hotels if you want to continue drinking through the day without gambling at the same time.

The old strip or Fremont street is so much better for a stagger than the "sanatized" new strip, this man kens the score

If I was on a stag I'd be heading for Fremont for at least one night of it, great entertainment and dirt cheap for booze and gambling.

There are some decent things to do like quad biking in the desert, loads of golfing and even skiing/boarding at Mount Charleston depending on the time of year (about an hour out of vegas)

The Mob museum is meant to be brilliant and cheap too, I have missed it both times I have been there though.

Apart from that sit at the pools and enjoy the views if the sun is out ;-)

The Mob Museum was OK, wouldnt go out of my way to visit it - the highlight being the actual wall from the St Valentines Day massacre. Bought some Popcorn flavoured Taffy from a shop just down the road from it which wasnt a good idea, nasty nasty stuff.

  • 3 weeks later...

Went for my honeymoon in May, stayed at NY NY.  Great hotel, cheap ish rooms (with a jacuzzi), good restaurants, great pool and pool bar, 2 $5 blackjack tables where I hoovered up plenty of free bevvy and only 10 mins walk down to the middle of the strip. We done the helicopter tour to the Canyon, pricey at around $700 but it was worth it.  I can't speak highly enough of Vegas, been twice and had an amazing time on both occasions, definitely my favourite place.

was there last week for a few days

the main strip is one of the most overrated places in the world. as said try the older areas, you wont get fleeced for booze etc. 9 bucks for a coors light or a bud most places and with the shoddy exchange rate and that tipping service bollocks it makes for a lot of expense.

Difficult to answer I know. But how much spending money do you reckon I would need for two weeks. We'd be drinking and gambling a fair bit I'd imagine. Few shows too.
Ooft thats a toughie as has been mentioned you can quite easily blow a few grand in minutes or you can survive quite cheaply depending on your choice of hotel etc.I always budget for around £100 a day when on holiday but if you go mental at the tables etc thats gone in seconds. For show tickets theres a cheap "last minute"type of booth up by the fashion mall on the new strip across from the Wynn hotel. If you have been to New York its the same idea as the one underneath the red steps on Broadway
Other than that i always suggest around fremont street in the old original part of Vegas but if you have never been then you must do the Strip, Ceasers/fountains at the Bellagio etc

Two weeks is a hell of a long time to spend in Vegas.

I'm going in August for five nights, planning on taking about a grand each as would quite like to take in a show and have heard you are looking at about $10 a beer on the strip.  Quite like the look of the zip line and would love to do the helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon.
