Martin and Hanley

Inspired by that bomb scare formation post in the Gauld thread. Should we rule out a back 3 plus wing backs? I always thought its a bit bonkers to play a formation which defenders don't use at their clubs but Wales have used it successfully. Maybe it could make up for our lack of quality at CB?

doubt 3 at the back would work, you either need 3 good centre halves (we dont have) or 2 half decent centre halves and a good sweeper to organise them (which we dont have)

i would however love a 3 at the back as we have a few decent potential wingbacks, and it would take away this whole 1 up front shite we have witnessed for years

Wales have good centre halves though. Ashley Williams is probably the best British centre half going.

They have one good centre half. Williams is partnered by a left back and another centre half as equally as shite as one of ours.

Think you're pushing it there. James Collins, who is a regular at centre half for West Ham who finished 7th in the EPL last season can't get a start for Wales.

If he was Scottish, he would be right in the starting line up. We don't have a single player who plays regularly for a top half EPL team. Wales have some who can't get in the team.

Collins only started 16 games for West Ham. He's not much more than a back up and is someone they should be looking to upgrade upon. Besides, it's James Chester who's been playing instead recently and he struggles to force himself into the West Brom team.

Charlie Adam plays more regularly for Stoke than Collins does for West Ham and he can't get in our team. Who are these Wales players you speak of?

Collins played for West Ham for a total of 1,973 minutes last season, compared to Adams 1,275. While Chester was an absolute standout in the Championship and ended up moving for £10m. They both shite on the likes of Hanley and Martin.

I don't think Chester is a great deal better than Martin/Hanley but the difference is Wales look like a defensive unit whereas our back line is a shambles as a unit.

Yeah you've got to think there is a failing to organise the defence. Basic things like Martin wandering like a tit for Poland's opener back in October. Naismith being left to mark 6ft 3in Murphy on the near post flick on for Ireland's goal. It should be Strachan's priority to get them organised.

strachan can only do so much, you need a leader at the back to say who goes where and marks what player, we havent had a defensive leader for a long time, davie weir probably

we're miles ahead of northern Ireland, they'd kill for some of the players who can't even get in our squad, we could put out 3 squads better than Iceland too and are better than Albania. One tournament doesn't mean they have better players, the northern Ireland keeper just got released by Hamiltonf ffs, we have 3 outstanding keepers they don't have any. Only Evans and Davis would get in our squad.

You sir  need to see a specialist,   all that incoherent babbling your doing.  Norn Ireland would hammer us in a competitive match...because theyou are better than us

Kyle Lafferty wouldn't get in a Scotland squad, never mind a game. Everyone hounds Strachan for calling up Chris Martin but he's a considerably superior player. Northern Ireland have comfortably better centre backs than us, but looking at every other area of the park Davis is the only player who'd get in a Scotland squad. He'd be a guaranteed starter obviously, but no one else there would get a look-in even as a fringe player.

Anyway, as for Scottish options, Danny Wilson is an ordinary Championship centre back who wouldn't get a game for Falkirk and will be found out horribly this season. He'll never play for Scotland again and rightly so. Cooper will hopefully get a cap in a friendly at some point and do well as we really can't be resorting to a player as poor as Berra every time Martin or Hanley are unavailable. It'd be nice if Kingsley could move to centre back at club level and continue his progress there since we have an abundance of left backs already.

We're really just hoping for a player to emerge from nowhere like Robertson did, as there's no obvious young centre back you look at and think they're clearly on their way to being good enough. Looking at the under-21s, John Souttar hasn't matched the hype so far, Jordan McGhee doesn't look like he'll be anything more than a decent top flight player and Stuart Findlay clearly isn't going to be good enough for Scotland. Stephen Hendrie's going on loan to Blackburn for this season so it'll be interesting to see how he does in the Championship: it'd be good if he partners Hanley at centre back but he'll probably play left-back meaning he's just our 8th choice there if he does well.

He's been mince for Scotland but yes, Chris Martin is easily better than Kyle Lafferty.

Kyle Lafferty was punted from an English Championship club to a relegation battling Turkish side because he wasn't anywhere near good enough for the division, having scored once in 20 appearances. Chris Martin has been the top scorer for his English Championship club three years running.

It's a similar situation to Healy for Northern ireland, top scorer for them but never held down a regular place in a club team.

Mcfadden was our talisman 15 goals in 40 odd appearances for Scotland but rarely got 4/5 goals a season for Everton or Birmingham.

Interesting move........See another Strachan Fave in Greer will be going to Bolton, surely this must mean the end of his Scotland Career now as there is no way we should be calling him up whilst playing for a struggling Bolton, assuming he goes there and even plays.
