First bunch of FFA Cup First Round ties last night and a few goals scored.

Blacktown City 6 Sydney United 2 (aet), Sydney were leading 2-0 then it was 2-2 after 90 mins. Blacktown's 3rd goal was a long range shot from midway though their own half with Sydney goalie caught too far out.

FNQ Heat 0 Edgeworth Eagles 3

Shamrock Rovers Darwin 0 Brisbane Strikers 6. Tier 2 NT standard is nowhere near Tier 2. The Rovers did arrive at the ground in a stretch limo as one of their players works for the limo company.

Hume City 1 Marconi Stallions 1 (aet). 4-2 on penalties. This was the live TV game and 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Goals here but not sure if this link will work outside Australia. http://www.foxsports.com.au/football/ffa-cup/live-ffa-cup-2016-round-of-32-matchday-one/news-story/0753846d16bd0bcd9c63d76d8a679666

These games do seem to come very early into pre-season for the A League clubs, whilst the State clubs are in the middle of theirs. Suppose it does create some shock results though.

There's no ideal time to play them. If you leave it until the A League starts then the State clubs are disadvantaged because their season finished ages ago.

Plus prior to this season only 1 A-League side had list to a lower league side. Adelaide City beat WSW 1-0 in 2014. Just over 2 months later WSW won the Asian Champions League.

It's just a shame that NPL teams are so small that a A-league two isn't viable as a relegation from the A-league would give the league something else to look forward to (well only if your a Central Coast fan)

The former NSL teams like South Melbourne, Marconi, Sydney United, Adelaide City, Melbourne Knights, Wollongong Wolves aren't small, give them a big enough platform and they'll get the decent crowds again.   Maybe the NSL needs to reform, a bit like the NASL in the USA, get a Canberra team in at that level, a Geelong team, try Gold Coast and FNQ again, and you'd have a decent starting point at eventually bringing in some form or prom/rel.

I think the main thing that would hamper a NASL type national NPL is the cost of travel in Aus. Interstate travel is extortionate and some clubs would probably run at a loss if they had to travel every second week.

Anyway I'm looking forward to the coming season and got my Glory membership in the mail last week

I can't see the FFA introducing promotion/relegation through a feeder league or even the winner of the NPL national finals series in the short to medium term. What is more likely to happen is expansion of the league by introducing new clubs. It seems to have worked with WSW and Melbourne City but was a disaster with Gold Coast United and NQ Fury. Why they've never brought in a club from Wollongong has always surprised me. Canberra hardly ever drew big crowds in the old NSL days so it might be a risk setting up a club there. There would also be some reluctance to promote an existing club side from any of the state NPL competitions as a lot of clubs still have their ethnic "wogball" ties. Adelaide City were Adelaide Juventus and despite enforced name change in old NSL days the crowd still chanted Juve Juve and this hasn't changed. The other Adelaide former NSL team, West Adelaide is Greek as are South Melbourne and Heidelberg United. Sydney United and Melbourne Knights were Sydney Croatia and Melbourne Croatia. An A B League would be fantastic but as mentioned travel is a major problem and too a degree the lack of suitable grounds and large population centres outside capital cities.

I don't see the issue with ethnic clubs, these exist all over the world, clubs with ties to other nations eg. Chivas in the USA and dare I say it Celtic.

They've been pretty much abandoned in the drive for franchise football which is a shame as they have a lot to offer the game, and if it wasn't for their foresight, national league football might never have happened. A South Melbourne v Melbourne Victory game would probably be a better derby than the one involving City.

Promotion/Relegation isn't an easy issue as you say, but I think more can be done to provide a strong second tier platform to allow the "tradtional" clubs plus new starts a place to grow, although probably another couple of expansion clubs to bring the A League upto a more workable 12 is required first.

Expanding the a league is probably a better way to go, but probably add established NPL ex nsl clubs,

l don't think WA could sustain a second club, Stirling Lions or Bayswater would be our top two NPL teams, both who attract decent NPL crowds but nothing special. Even Glory are struggling to get memberships to the level they were at in the NSL days.

So maybe Wollongong is a good shout, but I'm stumped for a second team
