The James Glen Memorial Trophy (Kilbirnie tournament)

It's our annual pilgrimage to Valefield Park this weekend for The James Glen Memorial Trophy pre-season tournament at Kilbirnie.

It's a particularly interesting one this year, with Shildon AFC coming up from County Durham as the champions of the Northern League (9th tier of the English pyramid), and they are Rutherglen Glencairn's opponents in the 2nd game on Saturday. Shildon have played three pre-season games so far, scoring twenty goals and conceding only one, so it'll be interesting to compare how our level compares to that level of English non-league football.

The opening game on Saturday sees hosts Kilbirnie Ladeside playing Wishaw Juniors at 1pm, with Glens v Shildon at 3pm. It's the usual format with the two losing teams playing at 1pm on Sunday and the final at 3pm on Sunday.

Glencairn are the current holders, having won it on a penalty shoot-out in the final last season v Kilbirnie. Bizarrely, all four matches ended in a scoring draw last year, all four games being decided on penalties. Hopefully this year's tournament is just as competitive.

Looking forward to this, hope it's a dry weekend, Shildon look a great set up, I'm tipping them to play Ladeside in the final.

Oh yeah?  Well I'm  goin for a Wishy / Glens final!

Good wee tourney always good to get off to a winning start Meechan ,Brennan(penalty)& McElroy on his debut scoring a well taken goal after beating a couple of Wishaw players. Then on next a hard fought game Rutherglen V Shildon settled by penalty's with Shildon coming out on top. Should be a few neutrals turn up tomorrow 2 games for price of one & the world famous Wishaw Ultras

The league Shildon play in is on a par with West Super League Premier IMO. I was told from the Shildon Assistant Manager they were missing six regulars who are still on holiday but it was still a strong starting line up according to some of their fans. Game could have gone either way very little between the two teams.
Final should be a belter.

Yes, it was an interesting comparison. Glencairn were also missing Fraser Team and Ryan Bennett.

Wishaw Juniors 2 Rutherglen Glencairn 3.

Grant (penalty) and Collinder had Wishaw 2-0 up by the mid point of the first half, despite Glencairn having dominated up to that point. Wishaw missed a real sitter to make it 3-0 before Glens came storming back with two Paddy Cullen goals just before half time. Cullen completed his hat trick in the second half for a deserved winner as Glencairn almost completely controlled the second 45 minutes.

Pictures and full match report to follow.
