It wasn't a poor penalty in the slightest. He's tricked the keeper and managed to get the weight of the ball just right. It was incredibly unlucky.

He got it off target. It was an absolutely shite penalty.

Slightly surprised Austria looked so happy to settle for a draw really.

This is an example of how the expanded tournament, and 3 teams possibly qualifying from the groups, has been bad for the tournament. Drawing, and even losing by a narrow margin against a big side, can be a positive result for teams. In the old format Austria would have had to come out in the last 20 minutes and make a game of it.

I didn't say it was a great penalty. It was a decent penalty that was unluckily missed by an inch or two.

You said he got the weight 'just right'. Which is quite clearly nonsense.

It was a dreadful penalty. Failing to hit the target from a penalty is an absolute fail. Horrendous effort.

See the Czech penalty the other day for an actually good penalty.

Shearer claiming he's missed five of his last 6. If Portugal's manager had a pair he'd have told him he was off the pens.

Just not the direction, which from 12 yards out, from a dead ball, with no-one but the keeper ahead of him, is a little bit shite.

Thought Austria could have been a bit more courageous on the break towards the end. A lot of work to do in the final game.

He did get the weight just right. Unfortunately for him the direction was ever so slightly off. Not a great shot by any means but not a bad effort either.

no sure I get why your going on about the weight, he's not going to hit it too soft? Last penalty he took, he scored in the cl final so he must have missed 5 in a row before that, can't see it

Surely with a -2 goal difference and 1 point Austria will have to run up a cricket score against Iceland? That or rely on Hungary to beat Portugal.

4 points should be enough. It's unlikely 6 other teams would end up on four points. Also Hungary may yet beat Portugal.

In the 1994 World Cup one of the groups ended with every team on 4 points. They all had the same goal difference as well. Norway had scored only one goal though and hence finished bottom and went out. The other three went through.

I like the new format. It means going into the last group games 20 out of 24 teams still have something to play for. Only Spain, France and Italy have qualified for the next round and only Ukraine have been knocked out.

I don't think so, but can be proven wrong.  Ukraine can still overtake TFS on goal difference, no?
