EOS Qualifying League 2016-17

Recommended Posts

Format announced on EOS League social media. Expanded from 4 sections of 4 clubs, to 2 sections of 6 clubs... no doubt to compensate for the reduction in EOSL games. EOSQL normally opens the season, although in 2013-14 it ran throughout the season.

Clubs to be seeded into 3 pots:

Pot 1 - Leith Athletic, Lothian Thistle HV, Tynecastle, Peebles Rovers

Pot 2 - Ormiston, Stirling University, Heriot Watt University, Coldstream

Pot 3 - Burntisland Shipyard, Duns, Eyemouth United, Tweedmouth Rangers

Says winners of each section qualify to League Cup Semi-Finals. Runners-up and third-place in each section qualify to League Cup First Round:

East of Scotland League Cup, First Round

(I) - Runner-up, Section A v Third Place, Section B

(II) - Runner-up, Section B v Third Place, Section A

East of Scotland League Cup, Semi-Finals

Winner, Section A v (II)

Winner, Section B v (I)

Good prospect of several Berwick/Berwickshire derbies in one of the sections. Says the draw is tomorrow.

Congratulations to LTHV who by my reckoning have qualified from their section with 2 games to spare... Even if not mathematically sure on points their impressive GD of +19 (19 For & 0 Against) would see them prevail in any tie. No reason to let-up intensity, however, as winning the section avoids a League Cup R1 tie and gives home advantage in SFs.

Top three in each section. Winners go through to League Cup SFs (home tie)... runners-up are home to third-place from the opposite section in League Cup R1. So plenty to play for.

Thanks, hadn't realised it was on page 1 aswell [emoji85]

Quite a strange format but like you say keeps it more interesting.

Duns folding has left it a bit lop-sided as 3 from 5 will progress in Section B. While it was 2 sections of 6 then it was probably not unreasonable for half the teams to progress, making:

1 - League Cup SFs
----------------------------
2 - League Cup R1
3 - League Cup R1
================
4
5
6

Competition concluded today although 2 games are still outstanding. According to EOS website the Ormiston v Burntisland game is in a fortnight but it is a dead-rubber. Tweedmouth v Leith is very much alive however... Tweedmouth need 1pt to pip Heriot-Watt; but if they were to win by 3 goals then Leith would drop below Heriot-Watt and fail to reach the League Cup, and any win would see Tweedmouth top the section; Leith meanwhile know they only need to avoid defeat and they will top the section. Tynecastle, although top now, will finish 2nd/3rd.

Section A
1 - Lothian Thistle HV (15pts, +25)
------------------------------------------------
2 - Coldstream (9pts, +4)
3 - Eyemouth United (9pts, -4)

============================
4 - Peebles Rovers (6pts, -3)
5 - Burntisland Shipyard (3pts, -11)
6 - Ormiston (0pts, -11)

Section B
1 - Tynecastle (6pts, +2)
------------------------------------------------
2 - Leith Athletic (6pts, +2)
3 - Heriot-Watt University (6pts, 0)
============================
4 - Tweedmouth Rangers (6pts, -1)
5 - Stirling University EOS (3pts, -3)

Ormiston beat Burntisland 7-3 on Saturday in the outstanding game in Section A. This counted for nothing in terms of reaching the League Cup, but lifted Ormiston to 5th.

According to the September to March fixture list on the EOSL website, the outstanding - and vital - Tweedmouth v Leith game in Section B will be played on November 19th.

Bump. This concludes tomorrow:

* Tweedmouth must at least draw to qualify as runners-up, with corresponding home tie in League Cup R1... a win would see them top the section, with corresponding LC R1 bye... Tweedmouth cannot finish third

* Leith must avoid defeat by 3+ goals to qualify in third.. a draw or win would see them top the section... Leith cannot finish runners-up

* Tynecastle have qualified - if it's a draw they finish third... if either wins they finish runners-up... Tynecastle cannot top the section

* Heriot-Watt University will only qualify, in third, if Leith win... or if Tweedmouth win by 3+ goals

Bump again...

Five months on and another attempt to complete this game and with it the EOS Qualifying League competition falls tomorrow. Permutations of course remain as above.
