Development League 16/17

Recommended Posts

MArk Wotte in "congratulating " Ross County on winning the league says that it is much easier to produce a player for County than for Celtic. In a sentence he portrays the mentality that holds back any nurturing or national approach to developing a depth of opportunity for young talent in Scotland. To my shame I have only seen the County, Hibs and Hamilton youngsters this year and no doubt there are many more equally enthusiastic and dynamic teams at this level. Wotte's remark is wrong on so many levels it is hard to know where to start but where people are afforded (Previously in his case) a significant status in our game it must be understood that it is not where you start it is where your potential can take you.

What did Wotte say?

Regardless of future changes, one of Mackay's predecessors, Mark Wotte, stresses the primary aim of the Development League is not "winning it but to prepare 16-21-year-old players for their first team debut".

Former performance director Wotte insists the Development League is all about preparing players to step up

"It's great for Ross County but all that matters is how many of their players will progress to the first team and maybe further up the ladder," Wotte told BBC Scotland.

"Winning the league is a 'nice to have' not a 'must have'. Academy graduates playing first team is a 'must have' like (Kieran) Tierney, (Liam) Henderson, (Callum) McGregor and (James) Forrest at Celtic.

"Also it is easier to produce players for the level of Ross County than for Celtic without disrespecting the level of Ross County.

"In fairness, Celtic have much more money for recruitment and their academy than Ross County so it is still an amazing achievement, but you have to put it in perspective with what kind of age-group players they participated throughout the season."

Tries and fails with each sentence to sweeten his sour grapes.

I don't really have a problem with what he says, apart from ignoring the fact that Morrison has been in and around the squad quite a lot, and Tumilty and Dykes have started pushing for places.

And, of course, the team was just awful last season.

Motte's view seems to miss the bigger picture. But he's not wrong in what he says.

Dunfermline won't be fielding a development team next year in preparation for a return to the reserve league in the season 18/19. its been good to get our young players exposed to the very best quality youth players in the country resulting in players like PJ Crossan making a move to Celtic, was surprised we were allowed to keep up development  league status while pissing around in league one and it's a shame to miss a season of development for our small band of young players but hopefully they can make their case to be included in the first team squad. Kelty Hearts have been brilliant with the club and hopefully, we can keep our partnership going with them. See you all in a seasons time when we are playing our reserve teams rather than U20's and congratulations to Ross County for winning this year's league! :thumsup2

Rangers have withdrawn from the development league next season and will instead be playing regular friendlies against academy sides in Europe.

Really?  So they are going to cut back on youth development?  One of the ways to improve without transfer fees is to develop from within and they are bailing on that.  At this rate they won't need to worry about Celtic winning 10 in a row, it could be 15 or 20 in a row.

would imagine it's for similar reasons for us not taking part next year, to save costs before changing to a reserve league next year.

Why can't they change to a reserve league for next season? There are surely no contractual obligations in place for the Development League, so if the plan is to go back to reserves, just get it done, surely?

Is it not largely a superficial change anyway?

Replacing U20s Development League (U20s + maximum no. of over-age players) with an "SPFL Trophy" aka Reserve League (no age restriction + minimum no. of U20 players).

That was what I thought. It really just seems to be semantics except people get to call it a reserve league and feel all warm an fuzzy with nostalgia.

Agreed, 5 over age players can play in these games. Change for changes sake this one I'm afraid
