And by that....if he hadn't eaten a pie he would have also in breach....

Exactly, he was put in a position by Sun Bets keep his mouth shut or bite the bullet pie.

Sun Bets in a win win situation and the keeper in a lose lose.

Firstly, a player gambling on any football matches or markets is not allowed by the authorities, even ones involving a game you aren't playing in. So this 'he wasn't affecting the game, is a moot point.

Secondly, people calling Sunbets stupid are completely missing what has gone on here. They will not care whatsoever about losing a sum running in to the low thousands on this, it's a high profile game live on BBC, it's worthwhile marketing for them. I would imagine they'd have approached Wayne Shaw about this, and even if they didn't they certainly won't be moaning about the payout.

Thirdly, f**k the fat c**t and f**k The Sun.

Thank you.

He didn't place a bet on said market.

Still a moot point, footballers are not allowed to influence or engage in the betting industry surrounding football, so him not affecting the game, while obviously stopping it being as relevant as match fixing, is not a sound defence for him.

If he hadn't eaten the pie he would still have affected the outcome of the bets. He was put into a no win situation. He was thoroughly stitched up by the bookmaker.

He has been stitched up, but there's a difference between doing something proactively (in this case, eating a pie as a result of the bet being advertised) and not doing something.  If he had ignored the Sun wheeze, no one could have accused him of being involved.  In normal circumstances, guys on the bench don't eat pies; he would just have been doing what he normally does by sitting on the bench and getting behind his team.

I assume Sutton have one or two injured goalkeepers?

They have a higher budget than any League 1 or 2 team in Scotland. Absolutely no reason to have a goalkeeper of that age/size so close to actually playing.

How? Footballers are aware there'll be a market for them to score first in a game, is any player who scores first in any game also influencing the betting industry?

A footballer cannot directly control whether or not he scores first though.

He can control whether or not he tucks into a pie/pasty while on the bench.

Can't remember which programme it was on, maybe one of the Jimmy Hill retrospectives, but they showed old footage of a couple of top division managers being interviewed during a game back in the 70's or 80's. It didn't expand on it but it was maybe a trial that never took off at that stage.

I wonder if this is a thing imported from North American sports. It tends to happen more regularly there, although admittedly that's in everyday games rather than a comparative showpiece like this one.

It's a harsh punishment. The man's just lost his job for a silly decision likely made in the heat of the moment. Read somewhere that he's involved with the club more than just sub goalie - does a bit of coaching and club maintenance. A high price to pay for a stupid joke. I'd be happier to see the Sun charged.

Heat of the moment? I doubt a boy was on the bench next to him flicking through his phone asking if he felt like making a few quid.
